FF VII Advent Children - 1up.com review

A good movie. But only for fans.
The action scenes are really smartly handled.
It's clearly not a movie made to expand FFVII but more to remind us of the wonderfull universe. Cloud is abit to girly looking for my taste(...) but his personality is definetly there.
Good movie, for fans.

Thumbs up.

8.5 is just about right.

Such a long wait (2 years) that my anticipation was gone by the time it came out. An entertaining movie to reminisce about Final Fantasy VII though, I'm sure crazier fans will absolutely love it.

The story is weak
The camera angles are awesome
The action is mediocre and very anime-ish (well, what to expect)

7 ish

but then again, i'm not a reporter...

I disliked it. We got it a couple days before it was out with fansubs...

Story was really weak, everything was pretty poorly tied together. Kind of reminded me of why Japanese films don't get a lot of international attention anymore... it felt like it took them that huge amount of time to tell a fifteen minute story.

The fighting scenes were really cool, and stuff did look good, but I tired of them quickly for some reason. I LOVED their animatrix short and spirits within. Go figure.

The people who did the animatrix short and spirits within are different. The now closed Square Pictures was a studio in Hawaii. A number of people from there now work at Sprite Animation Studios..

i know the hawaii renderfarm/team was closed, but i thought most went back to square in japan?

As a stand alone movie I think it's quite bad. As fanservice it's very good, although I wish we could have seen more of the supporting cast (Yuffie, Barret, Vincent and so on). The music disappointed me. There wasn't a single piece of music that really took me back to FFVII.

Neither movie was good. 4/10 for AC.

That's pretty much where I stand.
I think the composition of the final fight scene could have been done MUCH better.
And the end.... Oh GOD!!
Square could have ripped my eye's out, and it would have been better.

But I guess this was for FF7 Fans...

Uhhh.....

I know, but that's not what I mean. The way it was performed/presented didn't tug at my heartstrings, so to speak. Better? Also, it was missing some of my favourites, but that's just personal preference, of course.

Most were subcontractors. A skeleton team to do the Animatrix stayed on board while the rest went back to Japan or the USA. There may be a little crossover, but probably not a lot. I think quite a few went to Shirogumi Syndicate (FX house responsible for Returner, etc).

Some of the Japanese staff were absorbed into Square Japan, but most of the non-Japanese staff had to find jobs at other animation and VFX studios (quite a few worked on the Matrix sequels for instance)

That makes some more sense..but hearing Aeris' theme certainly brought back some memories.

Isn't there any, like, new music? (haven't seen it yet) The soundtrack was the only thing that interested me about this project, but I'm really not interested in hearing rearrangements of FFVII tracks.

I don't know, but there sure was a lot of stuff I didn't recognize for one reason or another. Either way, I don't think it will hold up well as a stand-alone soundtrack.

Music was fine for me. Hearing Tifa's and Aeris's theme sure brings memories.

Only wish they'd of used the boss music, I really wanna hear an arranged version of that.

Story - Fail
Music - Fail
Action - Pass

Regardless of that, it was still a good movie. I watched it several times, I might even watch it again in English dub form to see if they did it properly. It gave me my fix, also the last 4 minutes of the credits pulled the heart strings.

They did, watch the movie again and listen closely.

Was the map music there? That's one of my favourites, and I didn't recognize it if it was in there. Same goes for the loot screen theme and several others.

Think really hard. It'll come to you.
the fact that it's based on a game franchise is a pretty fucking weak justification for them to review it. it's a movie and 1up isn't a movie review site.

Gimme a hint, I'm watching the fights and I can't pick it out.

Honestly I can't remember which it is. I'd have to rewatch the movie. I just recall hearing it and mentioning it to someone a few days ago. :lol
It might have been the Kadaj fight near the end....

It's not just based on. It's 100% pure fanservice for fans of that particular game and the movie is of next to zero interest to anyone who hasn't played FFVII, save for a few CG nuts here and there.

Not that fight

I agree that "the soap opera piano music has to go". Uematsu fucking sucks. Get someone who can compose with a post-1996 synth library, like Shimomura or Hamauzu, for god's sake!

The sound mix is:

Dialogue dialHEY HERE'S SOME UEMATSU PIANOOOOOOlogue dialogue diaBUMP BUMP BUMMMMMlogue dialogue dialogue dialUEMATSU'S BAAAAAACKgue

It's subtle as a crutch, seriously

Can't really imagine why anyone would care enough to post something like this multiple times. Dunno what's 'weak' about it. It's about FFVII, and I've played and beaten FFVII. So I reviewed the movie. Big whoop. It's like, if you don't think my opinion is as valid as Pete Travers, then don't read it. It's reviewed. Whoops! Oh well!

For people who do want a forecast of what to expect out of the movie when it's localized and hits the states, they're covered if they visit our site.

OPM reviews movies in their magazine, and this is more directly related to any video game franchise than any game-related Uwe Boll turd in existence. Que sera sera.~

Thumbs up from me too, but a reluctant one. I was a huge FFVII fan a while ago and the characters evoke a lot of nostalgia.

But I can't help but feel this movie is crippled and twisted by Square's desire to copy The Matrix. The entire final duel was a ripped off version of the Neo - Smith duel in Revolutions, complete with a similar sounding choral soundtrack. It's pretty amazing that the 1up review makes nary a mention of this. It's the final duel and the weakest part of the film in its evokation of a bad movie called The Matrix Revolutions.

Some of the action scenes also dragged endlessly for no point at all. I would have prefered an Advent Children set more firmly in the world of Final Fantasy VII, without cellphones, cars, and helicopters than the one Square put on screen. I think without Sakaguchi, they've lost the creative vision of what the game was about.

6.5 and that's from a FFVII fan.

I liked it. Awesome action and good FF music. The story was a little bland though and the final battle could have been better.

exactly what i was thinking. why is a game site reviewing a movie?
They reviewed Xenosaga, didn't they?

Heh, but anyway ... I agree that it was good for the fans. I enjoyed it just for the fact that it tied into so many things that I remembered. I guess as an extension (?) to the FF7 universe, it was a good stuff.

As it should be. The best way to look at it is that it's a very long, kick-ass epilogue to FFVII.

oh and BTW...

Has anyone gone back to watch the trailers? This movie has changed A LOT since it was first announced. The action in the early trailers was much more believable. I can't help thinking of what might have been.

I seem to remember hearing the disc 1 overworld music song in the movie, near the end of it?

Of course it's not going to be much cop in terms of story, but animation was beautiful and action was nice. Oh and Tifa was smoking.

The ability of the characters was pretty dumb jumping into space and everything but hell you watch it for the buzz rather than anything else. One scene was ripped right out of One Piece too (the anime)

The Still More Fighting piano variant is played during the Tifa vs. Loz fight, IIRC.

As for AC, it's an incredibly weak movie that only the most diehard of FFVII fanatics could love. The action is 2 fast/2 furious/2 hard 2 follow, the plot is an almost complete retread of VII's (I thought Cloud learned to live with Aeris' death at the end of the game...), and the "once great" characters are reduced to barely paper thin caricatures of their former selves -- the only one worth a damn anymore is Tifa. At least the music was good.

What do you mean, hard to follow. Are you slow?

Im not a huge FFVII fan, FFVIII was my favorite, but I enjoyed the movie plenty. Its actually better quality than that Narutard shit everyone watches and spooges over.

And what do you mean once great characters? FFVII wasnt that deep a story, and the characters weren't THAT well developed.
