Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look our resident flag-waving expert, Horseress!
What fighting games do you currently play, what is your all time favourite and why?
Not playing games that much since I've been working a lot lately, but when I have a chance, I play UNiEL (still don't understand all the mechanics yet, but I'm getting there) and USFIV.
My all time favourite has to be the all time most hated fighter of almost everyone else: CROSS FUCKING TEKKEN! I mean, it has flaws, the scenarios could be shorter and the gem system could've been done differently, but on top of that, if a great footsie game, and I love how the Tekken characters play, mixing strings into chains and canceling into specials and stuff...it's so good. I can understand why people hate it, but I love it.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? MMy favourite is the parry system. It's so simple, yet so smart! A good read can change the flow of a match entirely. And a special mention to HD combos from KOFXIII, that, for me, it's the perfect comeback mechanic. You can do a shit ton of damage with it, but it's HARD to do the full HD combo consistently.
My least favourite is an easy question: TAC's. It's so fucking stupid! I mean, I remember when I first played MvC3 a month after it's release and I was loving to press up to chance my character mid-combo and keep the ABC chain, but after understanding the game more deeply I understood that a low risk/fucking high reward mechanic will never do good to a fighter.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?My least favourite is an easy question: TAC's. It's so fucking stupid! Back in the 90's some video renting stores had a few stations with SNES's and MegaDrive's that we could play for a buck an hour. Me and my brother played MKII there all the time, until we got a SNES! Duuude, it was a dream, then we got SFII (champions edition IIRC) and I loved it as well, but all the cool kids in the neighbourhood were playing the brand new UMK3.
The problem was back then the struggle was real. I obviously didn't had money to buy a game, and my parents thought those games were too real for their 12 year old kid, so I had to grind in my friend's house. Eventually I got really good at it, then another friend called me out: "my father is the best, I doubt you could ever beat him!".
So that Sunday I went to his house and meet his father: a 30-ish yo guy who probably had drugs that morning. Then I proceed to beat his ass with my Striker! Then I had to run as fast as I could 'cause that guy was MAD at me.
I mostly play fighters, but I also love to play FIFA, racing games and classic platformers.

Bison. He's the dictator, he's Raul Julia, he's awesome! I love his movelist, it's very unique. You'll never be low tier to me baby
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
I try to be as offensive as I can be, putting the opponent in situations were if he don't make the right choice he'll be there getting mauled for some time.
I mostly play online, only have one fried that loves fighters as much as I do.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?I mostly play online, only have one fried that loves fighters as much as I do.
I can understand mid-game the opponent's habits, what they usually do in certain situations. But still, I have a hard time reacting accordantly.
My biggest weakness is definitely being able to do hard combos on training mode and almost never in actual matches! Holy shit that's so frustrating.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career? My biggest weakness is definitely being able to do hard combos on training mode and almost never in actual matches! Holy shit that's so frustrating.
Well, I have a close friend who started me in competitive fighting games, he was the one who told me to search for "daigo parry" on Kazaa in 2005 to watch the moment that changed the way I look at games forever, and he was also the one who linked me to LevelUp's justin.tv channel to watch the very first WNF with MvC3, back in February 2011. And he was my demon for the longest time, could never beat him. When AE arrived, I picked E. Ryu and started to grind everyday, playing online and training mode for hours. Then I started to beat him sometimes. A few months later I was kicking his ass! In both SFIV and SFxT. This feeling of finally beating my demon was my best moment.
The worst was going 0-2 in the first tournament I entered. And that close friend I mentioned above also went 0-2, so I was like holy shit, my demon is as ass as me! Big turn off for me, still a cool experience tho.
What do you want from future fighting games? The worst was going 0-2 in the first tournament I entered. And that close friend I mentioned above also went 0-2, so I was like holy shit, my demon is as ass as me! Big turn off for me, still a cool experience tho.
I want better tutorials and better training modes. I know developers are already stepping it up on training modes (the UNiEL's one is awesome), but tutorials...not so much.
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
TheChits. If he done it already, then sixteen-bit.
