Final Fantasy VI expansion/remake: Potential future?

Tabris (I think) and I had a huge discussion about it. He didn't like it so much, I loved it.

Seems like every time I argue, it's over FFVI. :/

First third of the World of Ruin was great.

I actually thought Celes and Terra's early story were the strongest aspects of the game.

They ended up ruining Terra's character though. The Kefka moments were great at the end, and the character montage was neat, but the ending fell flat.

why was the world of ruin so bad Shouta? I honestly didn't mind it.

It was a large number of things they didn't bother doing. For example, they literally reduced your team members to a generic one liner and killed most of their personalities. They didn't bother actually having a plot which was a massive change from the first half of the game. Then there's the meaningless sidequests and events throughout the World of Ruin that contribute almost nothing to the game. The only real bright spot could be the individual character episodes dealing with a little bit of each of your party members but even then, most of them are botched because they don't bother revealing anything about the characters, they just involve them.

The World of Ruin isn't bad in concept, they just didn't putting effort into doing it. If you want a good example of something like the World of Ruin and how it should've been done in a basic sense, FFX-2 does it right.

Bingo. After a very strong, concentrated (albeit linear) first half of FFVI, the sloppy non-linearity of the second half was just an uncomfortable contrast, IMO.
It was worth it for the end-game, though. Kefka's Tower, the Guardian battles, the final battle, the ending... all fantastic!

The first half of the game is extremely boring in replays; the 2nd half allows you to go in the order of characters and stuff that you want, giving something new to try out or go for. 2nd half of the game will always be preferred for me to play (go go sketch bug save at the Floating Continent).

I've got your back, Duderz! :)

I actually felt like the world of ruin had you solving different characters' personal problems and then getting them to rejoin you to go fight Kefka, which was more interesting to me than the world of balance and the typical JRPG story of "ragtag group of rebels fights evil imperial army." but I can see how some people wouldn't like the world of ruin. also like Red Scarlet says, it's fun on replays to go gather characters in different orders.

and in general, with regard to the whole ultima is as bad as KOTR... both are way over the top for damage, but if you equip someone with the right espers as they level up you can get 9999 damage with either a physical attack, special attack, or a basic attack spell that they can spam without an economizer/golden hairpin. FF6's esper system is arguably more broken than FF7's materia system, but I think it's more fun because you have to equip the proper espers for each character as you level them up. oh, and the Paladin shield definitely teaches Ultima. on my FF3 US cart I can pretty much recreate the sketch glitch safely in the world of ruin every time, and when I do it gives me 255 paladin shields (and a bunch of other crazy stuff that I wind up selling and maxing out my gold on) and they all teach ultima at a x1 rate. the most overpowered thing in the game though is giving Sabin a +2 strength esper until he hits about 75-80 strength or even up to 100. at that point doing his most basic blitz attack will cause 9999 damage. the best weapons in the game though, IMO, are the atma weapon and valiant knife due to being hp proportional (even at full hp, if locke has 9999 max hp he'll do 9999 damage with the valiant knife). but yeah... I have a really disgustingly overpowered save file on my FF3 cart where I have characters leveled up to the 70s or higher using the strength or magic esper (depending upon character) and odin for +1 speed. it's insanity because I give them something with auto-haste on it like the marvel shoes, and they literally get 2-3 turns for every 1 the enemy has. Shadow can pretty much solo any fight in kefka's tower with that setup and the offering.

I am one of those that enjoyed the World of Ruin. The only thing I can see people complaining about would be the non-linearity of it. Killed off most of their personalities? If anything, the second half of the game fleshed out most of them even more:

-Celes (well, the first bit was all hers).
-Terra finds a place where she can fit in.
-Locke finally finds peace with Rachel.
-Setzer's backstory with Daryl and the Falcon (with one of the best and underrated tunes of the game).
-Sabin finds his master alive and closes out the Figaro backstory with Gerad (HA!).
-Gau finds his father, Strago gets his monster.
-Shadow's dream sequences.
-Cyan coming to terms with the death of his family.

The plot was weak? I didn't really think so. You are free to take on Kefka at any time, so it's not really a big deal. Sidequests were very rewarding (espers, secret characters, kickass weapons and armor).

And did you just compare this game to FFX-2?
