I know this has been done before (probably to death, so just humor me, will ya?), but I didn't want to bump some ancient thread.

So, what are your favorites?

As for myself:

China:
In The Mood For Love (Wong Kar-Wai, 2000)
ff31ck.jpg

Korea:
Oldboy (Chan-wook Park, 2003)
ff24cs.jpg

Japan:
Throne Of Blood (Akira Kurosawa, 1957)
ff18px.jpg

Killer, Hard-Boiled, Tai-Chi Master, Fist of Legend, God of Gamblers 1 and 2, Zaitoichi, Brother, and IA

Japan - Seven Samurai

China - too many to pick one. Hard Boiled, Iron Monkey, The Blade, Drunken Master 2, Once a Thief just touches on my favs

Korean - I need to start watching more of these films. I have only seen Shuri and Old Boy. Both good but I would not rank either of them as a favorite

How could I have forgotten Drunken Master 2 and Once Upon a Thief... (I think the remake of it makes me forget anything with that title... :p)

Rather than write up all my usual recommendations all over again, I'll just copy whatever I wrote in one of the earlier threads...ah, here we go:

God of Cookery - Earlier Stephen Chow comedy about shaolin cooking madness. Freakin' awesome.

Ping Pong - Japanese manga adaptation about teen agnst, sport, and the glory of ping pong, all with an element of the fantsatic. This film is universally loved, I shit you not.

Tampopo - Urban cowboys meet ramen stands and absurdist vignettes in the most amazing film about food you will ever see. Brilliant, touching, and very, very funny. WARNING: Under no circumstances should you watch this film while hungry. Any of Juzo Itami's other films are well worth watching, particularly the comic attacks on the yakuza that got him killed. Minbo (aka The Gentle Art of Japanese Extortion) is particularly amusing, as are the Taxing Woman films.

Cure and Pulse - Kiyoshi Kurosawa (no relation) makes amazing contemporary horror films. Cure is a serial killer flick with a bizzare, horrific twist. Pulse mixes social commentary with haunting visuals and a quietly apocolyptic ending. I can't recommend these enough.

Graveyard of Honor (1975) - The quinessential yakaza film, courtesy of Kinji (Battle Royale) Fukasaku. This is the bleak, incredibly violent true story of a gangster who was out of control and utterly without honor, even by the standards of his fellows. The rest of Fukasaku's yakuza films (particularly five-film epic The Yakuza Papers or Street Mobster) are also highly recommended. Takahashi (Audition) Miike's recent remake, Shin Graveyard of Honor, is also quite good, though somewhat more subdued.

Branded to Kill - Seijun Suzuki's absurdist yakuza masterpiece, which got him kicked out of the studio system. The Number 3 killer in Japan does battle to become the Number 1 Killer before someone else gets him first. Stunning visuals, a terrific jazz soundtrack, femme fatales, rice huffing, and an extended finale that must be seen to be appreciated. See also: Any other Suzuki film; Criterion recently released Youth of the Beast and Fighting Elegy in R1.

After Life - Hirokazu Koreeda's quietly humorous meditation on death. As assorted group of the recently deceased find themselves in a somewhat run-down retreat where the beauracrats of the afterlife inform them that they will spend the next week determining their most important memories, filming them, and then living in them forever. Very funny, very touching, and guaranteed to make you think.

Absolutely anything by Akira Kurosawa - If you haven't seen Rashomon or The Seven Samurai, what the hell are you waiting for? If you have, try some of his non-samurai work like The Lower Depths or High and Low.

Okay, so those are virtually all Japanese recommendations. I'll throw in a recommendation for The Tale Of Two Sisters (which I thought wrapped itself up quite neatly), a beautifully shot Korean horror film. Also, Chungking Express is positively amazing in a slice of (bizzare) life sort of way; I really need to sit down and watch In The Mood For Love one of these days. Finally, if you like Oldboy get your hands on a copy of Sympathy For Mr. Vengence which is excellent in an incredibly harsh sort of way.

Quoted for truth and importance. If you havent seen any Kurosawa, shame on you. Aside from the already mentioned titles, his '85 film Ran is a complete masterpiece.

Yeah, though it lacked the overall polish, style, and "cool" factor of Oldboy, Sympathy is great. Also, the final part of the trilogy, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, is out soon too.

Kikujiro - (who would've known the guy from most extreme elimination would make such beautiful movies)

Shower - Chinese

Ran - Is truly incredible.

Zhang Yimou's To Live. It isnt just my favorite asian film, but my favorite film of all time. I personally (well, obviously) prefer it over his more renown work, Raise the Red Lantern.

Oh!! I want to add Enter the Fat Dragon but Sammo Hung... Not the best movie just a favorite of mine

I pretty much liked all the movies I've seen of these directors but if I had to pimp some (though I'm sure I'm forgetting a few):

Akira Kurosawa - Yojimbo, Ran, Seven Samurai
Wong Kar-Wai - Chungking Express, ITMFL, Days of Being Wild
Stephen Chow - Kung Fu Hustle, Love on Delievery, A Chinese Odyssey 1 & 2
Yimou Zhang drama's - The Road Home, To Live, Shanghai Triad

Then of course Fist of Legend, Legend of the Drunken Master and Enter the Dragon top out the martial arts movies.

I really need to see some Korean flicks, but at least I did get to see the awesome kdrama, The Sandglass. Hmm..

is Oldboy good? I'm interested in that movie after seeing this thread

sorry for derailing the topic a little

My favorite film of 2003, and somewhere between #10 and #5 on my all-time list. But be warned, if you dont dig graphic violence and
incest
, this might not be your style.
Oh, and animals were harmed during the making of this movie :lol .

Honestly though, its intense, raw, stylish as hell, well shot, cut, directed, and features a phenomenal lead performance. Hell, I could have a thread dedicated to that film alone.

And ... wtf... why did you reveal the secret of the entire movie? (spoiler tagged or no)

Im a bad person.

But seriously, I just thought everyone in this thread had pretty much seen it already. Not to mention that its fairly predictable. I mean,
within minutes of Mido's first appearance, I had her pegged as Daesu's estranged daughter
.

i'm also a big fan of his. i need to watch "not one less". and i'll keep your recommendation in mind. thank you for mentioning him though.

japan: rashomon, high and low, 7 samurai, sonatine, sword of doom, kikujiro
china: shanghai triad, raise the red lantern, the road home
thailand: ong-bak, last life in the universe
hk: the killer, snake in the monkey's shadow, drunken master, police story, 5 deadly venoms, infernal affairs, god of cookery, kunfu hustle, running on karma
korea: my sassy girl, oldboy, sympathy..., joint security area, attack the gas station

edit: added, ENTIRE WKW collection, sans some of his earlier stuff. i am his biggest fan in the world, so it just skipped my mind to mention his movies.

I really dont know much about asian cinema outside of old school John woo and martial arts movies.

I adore Killer, hardboiled, better tommorow trilogy, god of gamblers etc.. Chow yun fat is the is the baddest son of a bitch in cinema.

I tried to watch seven samurai but it gets kinda long and boring, i have no doubt this movie was huge when it came out but i guess you have to watch it with an open mind to appreciate it fully.

HK: The Mission, Running out of Time, Lots of Lung fu flicks and Infernal Affairs

Japan: Sword of Doom, Seven Samurai BAttle Royal ( have not seen many japanese films but just now have been realizing the greatness)

Korea: Old boy, Attack the Gas station, Tae Guki

Attack the Gas station was a riot, good choice nitewulf

Anyways guys I have been looking for Curse and pulse have they been Released on R1 dvds yet?
