Yeah, i've never played any pokemon games, but a friend of mine made me borrow Ruby, and I don't think its too bad

But since Fire Red is a remake of the orignal red should I play that one first?

Having played both, I'd say it doesn't really matter. FireRed has wireless trading, which is awesome, but you could play them in either order.

Doesn't really matter, I think you can better start with Ruby since Fire Red is a litte bit bigger.

It really does matter which version you pick unless you you care about the rate of which certain Pokemon show up and the rarity levels and so forth.
