Farewell 360 :(

StoOgE

First tragedy, then farce.
My lovely 360 had redied and wont turn back on anymore. I got the box from Microsoft Friday or Sat (cant remember).. just packed it up. At least I got a solid weekend out of it before it died.

They better not have lied about that '1 week' for the whole process bit. Im also guessing this means Im getting someone elses refurbed 360, because there is no way they are fixing mine in that time period.

Keep my jetpack warm guys :(

I also gave my little coustin my original Xbox. So, um yeah.

Love how you can detach the HDD on the 360.

Original Xbox = goodbye Team Ninja saved games.

nope, I got the blinking red light of death. Im sending them the console, hard-drive and power supply...

and yeah, it looks like Fight Night killed it. Got a weekend of Final Fantasy XI demo and some Gauntlet last night with some Gaffers.

the way hardware manufacturers have been acting recently, one weekend of solid gameplay for ~$700 (or whatever 360's are costing now-a-days) sounds pretty reasonable.

I put my 360 in a DHL box in my town and noticed that they dont pick up on Sat. And if you pull down on the handle you can pretty easily reach in for the packages.

So my system is sitting in the cold right now... :(

fuck you MS

Ive had it since launch. Everything was good then Wed. or Thurs. I downloaded the Fight Night demo. The "good weekend" in before it died was me refering to the weekend I got after the problem first popped up to when it died for good.

the problem is you might not know there is a problem until a more advanced game comes along and uses yet unused portions of your processor/gpu

had it happen to a gpu i bought a while back. thank god i discovered it within like 3 days of the purchase or i would have been sol :x

Brother had his xbox 360 red light flashing. So we called got a box in two days, recieved the xbox back within 4 probably less. It was damned fast. Good service.

A guy I work with has had the dreaded red circle of light.

I hope they sort you out quick.

Unrelenting support and rushing to the defense of a game console out of unfettered fanboyism is one thing, but I still can't even figure out if this post is even relevant. If I'm reading it right, it might even be jokingly sarcastic.

DopeyFish should start looking for proxies.

err...how exactly is he spinning or doing damage control? He's giving a possible explanation why some games may cause this in certain systms, saying it's not something exclusive to the 360 (me: and is a rare occurance anyway) and then gives an example of when something similar happened to him?

I really dont know. I keep hearing that Xbox issues are with 5% of the systems.. but I had to replace my original Xbox in January 2002, and then had to replace the drive in my second Xbox back in May... now my 360 is broken.

Either Im the unluckiest fucker in the world or MS's problems are more rampant than advertised.

Dont be scared to get a 360 though. MS's support is outstanding. They are being really cool about everything and fixing the problem. Its not like the early Ipods where you were essentially getting shafted by apple or the early PSX issues where I was told to put my system in a ziplock baggie and stick it in a freezer by Sony.

Plus, its not like people are going to get on a message board and post how awesome there 360 is for not breaking. Those of us with issues are going to be far more vocal.

I got mine last week and it locked up after only about 30 seconds of gameplay. I can't get past 4 or so fights in DOA4 without it freezing. The box to send it in should arrive tomorrow.

I'm surprised at how many problems X360 has had, XBox1 didn't seem to have nearly as many at launch.

not at all true. The "dirty disc" error has been plauging the Xbox 1 since launch, its pretty widespread to. MS eventually got away from the cheapass Thompson drives and it ceased to be a problem. Also alot of the 360 "lockups" when pressing the dashboard button seams to be a software issues that is getting fixed (according to rumor).

Honestly, any launch hardware of any sort (DVD player, TV series, etc.) is going to be buggy as hell unless Nintendo makes it. I dont know what their magic is, but they have some sort of QC fairydust.

I still don't understand how a demo can kill a system. Did EA just do a totally horrible job putting the FN/Madden demos together (aside from the purty graphics, of course).

I'd be super pissed if I were MS.

There does seem to be an awful lot of problem reports. It's one reason I'm holding off on the system for awhile (the other is price). My friend has had his for a week and has had no problems. It's pretty sweet, but I can definitely wait.

I really wish more people understood this concept.

My 1st year Ps2 never broke.
Oh wait.. it did.

My Xbox didn't have those cd problems.
Oh wait... it did.

My gamecube.. Yeah, nothing happenened to that.

That's why people complain man, because there is reason there to do so.

Although Nintendo makes fantastically well-built products, I think the overuse problems come into play less.

Lower software sales + short, pick up and play games = Less drive overuse.

Combine that with a system that's such a well engineered little machine to begin with, and you have something that's gonna last.

I just bought one used, played it constantly all weekend (CoD2, RR6 and NBA2K6). Not a single issue whatsoever.

By power brick only gets warm, not hot like other people have suggested.

OMG, my copies of Smash Bros., Mario Kart and Tales of Symphonia all say "hi."

...to clarify, my friends and I have played some of my Cube games for HOURS on end, so I disagree with your "short pick-up games" argument.

Every console Nintendo has made AFTER the NES has been solid. NES had you blowing in the cartridges and swabbing the damn inside of the system to get a game to work. After that, all of my other Nintendo systems worked great to this day. I have a friend with a N64 that had half the shell broken and soda spilled in the damn thing and it still works. I will try and get a pic of it. Funny crap.

I've sent two defective 360s back to MS.

I bought the 360 at launch, and it died almost a week later (3 flashing red lights). The replacement was working perfectly, until a day or two later when it refused to read my CoD2 disc. So that got sent back too.

I have 5 friends who also bought 360s. Out of the 6 of us, three have had problems (including myself). Myself and one other had our 360 die within a week, and my third friend just had his die about a week or so ago (launch unit).

There was a poll for 360 owners at CAG the other week. They seem to have an almost 15% defective rate. Out of 195 people, 166 are working great, and 29 were defective. Of course, that's a very small sample, so who knows.

I'm not an MS basher, either. I love the design of the console and especially Live Arcade. I've played and finished a lot of the games: http://live.xbox.com/member/heavy liquid
It's just that these defective units have left me very disconcerted.

Why haven't the causes of these defects been isolated? Is it the HDD primarily? DVD-ROM drive? Heat issues?

I don't think I've ever heard of a disc drive failure (heavy liquid being the first... unless other games worked of course). The defects all seemed to be either heat related (vast majority) or HDD failure.

I would say mine is HDD related. The overheating issues seem to cause lockups when the guide button is pushed.

And Im not sure if EA actually did this or its just coincidence... but the last thing I did with my 360 before it 'died' was download and play the FN3 demo for about an hour. Turned the console off, went to bed and it didnt work the next morning.

It's happened to a number of people on the Xbox boards. Check out this thread: http://forums.xbox.com/943468/ShowPost.aspx

What happens is that you'll put in a game and an error message will appear saying "To play this disc, please insert it into an Xbox 360 console". The disc was flawless and played fine on my friends console. I'm not sure what causes it, but it's strange.

Granted it's good to send it back if there's even a hint of trouble, but did you try other games as well on your console? Not saying it wasn't, but if other games worked it doesn't necessarily have to be a dd failure.

I'm not sure what causes the problem, but I don't think it was the disc. It played all of my other games fine, except for Call of Duty 2 which wouldn't read at all and got that error message. I tried unplugging everything and restarting the 360 multiple times. The disc was perfect and without a scratch; it played fine two other 360s. I can only assume that it was the consoles fault. I didn't want to worry about buying a game in the future and having the error message pop up again or have the problem worsen. And like I said, other people seem to be having the same problem. There's a few threads about it at Xbox.com like this one: http://forums.xbox.com/1577795/ShowPost.aspx
