Famitsu next gen survey

I wouldn't base anything on the readers' response as they are not representing Japan gamers at all. Wasn't it a poll in late autumn that showed that more people were interesting in buying PSP than DS in the remainder of the year?

What has Sakaguchi done to deserve any attention? None of his games are even close to being out yet. Are any Mistwalker games actually going to be out in 2006?

Although looking back on sales will be interesting at the end of 2006. Methinks too many people are underestimating the PS3. Should never underestimate the console leader.

DS will probably be the best selling platform in Japan this year, so the poll doesn't seem that accurate to me.

I wonder if PS2 can sell 1.5 Million this year. It probably could, but it looks like it's finally on its way to sub-20,000 levels every week. I wonder where it's at this week.

I think like the Japanese!

I just remembered that one of the previous polls had the Revolution at 8% in terms of interest by the people. Glad to see it moved on up quite a bit. :D

1. PS3 - 53.7% of the developers, 56.9% of the retailers, and 46.3% of the gamers
2. Revolution - 41.4% of the developers, 43.9% of retailers, 45.8% of the gamers
3.Xbox360 - 2.4% of the developers, 1.7% of the retailers, 7.9% of the gamers
360... OUCH!

Disappointing to see such little interest in PSP now. It's true that the JP library was pretty bad up until the end of last year, but there is so much potential there. It's a great little device.

I still don't understand the DS craze, but it is pretty obvious that it appeals to a different crowd.

I think the PSP was about 3 years too early. We're entering an era where you download stuff onto your handheld devices instead of buying extra things to put into them (movies, TV shows). While it's been successful, I do think there is the danger of another neat gadget replacing it sometime in the future.

However, I don't think Sony should or will give up on handheld gaming.

No, because a representative poll is a poll with more than 1000 people in it.
That obviously depends on how many people you're supposed to represent.

According to the National Council on Public Polls, "1,000 adults can accurately reflect the opinions of nearly 210 million American adults". So 530 should be plenty for representing 40 (?) million Japanese gamers.

Yeah, the Gaming crowd.
Don't really agree with that, honestly. The best GAMES on the machine were not really successful (especially in Japan). Dracula, Sonic Rush, and a number of other great GAMES failed while those titles often labeled as "non-games" sold like crazy. The success comes from "non-games".

I believe the success of the DS comes from those who are NOT hardcore gamers. Nintendo successfully reached out to a different audience. I didn't expect such success, actually, but you've got to hand it to them.

I'm happy with the games the DS has offered, to be honest. Still hate the actual hardware, but there is some really fun software out there. Everything I've really loved, though, has flopped at retail while I detest everything that has done well. That's bad for me as other developers would likely rather emulate the path of success than failure and we'll end up with more titles that I don't want.

Ah well, what can you do?

Way to go Sakaguchi!

dark10x, I think there is potential for good 'game' sales as slimeMoriMori has proven. Its just that you have to give the userbase what it wants and combine that with a decent marketing push. USA saved castlevania and sonic though, both>100,000.

Why?
One moment i think the Japanese are waking up from a 10yr slumber, and yet they still have the capability to do this.
Okay there are the few XBox360 games, but in the same time frame as these we are more than likely going to get Zelda TP, Mario 128, Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong Rev +many more.
How they they say Sakaguchi deserves more attention when we have someone who is a gaming god, and who has created characters (Pikmin still untested i know) that have lasted many years and many more to come.

The 360 is doomed in Japan. Completely hosed.

The beautiful thing about this statement is that it totally doesn't matter. M$ hardly got any consumer support from Japan on the X90 so the X360 will do fine with minimal Japanese consumer support this go round. The truly funny part is that since X360 will do quite well in western markets so Japanese developers, the thing that really matters, can't afford to totally ignore the X360 even if the Japanese gamers do ignore it. In the end if M$ releases their internally funded RPGs over here I'll be happy to check them out, if I miss out on a few horse racing simulators and/or tentacle porn I think I'll be just fine... ok ok ok I'll miss the tentacle porn, but that's when the PS3 comes in!

Both are weak sales considering the quality of these games (even though I cant stand the Dual-screen with Sonic Rush).

Those games did as expected, they were never successful franchise in Japan.

Oh. My. God.

It really is a nonsense to make claims that Nintendogs, Brain Training etc are "non-games". They aren't traditional games, but they are clearly games
