Flash just doesn't function properly AT ALL. And I've uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox and flashplayer.

I'm reverting back to IE just to open websites that use flash.

This is bullshit. BULLSHIT!

some sites i go to flash works fine, some others the flash is the wrong resolution and even other times it'll just lock up firefox altogether (example: www.soundclick.com)

I don't have any problems with IE, except not having tabbed windows, which I heard they're implementing. So therefore, I have no reason to use firefox. I have it and i've tried it, but out of habit, I just end up using IE anyways.

Do you install flash from firefox itself (built in downloader/installer)?

Anyone find Firefox more unstable in the newest builds? I find the bugger craps out (crashes) a couple times a day now.. although it usually takes a media rich site to do it. It is a little frustrating that there is still content out there where you must use IE to view it properly too..

Yes! It's happened to me 4 times since I upgraded to 1.0.5

I like Firefox but every release seems to be a little bit more unstable than the last one

During that last month firefox is a memory bitch. It used to take no more than 60~ MB tops, but now it starts as low as 10MB and goes up (pretty fast) to 200+ MB and than if I don't close firefox the computer locks.
If only IE had tabs and the gread extentions ff has :(

Do you have any extensions installed? Most problems with Firefox are because of extensions, sometimes one single extension can make FF unstable. A clean extension-less Firefox is extremly stable (on a stable OS).

IE crashes on me from time to time, also this porn site I like to visit does'nt load correctly on IE. But for some odd reason I like uisng IE cause I'm more familiar with it.

This is definitely true, even with the "approved" downloads on the FF extension sites. FF is a bit quirky sometimes, and it seems to be getting worse with every new version.

On a semi-related note, i'm surprised how well FF is running on this Celeron 800MHz machine with Centos Linux 4 installed. The screen doesn't update as well as my Athlon XP 1700 and i'm sure it won't handle imbedded video as well, but for web browsing it's pretty solid.

Opera's probably the best browser out there for mid level users... people just one the logical functionality that browsers should include, without the hassle of finding out about plugins and what not.

It provides tabbed browsing, mouse gestures, extremely fast rendering, and extras like fine magnifiction per tab. Also extremely customisable interface that also looks pretty decent.

It's not without its problems though, with some websites failing to render some areas properly, such as in GameFAQs; if you search for a game, an ad will appear over the first 5 choices, making the item unselectable/unclickable. Similar formating problems exist in sites like IGN and MSN... but they're not all that frequent, and generally can be worked around or ignored. At worst, just fire up IE to browse those pages...

but for day to day surfing, I don't think anything really beats Opera, with its mouse gestures, fast rendering, handy features, extensive bookmarking functions (I have my book marks arranged in subcategories on the personal bar, which is kinda like having a favorites button for each type of category that you choose), tabbing, transfer functions...
all included out of the box. Even things like logical arrangement of menu items... such as when I'm clicking on a picture to save it; the link to set picture as desktop isn't located directly below, save as, which can cause you to inadvertantly change your desktop quite often.

Flash renders properly on Opera as well for the most part... the only ones that seem to have problems would be embedded .mov files from Apple's quicktime trailers.

Try pressing the "Clean Up" button in that Downloads window. I've found that Firefox likes to keep everything listed there in memory, which would lead to the process hogging your RAM and causing the system to thrash.

When the hell was Firefox 1.05 released? I've never been told to update, and forcing the browser to search for software updates doesn't recognize it either.

I've been having a problem where even if I close out all firefox windows, it continues running in the task manager. If I then try to shutdown windows, I get a "Please wait... closing firefox.exe" poppup, and even if I end task or whatever the PC won't shutdown. The only way I can get it to shutdown after this is to close all instances of SVCHOST.exe

lol, 1.0.6 is coming so soon? :lol v1.0.5 must have been really wrong then! I've noticed loads of problems with it so far

This week (Tuesday iirc)

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

tbh don't bother with it. Wait for 1.0.6 which is apparently coming this week

Yeah, I guess I'll wait for 1.06, although to be honest, I've also been experiencing some odd crashing issues with Firefox, so I'm a bit unnerved that the rest of you having problems are using 1.05. Every once in a while the whole browser just closes, no warnings, no troubleshooting, nothing. Just up and disappears.

I wonder if Mozilla turned off the auto-update thing then, if 1.05 was problematic and another update was already necessary.

maxthon does it better for free.

Maybe this is the ultimate test in the open-source theory... it only works well up to a point...
Depends on the application and specific project. Firefox isn't the first widely used open source application, you know.

Yeah, I've had an older version of Mozilla until switching to Firefox right when 1.0.5 came out, but it also crashes numerous times a day for me, I really hope .6 is more stable =/

Or it only doesn't work well for you.

Here's a thought on the Flash problem...If you've uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled and killed your profile and started fresh, maybe the problem isn't Firefox, it's just manifesting in Firefox. If the solution for one person was a Windows reload, than this could be a registry issue with the Flash plugin, or something more obscure. Since the interface for plug-ins is different between IE and Mozilla based browsers so it's totally possible for Flash to have a problem and it not effect IE.

I have the opposite problem at the office. No matter how many times I've uninstalled / reinstalled Flash, IE won't load it (sites tell me I need to install the plug in). Firefox on the other hand works.

Had the same problem, and it never worked again. That is until I reformatted my hard drive and and erased everything. Then upon reinstallation, all the plug ins worked
