Farewell Nintendo Switch

Switch 1 had some good games. Animal Crossing: New Horizons was a bit of a letdown for me, though. Went too hard into crafting for my liking and not hard enough into the "life sim" stuff like interactions with the NPCs and their simulated depth. Shoutout to Arms, which I still think deserves a sequel.

I don't own a massive amount of games for it. 32 games purchased (but 39 counting the collections).

Switch was an incredibly safe system in the end by Nintendo, so it will never be one of my favorites. That said, it had an amazing library and you can't ignore that.

Special shout out to Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and Astral Chain, since I think these two might get forgotten as we move to the Switch 2.

But the armchair analysts at Neogaf said it was destined to fail. Definitely a fluke that it's successful.

For me, it's the GOAT. The new exclusives are incredible, and some of them are actually the best game in their respective series (Odyssey, Smash Ultimate, MK8 Deluxe). It has basically every console indie game. The back catalogue is incredible and it has first party controllers for consoles through N64 so you can experience very close to the originals without janky third party solutions. The amount of game collections is insane (Mega Man, Castlevania, FF, TMNT to name a few) and the ones that aren't part of the collection are also available on NSO or released standalone. You can play every mainline Final Fantasy game from 1 to 12, every mainline Resident Evil until RE2 remake, the entire Xenoblade franchise, all the Pikmin games, Bayonetta, etc.

You can play docked, but it's portable, it uses carts, you can expand storage with giant SD cards. It has decent online play (not the greatest, but finally). It comes in cheap small handheld and premium OLED models. Third party support for accessories was incredible as well, with a ton of cases, grips, controllers.

Agreed, and I'd even say the best Mario game ever made.

It's not my GOAT, but it's a close second to the PS2. The reason why the PS2 is still my GOAT is because there's still lots of games that are exclusive to the system that hasn't come to other systems. I'm talking about first and third party games. Back in the PS2 Era, they had games specifically made in mind for the PS2 Hardware but that also has fantastic gameplay.

I'm fine with lot of Japanese Third Parties going fully multiplatform now but it was interesting to see how vast lot of the PS2 library was and how packed with classics each genre had. The exclusivity lot of games had with PS2 is what sealed it as my GOAT

Yes they are starting to remaster games that were stuck on PS1 and PS2 and release them on modern consoles and PC. But the issues I've been having with these remasters is where they go out of their way to censor certain stuff

So instead I just use a PS2 Emulator I got running on the Steamdeck to play PS2 games I wasn't able to play at the time. And man I am having fun and it's just been reminding me of why the PS2 is my GOAT

As for Switch, lot of the third party games that aren't JRPGs or any other type of Japanese games is usually a year late port that if they took the time runs great and looks great but if not ran and looked horribly

What I loved about my Switch though is the amount of Japanese Support it has especially in my favorite genres JRPGs and Visual Novels. I don't mind the amount of ports but when ranking a system I usually put emphasis on how many exclusive games it has as the deciding factor. And by exclusive I mean sequels and actual new games from 3rd Party. A game like Live A Live I consider to be a brand new game though since the original game never left Japan

Playing Visual Novels on this thing in Portable Mode is perfect as the OLED Screen really makes the colors pop

But what exclusives it has from first parties is fantastic all around. Xenoblade Chronicles (Especially XC2 and XCX), Fire Emblem Three Houses, Luigi Mansion 3, Mario + Rabbids games, Link's Awakening Remake (I consider this a new game since they completely overhauled it), Splatoon, Mario Odyssey etc

The amount of indies is great too. I discovered Steamworld Dig 2 while browsing through the eShop, it's my first Metriodvania and still my favorite in the genre

I wish that Switch had lot more games in other genre though. While we got all the Capcom Fighting Collections, Namco never released ports of their older Tekken Games on Switch. Specifically Tekken from the PS1, PS2 and PS3 Era. Same with Sega and Virtual Fighter Games

I wish Capcom released the original Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 with updated controls on Switch. If they really wanted to they could upres the backgrounds to make it more easier to play through. Instead we got cloud versions of RE2R and RE3R

Don't forgot Joycon Drift. Reason why I just connected a pro controller to my Switch even when I was playing in Portable Mode. I think I went through 9 pairs of Joycons

I love the system despite the faults and it even knocked down PS1 from the second place just due to the amount of Games it has

As for Switch 2, I expect ports of games that weren't able to run on Switch 1. Like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

I also expect from Switch 2 for games being announced from Developers especially Japanese Developers to have a Switch 2 version right out the gate alongside with PS5 and XSX

I love my Switch OLED and I still play a ton of games on it

Funny enough I've been playing a ton of simulation games on it like Eastward Octopia and Fantasy Life i

There's still a lot of gaps in the Switch library when it comes to genres but the selection of games is still HUGE

The Switch 2 is just gonna be more of the same…

…which is exactly why I'm excited for it.

Second best system I have ever owned, behind only the mighty SNES.

That said, Switch 1 still has a fair bit of life left in it; there's still plenty of software on the way and it will take years for most of its install base to move on.

Had a ton of fun with mine, even if I barely used it the last couple of years. BOTW, Hollow Knight, Octopath Traveler, Monster Hunter Rise and SMT V were the games I enjoyed the most, among many others.

Amazing system. I feel like the form factor and lower power pushed devs to making games more comfy. The low power also means less heat which makes it my preference for summer, which is really hot where I live.

The fact Nintendo got that much mileage out of a system with a tablet processor from a decade ago is astonishing. For a long time, the dream was that you played games on a big television and then when you wanted to go somewhere, you took the game with you seamlessly. And yeah there are handheld PCs and cloud saves now, but 20 years ago, all that stuff was science fiction. Portable console hardware was such a crazy idea and Nintendo actually did it.

I'm very interested to see what they've done with Switch 2. I don't know if they're going to be able to stretch it as long as they did with the original given how quickly things are still evolving. But Nintendo's secret weapon has always been the fact that they publish first party games so exquisite there's really no comparison.

I was very LTTP with the Switch only getting it in 2021. But man, I got it with BOTW having never played it or really seeing much of it, just constantly hearing how good it was. Blown away and was so good.
Followed up with MK8, Metroid: Dread and Super Mario 3D World - fantastic games and console.

Sold my Switch OLED a few weeks back, good bye friend. Looking forward to picking up my Switch 2 this week and resuming my TOTK save

My favorite system right now, got lot of blast with it.
Good Memories in single player, and blast memories with friends in MK8D with my friends at my place <3

The saddest part is that there is literally no reason to even turn it back on again, like I even play on my N64 and GameCube sometimes but with Switch 2 this just makes Switch 1 totally dead, I am thinking about removing the battery to be honest to preserve it

I own 460+ games for Switch... not buying switch 2; so its about the end of the line for me. Once Ps5 is done, Physical games disc are probably done; which means I'm out.

I think Switch will end up being my favourite system ever. I didn't expect it to, but it has just been a fantastic ride.

Here are some of my fondest memories.

March 2017
Launch. Coming out with Zelda: BotW was just magical, a huge adventure I had been waiting for ages. Then, soon after we got Arms, a beautifully designed, bizarre Nintendo first party game.

April 2019
Dark Souls on an Easter break. On my triple dip to the game, it finally clicked with me in St Emilion over an Easter break. I went to finish the game, and all the other souls games. Now I play almost exclusively Elden Ring, including Nightreign.

April 2020
Animal Crossing in the pandemic. What a perfect little escape, the game felt just so light, relaxing, immersive, when we were passing lockdown.

October 2021
We had just moved to French Polynesia, and I had an all new Metroid to dig into in our vacation rental.

May 2023
Finally, Tears of the Kingdom. May late nights with Laphroaig and exploring this game in London.

JqbnEdZ.jpeg

November 2023
Pikmin 4 for my birthday. A perfect day on Moorea with my wife.

And beyond this, there are so many more memories.

Putting a hundred hours to Super Smash Bros, playing on a GameCube controller.

The pure joy of Super Mario Odyssey, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze and Super Mario Wonder.

Endless hours of Splatoon multiplayer.

Getting addicted to Hollow Knight in Italy. Spending endless hours with Picross in Tahiti. Finally completing a Pokedex in a Pokemon game.

Unfolding the bizarre story of Deadly Premonition in Tetiaroa. The beauty of Octopath Traveller in Singapore.

Playing all the classic games with the NES, Super NES, Megadrive and N64 controllers.

Absolutely epic console.

I love you and hate you at the same time. yes, I'm jealous.

Be careful, someone that obviously wish you harm put a glass of white wine next to your charcuterie and fromage plate :messenger_face_screaming:

On topic,
I remember trying portable mode for the first time and it felt like i was going off he rails on a crazy train.

So I say goodbye to switch,
Goodbye to games, i tell you,
Goodbye to all the accessories,
I guess that we'll meet,
We'll meet on switch 2 (since everything is retrocompatible).

LOL no goodbyes for me it still gets hammered daily both at home & at work on my breaks. Switch holds the record now in my games collection of having the largest library of games i own on a system before that was the DS where i reached just a little over 400 on switch currently at 621 & rising there's still so many great games left to grab that i still haven't gotten around to it's an indie magnet. People always go on about oh nobody buys a switch for 3rd party games lol bullshit out of my switch library i'd say less than 50 are 1st party nintendo games the rest are 3rd party stuff.

Switch has some of the best rhythm games out there because it gets close to the arcade feeling, dotted through my collection are various full sized controllers and arcade sticks.

The joys of project diva using a full sized controller.

It's why i never bothered with next gen stuff, there was absolutely no reason for me to buy another console when all the types of games i love were released on switch.

Man... Is this Bruce Wayne's GAF account or what. Epic.

2nd favorite console after the NES. It got me back into gaming after a 9 year hiatus. The NES got me into gaming and the Switch got me back into it.

Honestly, one of my favourite consoles of all time. Up there with SNES, Dreamcast and PS4.

There is the tent pole stuff:
Splatoon 2&3
MK8 Deluxe
SMASH
Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
Zelda Breath of the Wild
Super Mario Odyssey
SMTV
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore (I really like this game. So under-rated).
Persona 5 Royal
Super Mario Wonder

But it's the depth, variety and quality of the (IMO) 2nd tier stuff that puts it over the top.
"Come on man", look at this list below. Sure a lot of it is old stuff, or remade, available elsewhere or whatever, but all of this quality is in one place. Cast iron classics. In the palm of your hand. Unbelievable.
FWIW, my close out farewell game is Roller Coaster Tycoon 3. I regret nothing.

Bayonetta 3 (and whole trilogy)
Bayonetta Cereza and the Lost Demon
Tetris99
Advance Wars 1+2
Fire Emblem Engage
Mr Driller Drillland
Pocket Card Jockey
Persona5 Tactica
Darkest Dungeon
CupHead
Dead Cells
One Piece Pirate Warriors 3 and 4
Mario 3D World and Bowser Fury
Skyrim
Space Harrier
Super Mario 3D AllStars

Fire Emblem Three houses

51 worldwide games
Lumines
Pokemon Violet
Pokemon Diamond remake
Pokemon Sword
Pokemon Unite
Shiren the Wanderer
Cruisin' Blast
Pinball FX3
Mario Golf Super Rush
Worms WMD
Street Fighter Anniversary Collection
Switch Sports
Ys VIII
OutRun

Its the console that got me back into console gaming after I walked away from it when Sega chucked the towel inm For that its always going to be an all time favourite. Can't be arsed listing my games, too many.

BOTW was my favourite, and it was my first ever experience of Zelda, I always assumed that they were full on RPG's which I have no time for. What an introduction to the series!

Here's my entire Switch library in all its glory.

Animal Crossing probably got more play time than all the other games combined.
Ring Fit Adventure was bought for my wife, but she hated it.
Nintendo Labo was very cool, had a lot of fun making the cardboard toys with my daughter but they're all broken in the attic now.
Still haven't started Xenoblade 3, so maybe that's one for the Switch 2 at some point.

This is so cool. Love all those accessories and how they expand the Switch experience. A vertical setup has long been a dream of mine, as has that train controller.

Looks like an absolute blast.

I have a launch OG Switch. Does it sell for more since, I think, it can be hacked? Not sure if I should do a basic Facebook Marketplace or ebay.

So many amazing exclusives you've missed out on...I'm guessing you just don't like certain genres like action or fighting or RPGs outside of the Xenoblade Chronicles games.

It's what the Wii U really wanted to be--and the final realization of the handheld/TV console hybrid. One of my favorite systems -- I'm still salty the last true 3D Mario was almost EIGHT YEARS AGO. There better be something big in the works.

Great console, one of Nintendo's best. Proof for me that software is ultimately what matters:

Breath of the Wild
Tears of the Kingdom
Metroid Dread
Super Mario Odyssey
Xenoblade Chronicles DE/2/3/X
Fire Emblem 3H/Engage
Splatoon 2/3
Bowser's Fury
Pikmin 4
Bayo 3
Animal Crossing
MK8D
Metroid Prime Remastered
Smash Bros Ultimate
Super Mario Wonder
MH Rise
Octopath
Unicorn Overlord
Mario Maker 2

Animal Crossing is about the only game I solo played more than 10 hours. I played a decent amount of Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros and Mario Party with my kids. I otherwise own BotW, Kirby and the forgotten lands, Pokemon: Sword and then my son has some other pokemon games. We never finished a single game.

I enjoyed my time with the Switch, but in retrospect, my time with it doesn't feel as involved as previous Nintendo consoles. I think since I got one (refurbished not too long after launch) I bought and played maybe.... <10 games on it? It was certainly not a bad system, it's just interesting to realize that there wasn't that much for me on there. But then again, I received a PS5 at launch and I think I'm about <5 there, lol.

At about 16/17 I started dabbling with PC more, but still kept consoles in rotation. The older I've gotten, I still try to keep it that way, but I've noticed I've leaned into PC more, especially with third party titles as they're typically cheaper there. I'm 41 now and honestly wish there were more on consoles that made me want to go out and buy one immediately just to play said game. It's a weird topic, because on one hand I like a future where exclusives are becoming extinct, but then again, exclusives are also what entice people to purchase said platform. So it goes both ways for me.

That being said, I'm looking forward to what the Switch 2 offers, and I'm curious if I'll dabble with it even more than the Switch.

Yeah, there was a lot of stuff I missed. It just looked so bad on a large TV, I played mostly on Xbox and PC instead. The only digital game I have is Mario vs Rabbids, which I didn't like very much.

I'm hoping to get more use out of the Switch 2. Any recommendations would be welcome.
