FFX vs BoF:DQ

I can't decide which I should play (first?). On one hand I hear they are both really mediocre, and on the other I'm too broke to go get a real game like Dark Cloud 2 or something. Oh I've also got FFX-2 if that's somehow better.

Basically my argument has proceeded as: BoF looks kinda neat being all cel-shaded and whatever, and a promise of partial nudity somewhere along the way; but FFX is supposed to have some atrocious VA, and I'd feel deprived not experiencing it. Also I'd never get to know the (joy?) of FFX-2.

Very hard choice between the two. I like both personally..but for a unique experience I would go for BoF: DQ. It might feel akward at first (how the gameplay plays out) but you do get used to it and its very fun.

FFX has an emotional aspect to it. If you like Final Fantasy then you have to play this game. It has ALOT of subquests but they can only be done near the end of the game. That being said, the game feels very linear, so get read for that.

I personally would choose BoF: DQ.

I'd go with bof. Its shorter and actually brings some interesting elements to the old rpg formula. Besides, the voice acting in FFX isn't laughably bad but it is cringe inducing.

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter. Hardly mediocre, but the weak need not apply... which are probably the people you've been talking to. ;)

FFX is an autopiloted, occasionally memorable JRPG-by-numbers; Dragon Quarter is one of the best games of the generation.

So I guess you should probably go for FFX.

Dude, the guy I borrowed it from owns FFX-2. And it was in his box when I got it.

Both are excellent games IMO. FFX is easy to get into and will last you 50-80 hours; great storytelling etc. Everything you've come to expect from a Final Fantasy RPG. BOF is beautiful, but has a style of its own, is much more concise, and will have you start over numerous times. You're looking at 50+ hours if you want to get anywhere; I'd say this is the harder game of the two. Want my advice? Play both! If you like FF7-9, you'll probably adore X (although not X-2); if you want "something else", play BOF : D Q. Stay away from X-2 until you have finished X.

Nice troll. Try again on a Monday, it might work then.

I must have missed something, but ok.

I played a bit of BoF already, just past rescuing the little girl. It seems fun but at the same time really frustrating. Already juggling inventory and barely an hour in. I think I'm gonna put this up and go with FFX first, something I can just turn off my brain and cast pretty spells and shit.

DQ is hardly beautiful - one of my main complaints with the game is its general ugliness and bland dungeon design. (eye of the beholder, I suppose...)

That said, as a *game*, DQ stomps all over FF:X. Great use of a turn-based non-random battle system (one of the best), high challenge level, and pretty-decent storytelling.

The massive linearity of FF:X drove me nuts, and the story and characters didn't much draw me in either. A good number of the quests are so obscure that there isn't a chance in hell you'd be able to figure them out without a FAQ, which is just bad game design. I quite liked the fighting though, and there are some decent bosses. Definitely wins the "pretty spell effects" contest with DQ...

Ok I played like 8 hours of FFX and the game still hasn't bothered to explain what the hell is going on. This is just bad story telling.

Reason for bump: When is this laughing scene? I've encountered quite a few terrible VA laughing scenes and am curious if there's even more joy to be found.

Your just not paying attention, and you've missed vital story points.

You'll know.
