Yeah that's what I meant about disliking being taken away from the field screen more than I dislike random battles.
What I can't really dislike is the rpgs that put the enemies on the field map, but the map is made up of such narrow paths and the enemies aggro so aggressively that you end up fighting every battle anyway and you end up loading up a battle screen. That strikes me as completely pointless. Also it adds extra frustration to leveling because you constantly have to run in and out of the area to get the enemies to respawn.
The only rpg that I can think of at the moment that has intelligently approached that set up is Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter, which let you set traps and attack the enemy first to let you gain an adavantage in the ensuing battle. I would love to see a Dragon Quarter sequel, or another game, take up that idea and just eliminate the battle screen altogether.
