Huh, elemental fists don't have a cost.

Wait, none of the MP costs are listed.

yea probably, i couldnt find it anywhere or else it'll be pretty OP to have a 10% damage bump indefinitely. add that with 3x stacking of Grease Lighting (15% damage increase). then again, you'll probably be dead before you can use it long enough

Mage''s Ballad
Bard Lv.30
Refreshes MP of all nearby party members while lowering own damage dealt by 20%. MP is drained while singing. Refresh effect is lost if party members move out of hearing distance, and ends upon reuse. Cannot be used with other songs.
Damn.

Archer wasn't bad. Only got up to level 11 or so, but definitely see that the skills are having nice synergy with each other. Poison an enemy, use Straight Arrow for the critical chance buff, Heavy Arrow till the poison and critical chances run out and then use when enemy at 20% HP skill for more damage.

Does help that you have auto attack and can basically run around when you are using a skill to try and avoid damage (even though I was never too sure if I managed to do that).

Sure I probably looked silly running circles around enemies but I had fun with it.

I ran circles around mobs too with my Archer, though at the end I mostly stopped doing that and just moved behind/at the side when they started doing their cast time abilities (and since I was lagging a bit, I managed to eat so many special abilities even while being behind a mob lol).

If they're keeping it the same as before, Elemental Fists for monk drain HP per hit. I hope that they're changing it and it looks like it though.

They drained MP over time in the original. Nothing has MP costs listed since MP costs scale so I wonder if it's just not listed because of that.

Paladin has similar stances so it might just be a generic buff to choose from as you get higher in level.

Did anyone try out archer? Curious how the class is.

I got my Archer to 18 and it was pretty straight forward. I did have to kite in 2 boss fights which freaked me out coming from FFXI Ranger where you were never alone. I am really curious how Bard is going to play in groups. Like a gimped DD that buffs i'm going to assume. lol

So I took my Pugilist to level 15... Does the combat ever become more then just spamming 1, 2, 3, repeat and occasional 4 if I evade? TP never is a problem for actions, very little to actually manage.

Oh, and the map is atrocious.

Well, I can't remember what was available at level 15. However at 20 I would...

1. Pop Haymaker when it procs
2. Apply Touch of Death DOT
3. Straight shot damage buff from Arc
4. Bootshine > Twin Sankes > Snap Punch - Applies Twin Snakes dmg buff and 1st stack of Greased Lightning
5. Bootshine > True Strike > Snap Punch - Applies second stack of Greased Lightning
6. Blow Offensve CDs
7. Bootshine > True Strike
8. Alternate between 1-7 depending on what needs to be refresh

In groups you will lose Haymaker, but the huge increase in positional dmg you get on your WS more than make up for it.
You're managing 1 debuff, 3 buffs, and dancing from the back/flank of a mob depending which attack your doing -- I def enjoyed it. You can get away with just mashing 1-2-3, but I don't think thats the most efficient (or fun) way to play a PUG.

Where can I do this?
You won't be able to until launch:
Collector's Edition Digital Upgrade Service
The Collector's Edition digital upgrade offers customers the ability to upgrade their standard FFXIV account to Collector's Edition status via the “FFXIV Service Center” website that is scheduled to be opened at the launch of official service, which then grants the in-game bonus items included with the Collector's Edition. Customers in possession of the Collector's Edition for either version 1.0 or A Realm Reborn will receive these Collector's Edition items without needing to purchase the upgrade.
* Characters that have already been created will be able to receive the items.

I'm downloading the PS3 beta client right now, but am curious about 3 things.

1- is the first beta weekend over already?
2 If I click 'cancel' in the download manager, do I resume from where I stopped?
3- how long does the beta last?

1. Yes. Times for the next one haven't been announced. If you go here:

http://forum.square-enix.com/ARR-Test/forum.php

Under "Please Read Before Beta Test" is where they'll post the testing periods.
2. I've heard that you can't so try to avoid stopping it.
3. The Beta test will last up until a few days before the Pre-Order early access period which will be a week or so before launch (AUG 27th) or so people are assuming.
Phase 3 will have 4 tests, the second and third'll be weekend tests like the first and the fourth will be longer once they've confirmed stability.

...I'd think we should look into making a FAQ, N.A.

Changing weapons changes class right? So if I changed to the axe to level marauder stuff would I still be part of the lancer guild? Can I even buy/get a axe? I wasn't really paying attention to other weapons.

Yes, but only after you complete the Level 10 class quest for whichever class you start with.

And once you get through the Level 10 class quest, the guilds will give you your Level 1 weapon for free when you join them.

Yeah, you can join every guild; it's really just quest lines to get weapons, abilities, and some other content. You have to unlock the ability to change first, though, by completing the level 10 quest for your starting class. After that, you can go to the guild of the class you want to switch to and talk to the Receptionist for the quest to get the level one weapon for that class (which is always walk ten steps to the Guildmaster.)

Question for J-Gaffers: Amazon.jp has the game for a mere ¥2600 -- much cheaper than the $39.00 US price, so I'm tempted to cancel my US order (which will take longer and cost more to get here) if it'll be possible to play the game in English with a Japanese disc.

Will we be able to select our language as smoothly and effortlessly as we now can in the beta? In the beta there's a dropdown menu where you can choose from Japanese, English, German, and French, no matter which PSN store you got the game from.

Quick question chaps:

My PC won't run this as high as I'd like (but I'm a sucker for MMOs so I'm probably going to pick it up anyway) but if I sub to the PC version will I be able to carry on when the PS4 version comes out or is it a separate process? Do PS3/4/PC share servers? And finally does the PS4 support KB+M?

Edit

Also - I can't remember my login for FFXIV - how do I go about doing this whole legacy thing to get into the beta? I still have my discs and whatnot.

No worries; if you come across it again, please post it here as I'd love to see it.
Don't mean to butt in but:

Q: In real-life, I'm left-handed. Any chance we will be able to change our characters to a left-handed character?
A: Players may find this surprising, but it would have a big impact on cutscenes if players could choose to be left or right handed, because character blocking and camera position would have to be adjusted. Since we will have cutscenes in the class and job quests, as well as the main scenario, this would ultimately result in poorer quality overall. There would also be memory problems. I know it would add more realism to the game, but unfortunately adventurers have to be right handed.

You will can play in English, but to register the code, you will need a JP SE account, you can't apply that code to a non jp account.

Have any of the XIV sites started updating with the new info, like all the abilities, traits, etc.?

I'm currently putting together screenshots I took of all the classes abilities and traits that I can post when I'm done if people want. Just missing the quest skills.

Data mined stuff would be better I think though.

I doubt there is enough hp or time on normal mobs to do all that jazz when soloing.

That not going to get you anywhere in real content, though.

And the closest thing to a "talent system" would be putting together a different build of abilities from multiple classes.

Without seeing all of the classes and everything it's hard to know how many different viable builds there are at this point, but there was some variety in 1.x.

There are a lot of ability bonuses on gear, so combined with stats you can focus to your preferences more.

For example, on CNJ I was more interested in maxing out my Enhancing spells, so I was more focused on VIT than MND.

If it's not going to get you anywhere, and it's the only thing CNJ can cast for a bit(looking ahead it doesn't look like they get any other damaging spells)....

Ideally I'm shooting for white mage anyway, but you still need to get to 30 as a CNJ here. There's a Rock upgrade a lil further in, but yeah. I mean, I leveled a priest in original WoW melee'ing, then doing Holy Fire/Smite spam, so it's not that dissimilar I guess.

In that case, I'm sold -- my SE account is already Japan-based.

But does that mean that my subscription has to be Japan/yen-based also?

(This is my first time with any kind of MMO/subscription game; go easy!)

I got a beta key from Dreamhack, pm me for the code - first person gets it.

Yes, I think that the PC, PS3, and PS4 are sharing servers and they've said that 1 account can switch between playing on PC and PS3. I'm assuming that this will also be the case for PS4, but we may have to buy the disc it comes on, I dunno.

As for question 2, can't help you Ms. Palmer.

A timely butt-in, indeed!

Now, Yoshi-P, that excuse is just weak. We're going to be interacting with our characters for dozens of hours, if not hundreds. You'd make cutscenes that are a few minutes long that important even if they came at the cost of detracting from the quality of the other 99% of our time with FFXIV? I'd gladly concede my character switching hands just in the cutscenes if that's what had to happen. Movie scenes and photographs get flipped all the time and nobody really gets bothered by it.

I guess I might as well ask now: which is the least "handed" of the jobs/classes? I'll throw fireballs with both hands rather than swing a sword with the wrong one.

Allright guys, no more pms please. Beta key is taken!

so... someone data mined the beta clients and some items are out

http://xivdb.com/?search/!filters/1/IklURU1TOklTSV9IQU5EUyI=

from xivpad

Guess I have to rethink Dragoon if these go live. All the jumps have crazy long cooldowns (except the first which just has a normal long cooldown), and the normal attack combo does more damage of all except the 5 minute cool down one.

On the other hand Warrior looks amazing. Some good looking attacks on short cooldowns to balance out the really long cooldowns. Guess you gotta wait on the "combo points" to generate though, but still looking good.

Edit: A little question, does it ever get hard to level the other classes over the lack of low level quests or are there several starting zones?(I know there are 2)

Only 3 starting zones so for your 4th time starting as a level 1, you'll have to do it without the quests. Through a combination of hunting log, leves and grinding.

What was meant above when people were saying classes aren't "worth it" for solo play? Can you play a character without taking any class..?

The lack of somatotypes to choose from for each race is also completely unacceptable. I want to make a character that has my exact bodytype. And why can't I choose a posture? Yoshi-P is an asshole for not including posture selection. Maybe I like to slouch, and that's something I want my avatar to do as well.

I'm not going to play any class that doesn't slightly slouch exactly like I do.

.......

Seriously dude, are you for real?
