FFVII Remake: No Locations From The Original Game Will Be Cut (Nomura)

“There won’t be any locations from the original game cut in the remake,” Nomura said. “However, due to the structure of remake being multiple games, there will be slight change in the order of places you visit. But no location will be cut.

“We know some fans are worried that because it’s going to be finished in 3 games, some are worried things might get cut or shortened. But nothing will be cut or shortened.”

Added the full list of notes to the OP, from Gematsu:

Much more detail here:
•(Regarding why it is called Rebirth rather than Remake 2…) Both Remake and Rebirth have a similar meaning of 'being newly reborn.' Also, if we called it Remake 2, it might give the impression there will be a 3, 4, 5, and so on… as well as that 2 only exists because of 1. This also means that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth can be enjoyed sufficiently on its own.

•The reason for the delay in announcing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was because we were not sure whether it would be a two-part work or trilogy.

•Usually when it comes to the Final Fantasy series, only the core members are retained after the completion of a game, while most of the other staff move over to other teams. However, since the Final Fantasy Remake project was decided to be released in multiple parts from the start, the same team was able to start work on the sequel while maintaining their teamwork, know-how, and momentum, so development has been extremely fast. However, due to the large amount of resources required, there's no time for rest and things are always moving at full speed. The fundamental parts are complete and we're currently in the mass production stage. Development is going well.

•We've already begun work on areas such as the plot and scenario for the third title.

•Just as we created Midgar so that fans of the original Final Fantasy VII can appreciate it, we're taking care to develop Rebirth as not to ruin the image that fans have of the original. For that reason, the volume is quite massive.

•We hear the concerns of fans asking 'Can the story really be told in a trilogy?' and 'Will it be a trimmed down / digest version?,' but it will not be a digest.

•As for whether the game will be open-world or not, that will be announced with the next information release.

•The general systems from Final Fantasy VII Remake will carry over.

•The scene in which Cloud and Sephiroth are walking together in the trailer is a Cloud flashback scene.

•The main characters' 3D models haven't changed. However, some characters have been adjusted, such as Yuffie's model, which we touched up from Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade.

•The focal point of the story hasn't been changed. As for the new mysteries that differ from the original Final Fantasy VII, players of the original will be able to enjoy the game in a new way. The challenge we tackled for this project was how to include those new mysteries without deviating from the original.

•Regarding game progression, there will be some changes. If while you're playing you think 'Was this cut?,' it's because the structure of the story has changed a bit due to the nature of it being a trilogy. Although the order in which you visit some places may change, our policy is essentially not to cut anything.

•It's exclusive to PlayStation 5 because of the graphical quality, of course, as well as SSD access speed. Since the adventure unfolds in a vast world after the escape from Midgar, loading stress is an extreme bottleneck. We felt we needed the specifications of PlayStation 5 to overcome that and travel the world comfortably.

The original has so many memorable locations and I'm probably most excited to see:

1. Wutai
2. Junon
3. Gold Saucer
4. Cosmo Canyon
5. Nibelheim

In other words.... they've got a lot of work to do.

Part 2 will greatly benefit from having so much of the technical and project groundwork ready from part 1, as well as the gameplay systems and visual style all in place. It first began production in 2019 before part 1 released. Pre-production probably since even before then.

Part 3 has already began development too.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
They kept the Honeybee Inn, were people really worried locations would be cut?
Yes, because this happened BEFORE defeating fate. Fate (aka OG game & storyline) has been dealt with and now Nomura and co. can do whatever the fuck they want.

Also, imagine still believing in Nomuras words in 2022. Ah, the denial of still being in your youths.

I don't keep up with this kind of thing, at all... but is there a list of examples of things he's said that have been walked back over the course of production and haven't been true?

Because considering the kind of game FF7R is, I think trying to include/recreate all locations from FF7 in just 2 more games sounds impossible.

As a person who only played 7 remake, I have no idea how there can be more o this and how was all of that just 5 hours of original game :p

I don’t. I’m pretty sure the assets are ready for a long time now. 🤷🏻‍♂️ That’s what people are not getting here.

I mean I get that, but even if you wanted to have the biggest rage boner in the world about the games, why would they not at least visit the same locations at some point? It would take more effort to design new areas than to just adapt old ones.

Cool but will everyone from the original be playable, too? I heard a rumor that Cid may be turned into a weapons upgrade guy like in KH instead of a playable character.

You know what’ll happen? The game will have the same locations and beats as the original, with some few additions and tweaks to the story and people will still shit on “Nomura shenanigans”.
Because the point is to hate.

I loved the remake but still not fond of Nomura's involvement. Just not a fan of his needlessly convoluted style of writing.

They will all be playable by Part 3 for sure, even that rumor was just suggesting Cid may not be until Part 3. They ain't gonna do us dirty.

Still gonna be skeptical.... If Midgard took up a whole game I don't know how they're going to fit the rest over two unless they rush through certain areas
They said areas will be visited in a different order, so I'd guess some of them may be moved to part 3.

Outside of Junon and perhaps Golden Saucer, they would only need to design small towns, with wild areas or linear dungeons inbetween.

No Silksong? = Delivering the pain.
Golden saucer mini games in part 2, chocobo breeding in part 3 is my guess for side content.

Everything after Midgar is so good, so I hope they put the effort in there with all the awesome locations and story beats.

And a good soundtrack

No locations will be cut especially since the game is primarily on rails anyway. I'm curious how they are going to open up to the overworld after the party leaves Midgar. That's where the true test for these devs is going to be. If they pull off a Witcher 3/BotW I'll be impressed.

I don't see why they can't do it. I guess it becomes can they bring the world of Gaia to life?

Can someone remind me, literally haven't played FF7 since the PSX days - was Wutai completely optional in the original game or was it just a matter of some of the content being missable if you didn't have Yuffie? I just find it weird how they've done Yuffie in Remake, is Vincent getting the same treatment in Rebirth since they were both optional party members?

I can imagine the game being open world if it's next gen only. They have a lot of places to fit in and the 3rd game has to be more focused on the new shit they're doing.

I will genuinely be happy if this comes to be true. Golden Saucer and the Weapons fights are the two things I'm most excited to see in the remakes.
I'm extremely excited/curious how they are going to handle Emerald Weapon. I don't expect we'll be free fighting underwater unless we have some sort of suit like Samus has in Metroid for breathing and free movement. If we do get to traverse the underwater in a submarine in an almost pitch black environment it'll be fucking epic when we see Emerald Weapon for the first time.

How do you think it's going to be handled?

It won’t be cut from the game, just that it’ll take long and will be DLC packs. Each location will be a cool $49.99. Bet

I'm guessing they'll change the fight to a platform above the water with a countdown clock to a nuke or something like that. As much as I'd love an underwater battle, I don't think it's possible to do it without a severe clash in styles. Like going from a realistic type approach currently to "lol they're just holding their breath underwater". I also doubt they'd make swimming battle animations for just a single fight. Who knows though, that's why I'm excited to see. I also don't know how they'll make any Weapon fights where we're not just slashing at their toes for 10 minutes. That'd be boring as hell.

Wait, so this is not an actual remake?

I think they said awhile ago that the places, things, events from the original will be there (or something like that) I think the one thing they'll change is make the optional things mandatory, like Wutai.
