For me, it's got to be:
Red Dead Revolver and when I get my copy, probably Stranger.

How's about you guys?

Fucking awesome. Still a MAME favorite for my friends and me.

I haven't really played much in the way of them, although I did reasonably enjoy Wild Arms 3

How does Wild Arms 3 play? I've always been intrigued by it, but I've never seen it on sale anywhere here (England - land of things released very late).

Red Dead Revolver is in a league of its own, as far as I'm concerned. Most Western-themed games merely contain a few Western influences, while RDR is 100 % Western.

^^^was wondering when someone else would finally mention that game. :)

Indeed, that game rocked hard on arcades and consoles.

Still though, can't call it the absolute best since it ties dead even with Outlaws for pc. :D

Lone Ranger for NES one of my old favs.

I personally thought Red Dead Revolver was fucking great. I seriously don't know why that game gets flak, the action, atmosphere, art style, and music are all fantastic and fit the theme perfectly, and it's just such a fun game.

Sunset Riders, of course. I really want to get Oddworld Stranger, too.

I have wanted a Wild West RPG/MMORPG for the last decade now. Sigh.

When I say RPG .. I mean Fallout/Wasteland clone ... not Wild Arms.

Sunset Riders (arcade/home)
Cheyenne (arcade)
Gunsmoke (home)

*I haven't played it yet, but Stranger looks awesome.

and if it counts Rising Zan

Sunset Riders was so fscking fab. Still a damn shame they didn't made a sequel. I've got it on SNES and Mega Drive (Genises), and I'm still playing it once in a while.

Outlaws was also a pretty cool game a few years ago, made by Lucas Arts. The game wasn't that pretty though, but the gameplay was way better other shooters at that time.

IMO:

WA2 < WA3 < WA1

I'd pick it up anyway if you're a fan of Wild ARMs period.

Gunfright (ultimate) ruled on MSX and Speccy.
There was a Blood Bros/cabal clone on the Snes, which was pretty cool (had a steampunk-western setting) by Jaleco iirc.
Stranger's is great.
Also Red Dead Revolver was much better than i would have thought.
