UPDATE 2/11:

Two FFXII commercials:

Bit of a translation of the menu stuff from someone at ffxii.net:

- Licenses can be freely adquired and distributed, for example: (whitish colour) they influence the evolution of actions/behaviours/conducts, and perhaps for other strange, as yet unknown, purposes.
-As far as the webmaster can say, the "License Board" will serve to insert "actions", although as of yet he has no idea of the structure of how the board syatem works.

Owwww!
I get up, and nothin' gets me down
You got it tough, I've seen the toughest souls around
And I know, baby, just how you feel
You got to roll with the punches and get to what's real

Ah, can't ya see me standin' here
I got my back against the record machine
I ain't the worst that you've seen
Ah, can't ya see what I mean?

Ah, might as well jump. Jump!
Might as well jump
Go ahead an' jump. Jump!
Go ahead and jump

Ow-oh! Hey, you! Who said that? Baby, how you been?
You say you don't know, you won't know until you begin

So can't ya see me standing here
I got my back against the record machine
I ain't the worst that you've seen
Ah, can't ya see what I mean?

Ah, might as well jump. Jump!
Go ahead and jump
Might as well jump. Jump!
Go ahead and jump
Jump!

(Guitar Solo)

Might as well jump. Jump!
Go ahead and jump
Get it in, jump. Jump!
Go ahead and jump
Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!

...just bring the fucking game out already.

What the fuck. What is this board thing? Sphere Grid 2.0?

I'm not sure. It does look like it branches out from a central point, but who knows if you'll have to move in a linear fashion through it.

I hope this stuff is clarified soon, I want to start thinking about all my ability/Gambit setups and strats. :D

How about the more obvious first guess: A Chess-like mini-game

jeeze...some of you guys need to stop getting my hopes up like that

It's the "license" system. When you buy new magic it seems that you can't just use them right away and need to use this new system to setup everything. It also says that a license is necessary for weapons and tools. Bizarre...

That's what the system is, though. It's not a chess game or anything. :P

I knew about this License System 2 days ago, but because no one provided a scan I decided to wait before speculating on it. Good thing too because the information I had was significantly more limited than what's actually in the scan. :D

Basically it's like this, there's a License Board for each character, and you acquire both EXP and LP in battles. LP is usually given in lower quantities than EXP. Using LP you can acquire Licenses. It is currently not known if you acquire licenses right off the board (likely) or you have to buy licenses with LP seperately and place them on the board. Anyway this license system is what determines what kind of character you have.

Different characters will VERY LIKELY start out with certain licenses already acquired, since Fran is said to be a weapon master, she can probably use any weapon in the game readily. This License System is pretty much the backbone of the character development system in FFXII. Acquiring Licenses that lean towards a certain job class will be similar to developing that character towards a certain FFXI/FFT-type Job. With LP being rather limited, it would definitely fit with what Matsuno said about how "You can train a character to be good at EVERYTHING, but it would probably take over 100 hours."

Where are you seeing all that info? I don't see it on the scan. I see that you can't simply buy magic without a license. You have to aquire the proper license in order to use magic or techniques. For weapons and armor, if you don't buy a license, you'll find yourself unable to equipment what you've just purchased. Depending on the type of license you purchase, you'll be able to equip different items (equipping is dependant upon the licenses, basically).

Is there more to the scan or was there talk about it somewhere else?

The existance of LP was found waaay back when Japanese players played the shit out of all the demos available. They existed since the start but were never explained. There's been tons of speculation about what they were and what the fucking Moogle meant by "Even if you buy Cura, if you don't have the license it's useless!" and so on. I'm just putting the facts that we know together since the License Board system is now revealed. It's clear that you use License Points to acquire the Licenses that end up on the License Board. :D

Ah, that explains. I kinda ignored all of the hoopla around the demo as I didn't have a copy to try for myself.

You're probably quite right, then.

So
Soon

A little over a month to go!

Licenses eh? Hopefully this "board" is nothing like the Sphere Grid. I'm sure Matsuno has come up with something much more interesting. maybe even challenging.

It sounds more like what FFT used more than anything, except you have restrictions on how you learn skills (no saving your points to jump straight to Curaja and Jump +8, for example)

Is it me or does this new char, "Worsura", look exactly like Balflear?

It's Vassler. He was a soldier with Basch in the prologue of the game set 3 years before you play as Vaan. He protects Ashe now.

Wasn't he supposed to be
Vaan's brother
? Maybe I'm getting him confused with someone else now, it's been awhile since that E3 demo. :p

That was
Reks (the brother)
, right?

OK, I just watched the E3 video again. Vassler and Basch find Reks and they all go into the castle. Got it. :D

All they need now is to lay the smack down and localize this as fast as KHII...but without Disney bugging 'em,ithey'll probably take their sweet time

Fixed. :D

Man, Alexander O. Smith's had literally years to work on his translation... this better get localized quickly!

Based on the demo, impressions, info. released so far... would this game be too much for a FF n00b?

Considering there's no single player FF like this at all, I think it's safe to say that it doesn't matter how many FFs you've played. :D

If you've played FFXI, it seems you'll have some advantages, at least ;)

New system sounds promising -- I like systems that let you mix up what kinds of abilities your characters have :) -- although I'd like to know more about what distinguishes it from, say, the Sphere Grid or a job system.

But, yeah, enough with the magazine articles, just hurry up and get the game out so we don't have to keep speculating :)

Based on the demo you can't pull anything, so I doubt it matters if you played any previous FF.

Would he translate while the game is still in development? Or would he start work when Square have wrapped up development of the Japanese version?

If he hasn't started yet we might get the typical 5 month wait. (more for me in PAL land)

Undoubtedly. I'm sure he was behind the translations of the E3 2K4 demo and the demo packaged with DQVIII.

When is that FFXII World Preview book out? Can`t wait to see some scans of that.

March 2nd I think....a few weeks before the game is released.

I cant wait to see it either. There will be a total media blowout. We finally get a better look at FFXII's game world. This book is apparantly 112 pages long so this leads me to believe that Ivalice is going to be fucking huge.

112 pages is really small for a book like this, according to those in the know.

*shrug* I just want the license/Gambit system to be explained in detail.

Erm, 112 pages is pretty normal for a mag like this. It's not going to be any indication of how big or small the game world in FFXII is either. It's just a promotional mag like the one V-Jump did for FFIX. It'll feature a bunch of pages with pics of the characters and stuff, all material we've seen before, then more pages covering the battle system, lists of attacks and spells you'll see in the first 2 hours of the game, etc. There'll likely be some illustrations and design sketches to make fans happy, and maybe an interview or two. Don't expect anything we won't already have seen in mags by then.

The real indicator of how much shit is in the game would be the Ultimanias. :D
