FF8 question

I've got a question pertaining to Final Fantasy 8. I've never actually beaten the game. I've gotten to the Ultemecia fight before, but I'm always at only a level 50-ish. I really want to replay that game, though, and just trounce the shit out of it. I'm talking about getting high levels for everyone, top levels, max out my magic, etc. Is it worth it?

And if you do think I should, whats a good magic setup to go into that last boss fight with? I had ultima linked to my HP and I think holy linked to Strength... but Ultimecia does that move where she obliterates one of your magicks, and she, naturally, ousted my Ultima and left me with like 1200 HP. Needless to say, she made quick work of me everytime. Any tips for the game?
 
I'm pretty sure the monsters in FF8 were always levelling up with you. At least up to a point. I probably replayed Ultimecia 20 times or more. Blowing away Meteor and Ultima really hurt.
 
Actually the game is all about Aura later on. Just make sure to have enough Auras to keep Squall running and start hammering home Lionheart over and over again, that's all you need to do.
 
I seem to remember junctioning haste magic with speed stat (can that be done!?) but it was sooooo long ago. I would always use double magic and triple magic on a couple of chars, then have them cast flare and shit. Always made sure to keep everyone hasted too... Squall did so much melee damage and was getting in two or three attacks each turn thanks to haste and high speed stat. Still took me about 90 minutes to beat the whole boss battle!

Build levels in the forest with the marlboros, but just until you have enough stuff to make Squall's final weapon. Then junction junction Ultima to Squall's strength, Aura to HP, and then use aura in battle to trigger Lionheart. Provided she didn't nuke ultima or aura...

Cast Aura, 9999 x 21, game over, you win.
 
Just wander around the Island of Heaven/Hell and keep gathering magics (the points don't appear on the map, just walk around and keep hitting X and you'll find plenty) to junction, preferably until you're at 99 on everything.

Also experiment with equipping GFs, pretty much every stat for every party member can be covered with magic junctions if you find the right combinations to pair the GFs in.

Also, make sure you're doing the GF powerup during their attacks (hold select, mash square like a madman while there's no x over it). I didn't even know about them until halfway through the game.

Biggest mistake there, FLIP THAT SHIT AROUND! Ultima is a move about huge strength and power, THAT goes to your strength. Holy is about pureness and shit, THAT goes to your health. If you have equal amounts of both spells there will be a major difference in the amount of points you get. And as someone stated earlier, putting haste on your speed will decrease your wait to your next turn by a lot.

DO NOT, repeat, DO NOT waste your time leveling up all your character (though keep them reletively even if possible), this game isn't about leveling up. It's about junctioning the right shit. 100 Ultimas on strength, aura Squall and let him give 9999x20 damage with his Lionheart limit break.

EDIT - and against the final boss, some of your people have to have 9999 health. The one move she has does huge damage (just once though midway in the battle) and you need someone to survive it. By memory, the best magic to have on HP is flare.

And don't worry too much about her "remove your magic" move. Put a little of each magic in all your characters (cheap shit like 5 fires, 3 thunders) so that the chances of her blowing away something good is low. And if she does, deal with it.
 
Levels don't help as much as good abilities, junctions, and weapons. I had Ultima linked to attack and when Ultimecia erased it, I was reduced to 1/3 attack. Go to GameFaqs and look up how to get the Lionheart sword and abuse its limit break.
 
There's a card that can be refined to 99 Megalixirs. It's one you get automatically for defeating one of the GF:s too... just can't remember which. Diablos, Bahamut maybe? Anyway, from there just waste a Megalixir per turn while you keep Auraing Squall. Problem solved.

Bahamut, yeah. Usually you'd keep those for the Omega Weapon fight but even I didn't bother deal with that.
 
Yeap, don't level. In the beginning, card all the monsters. It's a slow process, but i thought it was quite fun doing it this way.

You'l build up a good amount of cards that you can turn into spells and other items. In conjunction with playing triple triads, you can junction some pretty strong spells to your characters (and even have Squall's 2nd highest weaspon) before you ever left the Garden island.

It makes the game REALLY easy though...
 
Triple Triad is fun. Just make sure you don't lose any good ones, and get the card refine gf ability (Qzualjaflkjsdlgahtyl has it) as soon as possible. My first play through, I think I artifically added an ability to that GF and Card-Refine never came up, oops :lol
 
i cant remember the exact formula but its something like this. you cant lose.



leard the ability card mod

modify the card "fat chocobo" to holy wars

modify the card *not sure, should be able to find what one in an faq, i think its gilgamesh* to any item than can then be redefined into 99x aura or 10x aura magic ect ect


start of the battle cast aura on everyone, then holy war (it makes everyone invincible for a while)


unleash as many limit breaks as u can

then when holy war runs out, cast aura on everyone again, and holy war, limit breaks,repeat.


works everytime :)



edit: as posted by someone above, use meltdown at the start of the battle. if IIRC it cuts her physicial attack defence in half. also dont cast aura while holy war'd (invincible), because while your invincible it also blocks magic.
 
If he's got 100 Ultima's on Squall and Zell (which are probably his main two physical hitters), meltdown is unnecessary since you're already doing 9999... but still a good tip if you didn't abuse the islands closest to heaven/hell.
 
Meltdown, Aura on Squall, Renzokuken.

First form down.

Meltodown, Renzokuken x2, Holy War, Aura on Squall, Renzokuken, Griever attacks, Renzokuken

Second form down.

Now just cast Meltdown, Aura, Renzokuken. And use all your best items - Holy War, Hero, Elixir, Mega-elixir, etc. After all, you won't use them later on, so why not use them now?
 
People actually DIE at Ultimecia?

Meltdown, Aura, Renzokuken. Have Rinoa cast regenerative spells. Trade the Bahamut card for 100 megalixers. She's dead in 10 minutes.

Megalixers?

I just sent my guys into battle with 10% health and afflicted with darkness and let Renzo and Armageddon Fist rip. Ulty almost never took a battle turn

If you don't have many GFs or good abilities, and you show up at Ultimecia, you can easily be screwed. I had to restart the whole game the first time I played because I only had like 4 GFs and not a lot of magic or anything. In other words I was fucked. (I really don't remember being that upset, though. I loved playing through FF8 the first time, and I think I had even more fun the second time.)
