FFXI 360 version (including all expansions)

They're all lining up to make one pants-wettingly game-packed day.

No one will buy this (360).

How much did M$ pay for this to be on their console?

FFXI 360 = ugly graphics with insanely small text

sad but true. extremely disappointed by the lack of upgrade to the 360 version.

Hasn't the whole FF Online thing been a failure pretty much? With the HD required for play on the PS2, I didn't think it would set the world a blaze. The game(s) are hardly ever mentioned.

PS2 version not so much, PC version did decently in the US up until WOW and the Japanese version got high numbers iirc.

I finally managed to close all my MMO accounts.. but damn.

Sign me the hell up:

Pretty much. Not many people care about FFXI anymore after the release of WoW.

MS should have taken the money they gave Square to get FFXI on 360 and gave it to Blizzard instead to get WoW on 360.

Err, FFXI is still immensely popular (although dropping off in the states due to various reasons), it just doesn't get publicity like WoW does.

So true. Knowing M$, they'll secure that deal the moment the game becomes irrelevant.

QFT.

FFXI > WoW! Come on now! :p

Immensely popular, eh?

How many people are subscribed?
Compare that to WoW, EQ, EQ2, etc.

FFXI is a failure. I thought everyone knew and accepted that.

Numbers please.
I find it hard to believe.

Of course, EQ and EQ2 totally dropped out when WoW came along.

Too bad there's no way to chart out total subscribers for each month, or even year.
(Unless someone has the data)

Last I checked it had more subscribers than EQ and EQ2.
Yeah, I remember a chart a while ago with many different MMO's and their number of subcribers over time and it showed FFXI's number had been very stable and even growing a bit since the release of WoW.

FFXI is also very profitable for SE, definitely a success for them.

technically a failure is described as a service that is not profitable.

FFXI is profitable, and therefore successful. It might not be the biggest game on the net, but it is making money and not going anywhere any time soon.

And technically, while blizzard does have a tendency to toot their own horns so to speak, they do have 5.5 MILLION PLAYERS! I mean it's not like they are Sony here releasing that they were the best selling system for a given month under certain conditions or something. Blizz pretty much only release press releases nowadays on the every half-million :lol

How much does a subscription cost (or is it free?)

And by failure I meant it got no where near the attention / numbers Squeenix wanted out of an FF game. I'm sure they're making some money off of it, butthat's like saying the PSP isn't a failure in Japan.
While it's making money, it's getting it's ass kicked by the competition.

The reality didn't meet the potential or expectations.

FFXI is by no means a failure.
It was released what, 4 years ago in Japan? It still remains very popular there.

And are you talking about total subscribers or current?

Subscription is like $12.99 pm IIRC

So it's a distant 4th.

Not exactly a success.
Not exactly a failure.

I never heard about that jump it had in the second half of 2003.

Still. The FF name didn't do as much as was expected. I'm sure there are SE execs cursing WoW.

Can't wait, definitely going to get my copy the day of release, the new jobs alone make me much more excited than when Promathia came out. At least I'll feel more comfortable knowing there will be more Corsairs seeking day one than Blue Mages. By the time this expansion is out my SMN will definitely be 60+ and thus, other than WHM, I'll have all the "mage" jobs above 60 and I'll be bored as hell. :(

Anyone that thinks SE (well, just Square at the time I suppose) expected to get traditional FF-offline levels of sales with FFXI must think the producers of Brokeback Mountain expected it to do Narnia levels of business.

I believe it is (or at least was not too long ago) the MMO with the highest subscription rate behind WoW and Lineage.

You're out of your mind. Game has been a great success for SE. It continues to be a profitable product for them month to month. The FF name did it's part plenty. Stop talking please. =x

FFXI is still pretty populated on my server. The new expansion is long overdo, but I'm more excited to see what the next big MMORPG Square is cooking up will be...

Firstly, I'm real excited about this expansion. I have a Mithra THF on Caitsith that will definitely go Corsair.

Secondly, I don't think MS paid SE anything to get FFXI on the X360.

With the release of the PStwo, console subscription growth for the game was dead. Sure the hardcores would track down a used PS2, but a normal person who wanted to play the PS2 version of FFXI couldn't due to the lack of HDD support.

If SE couldn't find another option, the console userbase would be static and never have any chance for growth.

The X360 port was probably a no brainer for them. MS isn't going to up and drop HD support from the system and SE could quickly port the PC code to the X360. They get a relatively easy port out of it, in addition to continued subscription growth from console players.

lets take low end estimates and say an average of 300,000 users per month since launch.

Game has been out for 3 years, at around $12 a month...

300,000 x 12 = $3.6 million PER MONTH in revenue
$3.6 million x 12 = $43 million PER YEAR in revenue
$43 million x lifetime = $129.6 million in revenue.

and that's without sales of the software itself, the expansions , the sh!t loads of books etc etc...

I'm pretty sure FFXI is a huge success for Square.

if you really want to scare yourself ... think about WoW!

5.5 million subs x $14.99 per month = $77 mill revenue per month (!)
Blizzard are close to 1 BILLION USD per year in revenue from ONE game.

Yes, anyone who says it's a failure has no clue what they're talking about. If it was a failure, it wouldn't still be up and running, there wouldn't be another expansion, and SE would not care about the console subscription base growing at all and thus there would be no X360 version.

People who are saying FFXI isn't a success are bloody oblivious.

Before WoW, everyone was like "Everquest has so many people addicted to it". Everyone recognized it as the most popular MMORPG out there cause they didn't know about the Koreans or this game.

This game surpassed Everquest. It's still quite popular. Only games that passed it is a Korean MMORPG which has been the result of gang-styled beatings in internet cafe's and the MMORPG anyone can get into (WoW, the user friendly mmorpg).

It's an online version, so it was never going to achieve the same numbers. The fact that it's got over 500,000 subscribers is damned impressive. It's only got WoW ahead of it in the Western world.

While it's making money, it's getting it's ass kicked by the competition.
First off, it's been making about 2/3 of all of Square Enix's income the past year. Second it's not getting its ass kicked by anything other than WoW, and that didn't actually remove many players in a financial sense. Many people who moved to WoW still kept their FFXI characters paid for, as it's quite a big investment to just throw it all away.

The reality didn't meet the potential or expectations.
For someone who didn't even know the game had a fee you seem to know an awful lot about Square's business practices.

Geez, people are stupid for saying "OMG, FFXI is a failure. It sucks. WoW can't beat it. Its not good." Oh grow up.

Its making money, its doing fine. It shows no signs of slowing down. Square-Enix is properly handling the game well, and I have no complaints. I am enjoying the game and thats all there is to it. If the game was created the way it was, then so shall it be.

He already mentioned PSP is a failure right after Sony reported financial results. :)
