Mock if old;

Search only had the 1 thread on SOPA changing name to Cispa;

Facebook is on board.

CISPA would allow companies and the government to bypass privacy protections and share all sorts of information about what Americans do online. The legislation makes it far easier for authorities and private companies to spy on your email traffic, comb through your mobile texts, filter your online content and even block access to popular websites.

If this bill passes, authorities won’t have to worry about pesky privacy laws getting in the way the next time they want to grab your Facebook history or search through your email. All they’ll need is the vague sense that the information relates to a “cyber threat” -- a poorly defined concept in the bill. And you’ll never know they shared that information.

But the bill’s supporters have used social media to hit back, too. The House Intelligence Committee, which originally debated the bill in a markup hearing in December 2011, and which is run by the bill’s primary sponsor Rep. Rogers (Chairman of the committee) and Rep. Ruppersberger (Ranking member), launched a Twitter account on Wednesday which it has been using to attempt to counter the comparisons between CISPA and SOPA.

“It is disappointing that some are using new media to spread misinformation about our cyber bill,” said Susan Phalen, a spokesperson for the House Intelligence Committee, in an email to TPM. “We are working diligently to inform the public about what the Rogers-Ruppersberger bill actually does, which is to give the government authority to provide classified cyber threat information to private sector companies and clear the legal barriers that currently inhibit cyber threat information sharing between private sector entities, and between private sector entities and the government — all while providing strong protections for privacy and civil liberties.”

Further, Phalen told TPM that the bills sponsors had reached out to critics directly, holding “over 100 meetings with cyber industry groups and businesses, and privacy advocates and civil liberties groups, including the CDT, ACLU, EFF, CATO, The Heritage Foundation, the Constitution Project, etc.”

And yet, will the bill scheduled to hit the full House floor the week of April 23 for further debate, the battle over CIPSA appears to be just getting started in earnest.

Letters of support for bill;

I doubt there will be a significant # of people that quit FB and go to things like Google+, but it could be the thing that G+ needs.. unless they as well are a supporter. Looks like they aren't... sweet. This will be a divisive issue for hipsters indeed.

someone needs to shop Zuck's face onto that backwards GIF where they're shoving the unconscious guy under the burning car.

That pretty much sums my feelings up for the guy lately.

I really want to see what FB members are going to do about this one. I mean, the bill is more than likely going to pass. One way or another name change, its what the govt wants. This is definitely one of those clear cut issues of the reins getting tighter and tighter, but you don't do anything since its not as tight as it could be.

Let's be honest. The only reason the big companies dropped support for SOPA/PIPA was because they were getting bad PR. Ignore their PR speak, look at their actions instead. Not surprisingly, BSA, Chamber of Commerce, and Microsoft is on the list of CISPA supporters as well. Make a big enough PR stink about CISPA and these companies will once again claim they will drop support, until the next bill comes out.

It's hilarious that the people have to protest to the big guys representing them to maintain their freedom and liberty. And by hilarious I mean depressing and horrible.

Hell yea FB is on board, Zuck was all about sharing private information of people back in school, its in him, nothing has changed.

Sticking text on photos like this is the new form of political cartoons, minus the humour and creativity.

This is why 99% of my info on the internet is fake. This is an inevitability, fight it all u want, it will happen eventually.

This.

I deleted my old real Facebook(back when it was The Facebook) account ages ago. Now I've got a fauxbook setup just for keeping in touch with old friends from HS.

The fact that they are open to letting businesses have access to your "personal" info is just lol worthy, but then again, most youngsters today are WAAAAAAAAY too open with their deets online.

I know too little about this bill and how law works to judge: does this affect anyone outside of the US? Or is simply the fact that Facebook complies enough? (I assume mail won't affect non-US citizens)

I know it's not right, but I feel like these people will get their way eventually. We're just delaying the inevitable. I'll certainly complain to my Congressmen, but I feel like it's futile in the long run.

These fuckers did their homework after SOPA. They clearly don't give a damn about the Internet, privacy, and civil liberties as a whole. Being able to outright access anyone's Facebook, e-mail, search history, etc. just because is the end of a free society. We're fucked. The fact that this kind of stuff keeps coming up for debate is troublesome enough; odds suggest that eventually something will get through.

Zuck is the worst thing that ever happened to the Internet, by the way.

that is one of the worst memes ever created.

also, I find it funny that people will complain about this, but probably won't leave Facebook, yet they were fine leaving GoDaddy.

also why does this matter, Facebook has been giving away your information since it got popular

Unless I'm mistaken, have they ever searched through your emails?

Trading our info for their service is one thing. Searching your emails/history/whatever whenever they want, is something completely different.
