Final Fantasy XII new video ~~~

For that purpose I'd rather just stay on a battle screen and fight until I decide I'm done. ;)

Maybe have the game set a level for me. You should be level 35 here, fight six battles and the encounter rate automatically rebalances.

Yeah that's what I meant about disliking being taken away from the field screen more than I dislike random battles.

What I can't really dislike is the rpgs that put the enemies on the field map, but the map is made up of such narrow paths and the enemies aggro so aggressively that you end up fighting every battle anyway and you end up loading up a battle screen. That strikes me as completely pointless. Also it adds extra frustration to leveling because you constantly have to run in and out of the area to get the enemies to respawn.

The only rpg that I can think of at the moment that has intelligently approached that set up is Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter, which let you set traps and attack the enemy first to let you gain an adavantage in the ensuing battle. I would love to see a Dragon Quarter sequel, or another game, take up that idea and just eliminate the battle screen altogether.

ok just finished reading it and i have some questions

1) Why would the King's lead general kill him since he was pissed that he betrayed his kingdom to save his king from being known as a traitor and a prisoner?Wouldn't letting him being captured be just as good? If its a spoiler just tell me before the answer.

The king sold his country out, he wasn't going to be captured. Selling his country out surely gave him immunity.

2) Who invaded Dalmasca and why?

Um, duckroll answered this question in his original post. Archadia invaded Dalmasca because it is strategically placed between Archadia and Rosalia (another country/citystate that Archadia wanted to invade and take over). The king sold Dalmasca out so the Archadian army could easily invade and conquer it.

3) What happened to Ashe's wife?

Ashe is a girl. Her husband is likely killed in the original invasion.

Also is there some popular fan site for this game yet?

www.finalfantasy12.org - It's in japanese but you can find translations of the info there on the Gamefaqs FFXII board.

PS. Reilly sucks, death to random battles! :D

thanks, but if he sold his country out, why would they attack it and kill the people in it? also he said that the general killed the king since he sold out his country and so he(the king) wasnt captured by the empire, but why would he want to save the king from being captured if he hated him and how could he be captured if he was immune to them?

1. Because obviously the Dalmascans (the army) weren't going to give up without a fight. The Archadians want only to occupy, not persuade the Dalmascan people to join them.

2. the king WAS NOT going to be "captured". He made a bargain with the Archadians: he gives them his city, they spare his life/let him be/etc. Basch (the general in question) killed him because he was going to get away scot-free.

ok thanks a lot

makes more sence now. Cant wait for the game now that i see the story. hope it comes to america this summer. or better yet, i hope they surprise us with a may launch in US(my bday)

I've never understood why rpgs with random battles don't let players set the encounter rate. It's not really about difficulty, especially with the save points that also heal you totally. It's more about the player choosing to prioritise certain parts of the game at different times. When I'm exploring, particularly retracing my steps through an area where the enemies are pathetically weak I want minimal to no encounters. When I want to level up then I want encounters so frequent that they pratically come one after the other.

Sounds like your problem isn't so much with random, unavoidable or separately presented battles as with the weak balance and annoying load times common in recent RPGs. I agree that if battles are going to be pointless (often due to overabundance of healing items/powers) and slow, you ought to be able to skip them, but better still would be quick battles that actually wear you down like they should.
