Saw this movie yesterday, and I loved it. The more I think about it, the more I love it. They way they portray Neil Armstrong and the events, makes me really feel for him. It's such a stark contrast with the grandeur of what is being accomplished. But it elevates it even more. It got to me.
Anyone else seen this? It's an amazing space movie.

The entire landing scene is pure poetry.

What type of movie is it? Like a documentary style or something like apollo 13?

It's a movie like Apollo 13, but way more "contemplative". It's been a while since I saw Apollo 13. I really liked that one, when it came out.

First Man is probably too slow for some people and Neil Armstrong is portrayed as a stoic, very closed off man, but it made him feel more human to me. His character and his 'silence' make the space scenes way more powerful.

It’s a biopic of Neil Armstrong played by Ryan Gosling. Dramatized, based on the actual events.

I think they lean in too hard on the idea of Armstrong being on the spectrum, maybe because that’s the only way Ryan Gosling can act. I don’t see much indication that this was the case in the actual man. He was reserved and cool under pressure but not unemotional—big difference. You can watch Armstrong, the documentary, for a better look at who he was as a person.

Setting all of that aside, it’s a well-made film.

I liked the film, but the best way to interpret Armstrong as the old school super private suppressed emotion man. He was all business all the time.

There is a great doc on the moon landing that was released a couple of years ago. That is great too.

Apollo 11 (2019) is a must-watch, yeah. Outstanding documentary and beautifully restored footage.

I didn't think it was old school, movie wise. Usually this type of trait is stereotypically combined with aggression and abuse.

I know plenty of men from his era that did not share their feelings and were all business but were not abusive. My dad for one. My grandfather, and my uncles that fought in WW2. Rarely showed emotion but were loving and supportive to me.

I think it is more of a Hollywood trope, that repressed emotions equal abuse, but it isn't a rule.
