Farewell Nintendo Switch

We're saying goodbye to the Nintendo Switch. What game catalog did you have on the console, and what was your impression of its launch trailer and current thinking?

When I saw the console's trailer, I thought it was more of the same, and I wasn't excited and didn't care.

But after seeing that it was region-free and that its catalog was also varied and adult, I was hooked. And today I can say that it's the spiritual successor to the SNES and the equivalent of Nintendo's PS2.

I'm giving it a 9.5 rating just for the technical aspects, but it's undoubtedly one of Nintendo's best consoles.
It also served as a catharsis, as I came out of a dark period in my life shortly after the Nintendo Switch, so it was a coincidence, but from that generation onwards my life improved, and it has nothing to do with the device; it's just a coincidence that many things were positive.

Since I haven't had time, I still have Metroid and Detective Club games on my to-do list.

I'll be saying goodbye to the Nintendo Switch with Iwakura Aria, Patapon, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

I can't list all 130 games I own but yeah, fantastic console, fantastic concept they nailed at the second time (if we count the Wii U as a first attempt), my favourite console, Super Mario Odyssey best 3D Mario by far (followed by Galaxy 2 and SM64)

I'll have to let it marinate for a year or two more post the Switch 2 launch, but I feel like it'll definitely end up there with my favorite systems ever.

Fantastic concept/gimmick and amazing first party library.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership was my send off game. I'll play the Switch 2 version of everything new going forward.

I'm still playing the shit out of mine, and I'll likely just plop the games I'm playing into my Switch 2 and keep on trucking!

Pretty great system, although I used it almost exclusively for first party Nintendo titles after I got a Steam Deck.

Also in a way they're almost lucky that Wii U bombed so horribly. They were able to port over a bunch of kickass Wii U games that felt brand new since nobody played them before. Switch would've been nowhere near as good if it didn't have the Wii U library to feed off of.

I got a Switch mostly for Deadly Premonition 2, No More heroes and Metroid Dread, bleh, but I mostly own various retro collections and retro themed games. I actually don't own many first party titles for it. It pretty much fights with the GameCube for my least favorite Nintendo console at this point.

I got mine in 2019? I think I ended up using it about the same as my PS4 and much more than my PS5. I liked it. I almost never used it in handheld mode because I thought it was too big. My wife has a Switch Lite and I preferred that size. If I ever get a Switch 2, it will be a few years. I'm not too interested in it and I don't like Nintendo's behavior lately. I don't have to worry about "oh he's just going to buy one anyway" because I couldn't afford it even if I wanted it. I like when my hand is forced and I don't have the responsibility!

Nice sentiment if a little dramatic. My Switch 1 isn't going anywhere and I will probably keep playing games on it after I get Switch 2. It only has what, 15k games and not all of them command carrying a larger device with better specs.

Love the Switch, it might be my favorite Nintendo console of all time (which is saying a lot since it was able to dethrone the SNES). A huge reason it's able to win out overall is due to the re-release of so many great classics, as well as the systems being hackable to play entire libraries of retro games. Being able to play every SNES game, while portable, and with retro achievements, makes this system win out over the original by default.

Regardless of that, I have about 300 physical Switch games and almost 200 digital games purchased. It's the console that introduced me to Xenoblade Chronicles (I had never played the original until the DE released, I started with 2) and that's become one of my favorite series of all time. The system also has a lot of great evergreen games that I'm sure to be playing for years to come: Picross, Final Fantasy Theaterhythm, Dead Cells, Vampire Survivors, Balatro, and more.

This system was also a JRPG powerhouse. In addition to the above-mentioned Xenoblade Chronicles, we also got Unicorn Overlord, almost every Legend of Heroes game, tons of Atelier games (including Ryza, my personal favorite), SaGa (new entries as well as remasters and remakes), Octopath Traveler 1 and 2, Ys, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest...

Honestly, the Switch is probably my "deserted island" console.

For me the switch is my second favorite system of all time right behind the SNES. The system really reengaged my love for gaming and has also been an amazing bridge to share with my kids. The system has so many amazing first party games and also so many wacky third party titles that I love. Just picked up Bakeru, which is basically a spiritual successor to Mystical Ninja. I just love shit like that.

I feel I didn't play my Switch as much as I should, but I should credit it for my discovering the Legend of Heroes series and the Xenoblade Games thru it, they're some of my favorite jrpg series now.

I still have my switch and still have games to play and will still turn it on so no eulogy on my end

But switch lives on through switch 2

I came late to the party as I was just coming off several years of very minimal gaming - the resurgence led by Capcom's RE2 Remake and from enjoying that, began to cast my gaze upon old favorites, such as Nintendo, to see what they were up to since the last time I was paying the industry mind (which was Wii U). Deciding to purchase the Switch, I fell in love and my physical collection for the system ballooned quickly. Day 1 Switch 2, even though I don't have my eye on any launch software necessarily, I know it will come and don't want to deal with potential product shortfalls or rising prices in the future. My how things have changed, economically, over the last twenty years..!

It was great system with good amount of first party and JRPGs….this gen it became my main system instead of PS5.

It died the way it lived: being a better version of the wii u

I dont even mean that as a derogatory. It was just straight up what the wii u should have been

I moved the US at the end of 2015, and the Switch really gave me life there. I remember waiting on a chilly evening after work in a line at a big BestBuy in NYC to get one.

I played BotW, and was just in awe. After that I said, sure, I'll try the Splatoon 2 3-day tryout thingy, I hate the visual look of the game, but I didn't have anything else. I fell in love, and played like 5000+ hours of it. Me, who never played online and hated it.

Than Mario Odyssey, Labo, and so much more golden moments.

It is a great console. I'm hoping Switch 2 can rise to those levels and suppress them. MP4 release date.

Switch also had a lot of third part ports you wouldn't expect. Doom Eternal, for one. But also Earthfall, for some reason.

It was basically a better PS360 powerwise, and i wouldn't mind if it stayed onwards even with the impending release of Switch 2. Tons of indie titles can find a home on Switch. Just give it a good price reduction and it wouldn't be weird to see that happen.

Never cared about the system. It being portable is not a selling point to me, and when docked, it ran 100% of games worse than all other systems available. Even if you care about Zelda, the only way to play them is through emulation. So yea, the Switch ain't gonna be missed.

Great console for the first 3 years. Now it's underpowered and I rather emulate their games on PC than play it on the switch.

Wii U should have been different, but I'm not sure Switch was technically achievable 5 years prior.

For me, it's the GOAT. The new exclusives are incredible, and some of them are actually the best game in their respective series (Odyssey, Smash Ultimate, MK8 Deluxe). It has basically every console indie game. The back catalogue is incredible and it has first party controllers for consoles through N64 so you can experience very close to the originals without janky third party solutions. The amount of game collections is insane (Mega Man, Castlevania, FF, TMNT to name a few) and the ones that aren't part of the collection are also available on NSO or released standalone. You can play every mainline Final Fantasy game from 1 to 12, every mainline Resident Evil until RE2 remake, the entire Xenoblade franchise, all the Pikmin games, Bayonetta, etc.

You can play docked, but it's portable, it uses carts, you can expand storage with giant SD cards. It has decent online play (not the greatest, but finally). It comes in cheap small handheld and premium OLED models. Third party support for accessories was incredible as well, with a ton of cases, grips, controllers.

Unpopular opinion but Super Mario Odyssey was the best exclusive.

Agreed, and I'd even say the best Mario game ever made.

Relived my Wii experience:
Initially good, but after 4-5 first party games I was done. Collecting dust since 2019.

I wouldn't be so quick to say goodbye. The price tag on NS2 and the existing install base is going to make it difficult on Nintendo to convince their users to leave (especially those in the demo whose parents are buying their devices and games).
