FFIX My Problem.

Clever thread title, i know, I know...

Is there any RPG out for any current gen console that is on the same level of FFIX? I'm not usually an RPG gamer, but I loved FFIX, and I've yet to find a game that compares to how engrossing, lighthearted yet still engaging as this masterpiece was. I guess I could just play FFIX again, but a new experience would be swell. Any recommendations?

Don't turn this into a FF(insert number here) >>>>>>>>>>> FFIX thread please. :lol

Of the FF's I've sat down with, FFIX is the only one that kept my attention long enough to play all the way through. The characters were so likable, ViVi, Garnett, etc. Probably one of the most enjoyable experiences I've ever had with videogames in general. The other RPG being SoM on the SNES.

Recommendations people!

Hrm, I know what you're referring to actually. While I didn't like 9 the most, I still thought it was a great game. If I were searching for something with almost the same vibe to it, I'd say FFX-2....but I think a lot of folks would disagree there, they both had that free-floating leading up to quite serious after all approach down.

I will def check that out. I just hope it's still not $49.99. I've been meaning to check that game out anyway.

:lol Indeed

Yeah, one of the things I loved about FFIX is how it IMMEDIATELY captivated its audience from jump street. I mean, I felt like I was apart of the story as sooooon as the game loaded up.

I'm with you on FFIX being great, and no, there isn't any game in this generation that will give you the same type of experience. Trust me, I've tried to find one. It's very upsetting. The closest I've come in terms of likable characters and grand story is Xenosaga Ep. I, but the setting is entirely different and if you trust the more vocal people on this board, it's also utter crap. I disagree, and so recommend you try it even though the series may never see a decent ending now. It's cheap, too.

Edit: And yeah, I guess I'll second FFX-2 as a game that might float your proverbial boat.

No offense .. but someone who thinks FFIX is the greatest RPG is going to be hard to figure out what you like.

I think you will be "chasing the feeling" through many more RPGs. Then one day, one will grab you like FFIX did. You just need to play them all. Search the bargain bins. You can get alot of PS1 rpgs for 15 dollars or less.

As far as a game recommendation, I can't think of one -- I liked FFIX quite a bit too, and I really can't remember another RPG that felt like it. I really enjoyed Paper Mario 2, but that's pretty different. If you're talking about games with cartoonish style... maybe Tales? Baten Kaitos?

Actually it’s funny that you mention that, Xenosaga was the first games that came to my mind when I made this thread. I don't care that people think it's crap. A lot of haters hate on FFIX, yet I still think it's the best in the series. Xenosaga seemed to generate the same overall feel from the reviews and movies I've watched in the past. I'll pick this up first since it is indeed the least expensive.

I know exactly what you mean, I've been chasing the feeling since beating FFIX years ago. Argh...hopefully Xenosaga, or FF-2 will fill the void.

Let us know what you think. If nothing else, it'll spawn a great flame thread :)

I've been chasing it as well, and only found it in Xenosaga on current consoles, so maybe you will too.

If you haven't played FFX yet, may want to do that first before FFX-2.

I still think Shaodw Hearts Covenant best fit your descriptions. It contains alot of light hearted moments and characters, juxtaposed next to a very dark setting and story. The story is both engrossing and epic. There are big ass titties in this too:).

Damn I didn't think I'd get that many recs, I'll check that out too...

So far:

Xenosaga
Shadow Hearts Covenant
FFX
FFX-2
SoA

I'll check out the first two, first. Too bad I gave my ps2 away to a family member. Damn my generosity. I might just pick up a slim factor PS2.

BTW, I also LOVED Legend of Legaia (sp) on the PSX. Was that considered to be a horrible game? Haha, I LOVED it.

EDIT: Put the original Parasite Eve on my LOVED list as well.

I agree.

FFIX had good gameplay. While some may complain about the character models, I much prefer them to the flaming alternative.

This generation has been very lacking in RPGS. One of the reasons I play PC games now mostly.

I liked FFIX and absolutely hated XenoSaga and FFX-2. Take that as you will.

SoAL is awesome. That's the enhanced GCN port/upgrade of the DC original.

Let me get this straight: you love FFIX, you haven't played FFX, and your looking for an rpg to play that captures the (FF)IX feel?

I think the answer is pretty straight forward. Go with FFX. While a few people strongly dislike the game, most will agree it's a very good FF game which has that 'fast paced can't put it down' feel that many FF games have.

If that's not your thing, I second the recommendations on Shadow Hearts 2.

Well, I played the demo, and wasn't really feeling what I saw so far, so I skipped out on it... I'mma pick up SH2 tho.

I read the first post, and I clicked "Find in this Page" and I searched for "Grandia".

Nothing.

What is wrong with this picture?

Seriously though. Find Grandia. It isn't as nice looking as FF IX, and the music is of a different variety (but in my opinion, just as good, if not better, than FF IX. The battle system is top notch, the quest is loooooong, but well worth it, and the highlight of the game is definitely the characters and their interactions with each other.

I'd definitely say that if you dug FF IX, especially if it was in large part due to it's light-hearted characters, then Grandia will make you happy.

I second the suggestion of Grandia, though I don't feel it would be my first choice, like I'm overlooking another RPG I enjoyed as much as IX.

You rock though, JeffDowns, I've been trying to find a nice way to sum up why I enjoyed IX over all of the post-SNES FFs, and you helped quite a bit. :P I don't know though, FFIX is a really unique game from my viewpoint, so many here are just listing games that are only related by one area, or are just claimed to be "better". I've played a lot of them, without the same feeling.

I think Grandia comes pretty close though, though I'll be honest and say that I wasn't as captivated to finish it as I was with IX, so you may have issues with story progressions as well. There are some others I really want to try though after they got some mentions (Shadow Hearts 2).

Anyways, if I can come up with that game I'm forgetting right now I'll post it, but I am so blank at the moment.

Oh, since we're on a Grandia trip...

You shouldn't play Grandia because it's like FFIX. It's not, in any way, because I forced myself to play through FFIX over a year's timespan and I dreaded almost every moment of it. Grandia, though, is a title that you should play just because it's an awesome RPG. I could never play most RPGs after playing it.

The best jrpg this generation (and second best of all time, imo, after CT) is Skies of Arcadia: Legends. Don't worry about the dated Dreamcast graphics and the slow airship battles - the game is great and Vyse is a very similar character to the guy with the tale from FFIX. No Squall/Cloud angsty bullshit.

Skies of Arcadia Legends is lighthearted in nature and has some good characters. I liked it better than FFIX. Tales of Symphonia is a possibility, but its best and most lighthearted characters don't come into the picture right away.

so i cant come in and criticize FFIX? cause i can do it if i was allowed. guess it's not that kind of thread. i'll say this though. it was the most "fun" of all the three psx FF's (hell,it had more side-quests than FFVII) but engaging from beginnnig to end? erm...... i dont know.....
gotta love the airships though.....

This man seems to have a thing for worlds full of mist. Suggestions? Superman 64 and Turok, maybe? Tail of the Sun?

I considered Wild ARMs and Legend of Legaia to be "B" games, as in B movies. They both seemed to have little originality to them, but put together enough components I enjoyed to be worthwhile early cheap plays once I got my PlayStation. There is a Legaia sequel on PS2; GameRankings has it averaging 70.7% to its predecessors' 76.4.

Grandia (I, not II which was rather typical) and Tales of Symphonia both have the charming cast and lighthearted adventure over a darker story.

I have only played Skies of Arcadia, not the cube Legends, but if the encounter rate is significantly lowered and the challenge increased, as many have said, it might be a decent recommendation too. I spent most of my in-battle time in the original (most of the game) reading novels and tapping the A button repeatedly. Still, it didn't feel much like FFIX to me, despite the fun characters and light story.

Star Ocean 2 and the Breath of Fire games have the multispecies cast, although I find myself liking the SNES and PSX installments of BoF less and less as time passes. II was great, but it's rather dated now.

Tales of Symphonia, SoA:L, and Phantom Brave/Disgaea would all fall under the "light hearted but awesome" category.

Actually, really consider both Phantom Brave and Disgaea. They would be right up your alley.
