Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a perfect example of what bringing a classic to the modern era can be.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake indicates that there is still a lot of potential in the series' unique flavour of occult paranormal J-horror. Unfortunately, this experience is marred by tedious combat encounters, inconsistent pacing, and technical issues that keep it from reaching the heights of its modern horror remake contemporaries.

IGN Italy - Alessandra Borgonovo - Italian - 8 / 10
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake successfully resurrects the absolute masterpiece of the franchise. The visual overhaul, the suffocating sound design, and the new side stories deepen an already tragic and unforgettable narrative. While the updated combat system is mostly a step forward, questionable additions like 'enraged' spirits and a slightly unbalanced upgrade economy can artificially slow down the pacing, especially during the first playthrough. Still, these flaws cannot overshadow what remains a phenomenal, chilling, and emotionally devastating J-Horror experience that every genre fan should play.

Mashable - Chance Townsend - 4.5 / 5
'Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE' is a masterclass in Japanese horror that stumbles just enough in its combat to keep it from being a perfect game, but not nearly enough to stop it from being an essential one. Team Ninja built something genuinely beautiful and genuinely terrifying here, and the fact that I'll never touch it again is probably the most honest four-and-a-half stars I've ever given anything.

MonsterVine - Spencer Legacy - 4 / 5
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a pleasantly anxiety-inducing game that combines the creepy thrills of the horror genre with the sharp satisfaction of taking a good photo. Though there are a couple of bumps in the road when it comes to how smoothly the game plays, the atmosphere and vibes are unparalleled and, when combined with the creative photography-based gameplay, create a remake that is absolutely worth experiencing – so long as you have a bit of extra patience.

Netto's Game Room - Benjamin Bell - Recommended
FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is a haunting, modernized tribute to the golden age of survival horror. By blending rich Japanese folklore with its signature photography-based combat, the game forces players to confront their fears head on as they unravel the dark mysteries of the Lost Village. Though its steep learning curve isn't for everyone, the game is an unforgettable experience, and those who survive the village may find themselves drawn back to its beautiful, terrifying world time and time again.

NookGaming - Andrew Camac - 9 / 10
FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE has gone the route of the more successful remakes: it keeps everything that made the original game so memorable while adding extra content, changes the visuals, and makes it a little more unique rather than just improving the graphics and calling it a day.

It does a great job of not outright replacing the original but offering a new version of it for fans and newcomers alike, alongside a new level of challenge. This is an absolutely phenomenal jumping-in point for people who may have been curious about the series before, but were intimidated by starting with the fourth or fifth entry. It's still not going to be for everyone, but in this day and age where the survival horror is pulling quite the comeback, FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is going to once again prove the rule of two remains untouchable.

PS4Blog.net - EdEN - 9 / 10
The definitive way to experience a beloved survival horror classic

PlayStation LifeStyle - Tyler Treese - 9 / 10
A beautiful game that is often chilling, any horror game fan will want to check out Team Ninja's remake.

PlayStation Universe - Timothy Nunes - 8.5 / 10
When people talk about wanting remakes, Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake is exactly the quality of remake they have in mind. Overall, this is a fantastic way to experience a beloved classic on modern hardware.

Press Start - James Berich - 8 / 10
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a strong reimagining of a horror classic, smartly expanding on both combat and exploration from the original in clever ways. Despite such a strong and positive change in the fundamentals of the game, the locked and stuttering 30fps mode on consoles is a baffling choice for an otherwise stellar remake. Even so, this is Fatal Frame at its best and well worth any self-respecting horror fan's time.

Prima Games - Ali Hashmi - 8.5 / 10
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a shining example of how to revisit a classic without losing what made it special. From the terrifyingly detailed Minakami Village and superb character models to the refined Camera Obscura combat, which borrows elements from later entries, every update feels purposeful. The sisters' bond remains at the heart of the story, further enhanced by heartfelt gameplay touches, and the combination of organic exploration, plentiful scares, and an evolving mystery makes it an experience just as affecting now as it was on the PS2.

Push Square - Craig Reid - 7 / 10
Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake is arguably one of the scariest games we've ever played. Team Ninja has somehow managed to make an already terrifying game even more so, turning Minakami Village into a visually striking and tense playground for fear. The Camera Obscura combat remains novel and unique, but clunky controls and some drawn-out encounters can frustrate.

The Nerd Stash - Sid Natividad - 8 / 10
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake made some bold changes, but despite some dramatic overhauls, it remains faithful to the original. The game continues the trend of good horror-genre remakes and has the quality to satisfy longtime fans and attract newcomers to the franchise.

I am getting it anyway despite the demo being so janky. Wish they inlcuded the fps mode from og xbox, I think may help hidng all the 3rd person camera jank

I have this on PS3. Thanks to Sony for porting 1-3 to PSN Classics. I think I've had them all. The last two Mask of the Lunar Eclipse and Maiden of Black Water were pretty good. Maiden of Black Water being a bit better IMO. I am looking forward to this because this is considered the best one out of the lot. They're good while you keep the camera momentum going. The series has been one I wish I liked more than I do. It's got a fantastic concept to it, so I hope this remake drives it home.

I'm in if for no other reason than to support the franchise. The demo on Deck looked fine (for the hardware) but couldn't maintain 30fps so I'm hoping more enterprising folks can figure out a way to get it stable.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake tries to accomplish many things while bringing the classic title to current-gen platforms. And while the effort is largely successful, it might not be everybody's cup of tea in the way its developers probably hope.

The combat system, and enemy aggression in particular, is a major drawback especially in the early hours of the experience, while things don't get better even as you unlock more powerful upgrades for the Camera Obscura.

The game's performance is another sore spot, although it's far easier to overlook that in the big picture. And yet, the story, revamped visuals, and the general vibe of Minakami Village kept us coming back for more during our time with it.

Wait is there a demo? Lol

I've never played a single game in this series.
Now is the time to do so.

The first three are fantastic.
1&3 are linked, 2 can be played comfortably as a separate game.

I'd obviously recommend playing them all though.

2 has the atmosphere and music, 1&3 have the "scare factor". The first being unmatched in that area, in my opinion.

You're missing out, if you like horror games this one is a must.
I'd also advise you to play the remake of 4 and 5, both came out last year i believe and they are great but this one is recommended as the best in the Series.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake – Review Breakdown

Overall takeaway

  • The remake looks great and preserves the atmosphere, but
  • Combat changes are poorly balanced and drag the experience down.
  • Recommended mostly for diehard fans, unless combat gets patched.

Visual overhaul

Major improvements

  • Textures and environmental detail greatly improved
  • Indoor and outdoor areas look far more realistic than the PS2 original.
  • Lighting is one of the strongest upgrades:
    • rays through windows
    • realistic forest foliage movement
  • Character models for Mio and Mayu look excellent.

Minor issues

  • Facial animations lack polish.
  • A permanent film grain filteris applied:
    • meant to simulate an old camera recording
    • some players may find it distracting.
  • No option to disable the grain filter.

Gameplay changes

New hand-holding mechanic

  • Mio can hold Mayu's hand.
  • Restores:
    • health
    • willpower.

Problem

  • Story constantly separates the sisters, so the mechanic rarely gets full use.

Mayu's gameplay role

Still largely unchanged

  • Her injured leg makes her helpless in combat.
  • She becomes a liability during spirit encounters.

Combat interaction

  • Protecting her can sometimes create openings for attacks.
  • But she contributes little beyond that.

Camera Obscura combat system

Still the core mechanic.

Basic idea

  • Photograph attacking ghosts to damage them.
  • Timing shots during attacks causes high damage "Fatal Frame" shots.

New additions

  • Focus system
  • Zoom
  • Camera filters
  • Additional shot types.

Combat problems

The remake's biggest issue.

Enemy behavior changes

  • Ghosts are now:
    • far more aggressive
    • faster
    • teleport frequently.

Result

  • Harder to line up shots.
  • Combat becomes chaotic rather than strategic.

Mio's movement issues

Major complaint

Mio remains too slow, despite enemies being buffed.

Effects:
  • Hard to reposition
  • Hard to track teleporting enemies
  • Difficult to avoid attacks.

Dodge / evade system problems

  • Evade doesn't reposition you well.
  • Often places Mio directly into follow-up attacks.
  • Makes combat feel clunky.

Resource imbalance

Another major complaint.

Issues

  • Health drains quickly.
  • Healing items remain rare, just like the original.

Result

  • Combat becomes overly cautious.
  • Encourages avoiding fights instead of engaging them.

Combat pacing problem

Instead of tense encounters:

Players end up:
  • chipping away at ghost health
  • struggling with teleporting enemies
  • dealing with clunky movement.
Reviewer conclusion:
The difficulty comes from bad mechanics rather than good enemy design.

Exploration and lore

Outside combat, the game excels.

Strong points

  • Hidden lore scattered around the village.
  • Discoverable camera upgrades.
  • Environmental storytelling remains excellent.

Audio design

One of the remake's best features.

Improvements

  • 3D spatial audio
  • Helpful for tracking teleporting ghosts.
Sound design highlights:
  • distinctive camera reload sound
  • eerie soundtrack
  • strong environmental audio.

Performance

Major limitation

  • 30 FPS cap across consoles

Issues

  • Frame drops occur even on base PS5.
  • Especially noticeable during combat.
Reviewer opinion:
  • A 60 FPS option should have been included.

Side content

Another strong area.
  • Side stories integrate naturally.
  • Encourage exploration of Minami Village's history.
  • Add depth to the narrative world.

Story

Still one of the game's biggest strengths.
  • Dark themes
  • Psychological horror
  • Emotional narrative between sisters.
Reviewer still considers it one of the best horror stories in gaming.

Missing content

Some elements from earlier versions may not be included:

Reportedly absent:
  • Haunted House mode
  • Deep Crimson Butterfly endings.

Final verdict

Strengths

  • Excellent atmosphere
  • Beautiful visual upgrade
  • Strong audio design
  • Engaging exploration
  • Classic story remains powerful.

Weaknesses

  • Combat badly balanced
  • Mio moves too slowly
  • Ghost aggression too high
  • 30 FPS cap
  • Performance dips
  • Some missing modes.

Reviewer recommendation

  • Wait for combat adjustments or patches.
But if you can tolerate the combat issues:
  • The remake is still a uniquely terrifying horror experience.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake – Review Breakdown (Noisy Pixel)

Final Score: 8 / 10

Overall impression:
  • A faithful remake that respects the original
  • Strong atmosphere and horror design
  • Some uneven combat systems
  • But still a very compelling survival horror experience

Series Context

  • Fatal Frame has been dormant for years.
  • Koei Tecmo has recently:
    • Remastered older titles
    • Reintroduced the series to modern audiences.
Goal:
  • Gauge interest for future entries.
This remake could serve as:
  • A foundation for future Fatal Frame games.

Story Overview

The game follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu.

Opening premise:
  • The sisters are in the woods.
  • Mayu follows a crimson butterfly into the forest.
  • The two end up in Minakami Village, a haunted ghost village.
Key elements:
  • Discovery of the Camera Obscura (spirit-fighting camera).
  • Encounter with ghosts and past spirits tied to the village's curse.

Narrative Structure

Story presentation relies heavily on:
  • environmental storytelling
  • ghost encounters
  • hidden lore.
Information is revealed through:
  • documents
  • notes
  • supernatural photographs.
Supporting spirits provide:
  • backstory
  • emotional context
  • insight into the village's dark history.

Narrative Quality

The reviewer describes the story as:
  • somewhat predictable
  • but still engaging.
Strengths:
  • Strong mystery
  • Interesting late-game twists
  • Emotional themes between the twins.

New Gameplay Mechanic – Hand Holding

A new feature introduced in the remake.

What it does

Mio can hold Mayu's hand.

Benefits:
  • restores health
  • restores willpower.

Gameplay purpose

Strengthens the emotional connection between the sisters.

Missed Opportunities with the Mechanic

Reviewer believes the system could have gone further.

Suggested possibilities:
  • ordering Mayu to stay behind for protection
  • cooperative puzzle solving
  • more twin-based gameplay mechanics.
Instead:
  • the mechanic feels underused.

Exploration Systems

Exploration remains a major part of the experience.

The village is designed with:
  • hidden items
  • secret paths
  • lore collectibles.

Item-Revealing Light Mechanic

A clever exploration system.

Players can use a light to reveal hidden items.

Tradeoff:
  • using the light may spawn a ghost earlier.
Result:
  • players must decide whether to risk triggering enemies.
This creates:
  • deliberate pacing
  • tension while exploring.

Atmosphere and Environmental Design

One of the game's strongest elements.

Atmospheric features include:
  • heavy fog
  • environmental effects
  • strong sound design.
The village feels:
  • oppressive
  • eerie
  • constantly threatening.

Survival Horror Philosophy

Fatal Frame differs from many modern horror games.

Design philosophy:
  • intentionally slow pacing
  • player vulnerability
  • minimal empowerment.
Unlike many modern horror titles:
  • you never feel fully in control.

Combat System – Camera Obscura

Your primary weapon.

Combat involves:
  1. aiming the camera
  2. waiting for ghosts to attack
  3. capturing a Fatal Frame shot.
Timing the shot correctly deals massive damage.

Film Management

Film acts as ammunition.

Important mechanics:
  • different film types
  • limited supply
  • strategic usage required.
Running out of film forces players to rely on weaker shots.

New Combat Tools

The remake introduces filters.

Three major filters:
  • Paraspiral
  • Radiant
  • Exposure
These modify combat effects.

Examples:
  • ignoring enemy defenses
  • stronger charged attacks.

Learning Curve of Filters

Initially confusing.

The game does not clearly explain:
  • which filters work best against specific enemies.
Once players learn them:
  • combat becomes easier.

Skill Bead

Upgrade system.

Players find skill beads throughout the environment.

Uses:
  • enhance filters
  • unlock new abilities.

Backtracking and Exploration

Filters can also:
  • reveal hidden paths
  • unlock new doors.
Encourages players to revisit earlier areas.

Secret Photo Opportunities

Another exploration reward.

Players can capture:
  • hidden spirit photos
  • lore moments.
Great for completionists.

Combat System Issues

Combat contains some frustrating design elements.

Biggest issue:

Enemy Aggravated State

Spirits can enter an aggravated mode.

Effects:
  • heal themselves
  • become stronger.
The player must land a Fatal Frame shot to break the state.

Problem with the Aggravated System

The system has random triggers

This creates problems:
  • enemies repeatedly heal
  • fights drag on too long.
Some encounters can last:
  • 10 minutes or more.

Resulting Frustration

Players may feel:
  • they are playing incorrectly
  • they are being unfairly punished.
The intended solution is:
  • switching filters strategically.
But this becomes difficult when:
  • film runs out.

Charm System

Players can equip charms that increase stats.

However:
  • stat boosts are barely noticeable.
Another issue:
  • the game does not clearly show how stats change.

Combat Improvements

Despite issues, the remake introduces helpful features.

Accessibility options include:
  • lock-on targeting
  • auto-aim.
These help new players adapt to the camera combat.

Combat Rhythm

Once the systems click:

Players fall into a rhythm:
  1. bait enemy attacks
  2. wait for the Fatal Frame window
  3. trigger powerful shots.

Enemy Variety

The game features many unique ghosts.

Each spirit has:
  • unique backstory
  • unique appearance
  • different combat behavior.

Lack of Major Boss Battles

One weakness noted by the reviewer.

Most enemies are:
  • regular spirits
  • story antagonists.
There are few true boss fights.

Unkillable Wraith

One major encounter involves a ghost that cannot be defeated.

The only solution:
  • run away.
Problem:
  • the game does not clearly communicate this.
Players often:
  • die repeatedly before realizing it.

Presentation and Immersion

The remake strongly emphasizes cinematic horror.

Highlights:
  • expressive character animations
  • eerie ghost designs
  • intense sound design.

Core Strength of the Remak

The developers did not reinvent the formula.

Instead they:
  • preserved the original gameplay identity
  • expanded its systems.

Final Thoughts

Strengths:
  • oppressive atmosphere
  • memorable ghost designs
  • strong story
  • immersive exploration.
Weaknesses:
  • uneven combat systems
  • occasional frustrating mechanics.

Final Verdict

Fatal Frame 2 Remake succeeds because:
  • it respects the original
  • it modernizes the experience without losing its identity.
Even with combat quirks:
  • the slow pacing
  • haunting atmosphere
  • emotional twin narrative
make it a standout survival horror experience.

Score: 8/10

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake – Review Breakdown

Overall impression

  • The reviewer sees it as a faithful remake of a survival horror classic.
  • It preserves:
    • the eerie atmosphere
    • the tragic story
    • the haunted village setting
  • But it also feels like a game that still carries too much PS2-era design baggage.

Story / premise

  • You play as Mio, trapped in the abandoned Minikami Village with her twin sister Mayu.
  • The sisters are tied to:
    • a failed ritual
    • a curse involving twins
    • the village being locked in an endless night.
  • The present slowly mirrors the village's tragic past.
  • Reviewer says the story:
    • can drift into melodrama at times
    • but remains compelling enough to pull you through.

Horror / atmosphere

This is the part the reviewer liked most.

Strong points

  • Ghosts often appear subtly:
    • at the end of hallways
    • in the distance
    • disappearing when you focus on them
  • The horror works best in these quiet, understated moments.
  • The visual remake of the village is praised:
    • dark environments
    • lantern-lit spaces
    • strong use of limited light
  • Audio design is also highlighted as a major strength.
Bottom line:
  • The atmosphere is one of the remake's biggest wins.

Visual remake

  • The game is described as a clear visual upgrade over the original.
  • Minikami Village looks great in its updated form.
  • Darkness and lighting are used effectively to create tension.

Technical performance

This is one of the reviewer's major complaints.

Problems noted

  • Played on PS5
  • Frame drops happened often enough to be distracting
  • Game is capped at 30 FPS
  • Even on PS5 Pro, it apparently stays at 30 FPS
Reviewer says:
  • even someone who doesn't usually focus on performance could notice the instability.

New additions in the remake

The reviewer does acknowledge some good new content.

Included additions

  • New side stories that expand ghost backstories
  • Collectible beads used to upgrade the Camera Obscura
  • More incentives to explore the village thoroughly
These additions help flesh out the world and reward curiosity.

Camera Obscura combat

The reviewer calls the camera system unique, but ultimately hates playing with it.

How it works

  • Mio fights ghosts by photographing them with the Camera Obscura
  • Better-framed and closer shots do more damage
  • Film type affects power

Reviewer's issue

They found combat:
  • slow
  • repetitive
  • tension-killing
Their description:
  • every fight became a drawn-out circle-strafe routine
  • dodge
  • line up a shot
  • wait
  • repeat
  • over and over until the ghost finally vanishes.

Main combat criticism

The reviewer's biggest problem is that combat breaks the game's pacing.

Why

  • Just when the atmosphere starts to work, a ghost encounter begins
  • Then the game slows to a crawl
  • Fights often drag on for minutes
Instead of making ghosts scarier, the system made them feel:
  • tedious
  • exhausting
  • like interruptions.

Acknowledgment of the design intent

To be fair, the reviewer does understand what Fatal Frame is trying to do.

Intended design

  • The camera forces you to confront ghosts up close
  • You can't just keep distance like in other horror games
  • In theory, that should make encounters more frightening

But in practice

  • The repetition drains the fear out of it.

Enemy design

The reviewer still praises the ghosts themselves.

Good points

  • Ghost behavior reflects how they died / who they were
  • Child ghosts are smaller and faster
  • Some enemies have memorable encounter setups
Example highlighted:
  • a drowned woman attacking from beneath a bridge.
That kind of encounter showed the potential of the system.

What the reviewer wanted instead

They suggest the combat would have worked better if:
  • enemies died in fewer shots
  • ghosts were more dangerous
  • fights were shorter but more intense
That would preserve:
  • tension
  • fear
  • pacing.
Instead, combat becomes a repetitive slowdown.

Final verdict

Strengths

  • faithful recreation of a classic
  • strong story
  • excellent atmosphere
  • beautiful village redesign
  • memorable ghost concepts

Weaknesses

  • sluggish, repetitive combat
  • persistent frame drops
  • 30 FPS cap
  • gameplay often undermines the atmosphere

Final takeaway

The reviewer's conclusion is basically:
  • The remake succeeds as an atmospheric horror experience
  • but fails to modernize the gameplay enough
  • so it feels less like a full modern revival and more like a very polished relic from the past.

Fatal Frame and survival horror in general is a very niche genre; reviews are useless because they are mostly coming from people who have pre-determined biases against it and criticize it for being exactly what I like about it.

Koei Tecmo have heard all the negative feedback about the film grain and plan to address it.

So as per usual, people who play the game at launch will get a worse experience than those who wait a few weeks.

🤷‍♂️

Great. They were batshit crazy to ship that game on consoles like this! I have never seen anything like this.

I am getting it anyway despite the demo being so janky. Wish they inlcuded the fps mode from og xbox, I think may help hidng all the 3rd person camera jank
The Camera View when attacking is the jankest part of the game and you want the whole game to be like that?

The Camera View when attacking is the jankest part of the game and you want the whole game to be like that?
I find that less of an issue than the way the main character move and getting in the way of the camera than anything because she fills up like 30% of the screen. Her animation looks straight out of PS2 which breaks the immersion even more. Rather have it in fps permanently so I don't need to deal with all of that. Not sure how the hand holding part would work though

I wonder if any of the character modelling staff that worked on Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin worked on this.

Would go some way to explaining the 'heavy' (bluntly: crap) rendering performance and 30fps cap on all consoles.

Fully deserved review scores, i'm glad it's being shit on for the technical shortcomings. No 60fps on Pro or motion controls for anything but Switch 2 handheld mode is ridiculous.

This remake deserved more love. The OG is the best in the series and this is the best they could do? They could have put Fatal Frame on the map where it belongs. :/

Just re-release the original on GOG and let me die.

Not buying this game till they give us an option to turn off the film grain. It looks like shit on the ps5 and gave me a migraine in the demo.

I've made a video discussing game-design-differences between original and remake, no spoilers. Sadly, this one is a big miss. Being quite familiar with the old structure, the remake has been drastically dumbed down and been turned into a mid action game.

I mean they did have Team Ninja staff help on this didn't they?

How does it compare to IV and V?

I mean they did have Team Ninja staff help on this didn't they?

How does it compare to IV and V?

It has the best controls out of those, but the level design is now just as linear. Unlike Silent Hill 2 Remake where they expanded old puzzles and introduced almost no new handholding, in FF2R they just took out puzzles or dumbed them down as if this was Ninja Gaiden Sigma. And the red butterflies are now a generic FPS/yellow paint equivalent. Only big plus compared to 4/5 is that it doesn't have the egregious backtracking - but that wasn't in the original to begin with.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake – Review Breakdown

Overall takeaway

  • The remake is artistically stunning and faithful to the original.
  • It successfully modernizes many aspects.
  • But modern gameplay additions sometimes undermine the horror.
Final feeling from the reviewer:
  • impressed by the remake
  • but conflicted about some design choices.

Core premise

The story remains mostly unchanged from the original.

You play as Mio, searching for her twin sister Mayu after both become trapped in Minakami Village.

Key story elements:
  • the village is cursed
  • the curse stems from a failed ritual involving twins
  • ghosts of the past haunt the village
  • Mio must uncover the truth to escape.

Narrative style

One of the game's strengths is its restraint in storytelling.

Key characteristics

  • very few cutscenes
  • Mio rarely speaks
  • minimal exposition.
Instead, story details come from:
  • diaries
  • ghost reenactments of past events
  • spirit voices preserved in stones.
This creates a quiet, atmospheric narrative.

Atmosphere and exploration

The reviewer praises Minakami Village's design.

Village design

  • small
  • few roads
  • interconnected houses.
Returning to locations changes the experience:
  • new ghosts appear
  • events unfold differently
  • tension remains even in familiar places.
Examples:
  • Osaka House – familiar but still tense
  • Kurosawa House – terrifying every time.

Horror design

The game emphasizes subtle psychological horror.

Examples

  • ghosts appearing briefly in hallways
  • spirits vanishing when you try to focus on them
  • doors opening slowly with the possibility of an attack.
Many scares rely on anticipation and uncertainty.

Even when nothing happens:
  • tension remains high.

Combat system – Camera Obscura

The Camera Obscura remains the core gameplay mechanic.

Basic idea

  • photograph ghosts to damage them.
Effectiveness depends on:
  • framing
  • distance
  • film type.

Fatal Frame mechanic

The most powerful shots are Fatal Frames.

These require:
  • waiting for a ghost to attack
  • capturing the exact moment.
Successful timing:
  • deals massive damage
  • restores willpower.

Willpower system

A new mechanic introduced in the remake.

What it does

  • powers special shots
  • drains when running or taking damage.
If Mio loses all willpower:
  • she becomes vulnerable.
Reviewer view:
  • mixed feelings
  • not essential
  • but adds an extra combat layer.

Combat philosophy

Fatal Frame combat is unique because it forces you to:
  • stand your ground
  • look directly at the enemy
  • risk being attacked.
This creates a fear-based combat system.

The reviewer appreciates that:
  • Mio is always vulnerable
  • you must literally face the horror.

Ghost design

Each ghost behaves differently based on its backstory.

Examples:
  • child ghosts move quickly
  • certain spirits have unique attack patterns.
Memorable encounters mentioned:
  • Woman in the Box
  • fighting two ghosts in a locked room
  • Drowned woman beneath a bridge.

Escort mechanics

Occasionally you must protect Mayu.

Reviewer says:
  • it doesn't feel like a typical escort mission
  • it simply adds another layer of tension.

Visual presentation

The remake significantly improves visuals.

Highlights include:
  • updated environments
  • improved character models
  • enhanced sound design.
The reviewer says many images are haunting and unforgettable.

Camera perspective change

The remake removes the original's fixed camera angles.

It now uses an over-the-shoulder camera, similar to Resident Evil 4.

Benefits

  • smoother gameplay
  • better control.

Downsides

  • slightly reduces horror tension
  • removes some cinematic unease.

New side content

Team Ninja added:
  • new locations
  • new side stories.
The reviewer says:
  • these additions fit seamlessly
  • they feel like they could have existed in the original game.

Hand-holding mechanic

A new feature allows Mio to hold Mayu's hand.

Effects:
  • restores health
  • restores willpower
  • slows movement.
The reviewer likes this feature because it:
  • reinforces the twins' emotional bond
  • ties gameplay to narrative themes.

Camera customization systems

Several upgrades were added.

Charms

Provide bonuses like:
  • increased damage
  • reduced damage taken.

Prayer beads

Allow upgrades such as:
  • faster focus
  • manual zoom.
Reviewer considers these improvements good changes.

The problematic addition – Filters

The reviewer believes filters are the remake's biggest flaw.

Filters allow players to switch combat modes.

Examples:
  • Standard filterbalanced
  • Perceptual filter – see ghosts through walls
  • Exposure filter – effective against aggravated ghosts
  • Radiant filter – massive short-range damage.

Aggravated ghosts mechanic

Ghosts can become aggravated.

When this happens:
  • they recover health
  • attack faster
  • deal more damage.
Initially this feels frustrating.

It can force players to:
  • waste powerful film
  • fight longer battles.

Radiant filter problem

Once upgraded:
  • the Radiant filter becomes extremely powerful.
It can:
  • trivialize ghost encounters
  • trivialize bosses.
Reviewer quote summary:
By the end, the ghosts weren't trapping me in rooms — I was trapping them.

Thematic conflict

The reviewer believes these gameplay additions undermine the horror theme.

Originally:
  • Mio is weak
  • the camera is her fragile lifeline.
With upgrades:
  • the player can become powerful
  • fear disappears.
Example change in mindset:

Early game:
  • "I hope there's no ghost in that well."
Late game:
  • "Come out, I dare you."

"Gamey" mechanics problem

The reviewer also criticizes some modern RPG-style additions.

Examples:
  • collectible prayer beads
  • photographing dolls for unlockables
  • candy pickups.
These mechanics feel:
  • artificial
  • disconnected from the story.

The horror identity issue

The reviewer believes Fatal Frame works best when:
  • the player shares Mio's fear
  • combat is tense
  • survival feels fragile.
When the player becomes powerful:
  • the game starts to feel more like Resident Evil-style action horror.
This clashes with Fatal Frame's identity.

Final verdict

Strengths

  • beautiful remake
  • haunting atmosphere
  • powerful story
  • thoughtful world design
  • excellent horror pacing.

Weaknesses

  • some modern mechanics break immersion
  • filters make combat too easy
  • gameplay systems sometimes feel artificial.

Final conclusion

The reviewer's closing thought:
  • The remake is still excellent.
  • But modernization slightly diluted the intimacy of its horror.
Analogy used:
Like photography, remakes attempt to capture a specific moment in time.
Crimson Butterfly Remake may not be perfect, but it still captures that moment beautifully.
