FMV Recommendations

One of the genres I enjoy is the interactive movie choice based FMV games. They remind me of the choose your own adventure books I loved to read as a kid.

"Played" quite a few of the Wales Interactive games (the bunker, dr decker, late shift etc) and of course Night Trap back on Sega CD.

Looking for some game/studio/publisher recommendations on PS5 PC or Switch.

Phantasmagoria

Gabriel Knight series.

There's that one X Files FMV game which is supposed to be canon iirc

It's a bit different to the Wales Interactive games that you mentioned, but I really enjoyed Immortality.

There's also 428 Shibuya Scramble and The Centennial Case, which are both great, but play more like visual novels.

I can't really name any recent ones, but there is a shit ton from the 90s on steam/gog. Phantasmagoria 2 for example.

I recently started playing "Killing Time." It's an FPS port of an old 3D0 game. The port was handled by Night Dive. It's not strictly an FMV game and there isn't any "choose your own adventure" aspect, but it has many FMV moments kind of transplanted into an FPS. They also used digitized actors as sprites. It's kind of a trip. You might want to give it a shot.

Are there versions of this game that can run on current hardware? A digital version maybe? I have the original on PC CDROM and it requires a slow cdrom. It plays the track as a movie and when your car hit the boost it runs the movie at fast forward as fast as your CDROM can go. Sounds fun reading it but it was unplayable with a 24X CDrom drive.

or

The most recent I played are:

and:

I enjoyed both, give them a look to see if they might catch your interest.

I love the Tex Murphy games. Mean Streets was one of my favorite PC games back in the day even if the car driving stuff was janky.

Mean Streets isn't FMV, though OP. Don't get that one if you're looking for FMV.
Yeah they're well worth a go :)

I really need to rebuy Overseer on GOG, my Steam copy runs like absolute junk.

  1. Late Shift
  2. Bloodshore
  3. The Complex
  4. Not For Broadcast
FMV was once believed to be the future of gaming from some in the business before 3D visuals really kicked in during the mid nineties. From what I've read anyway.

Check out Wales Interactive on Steam since they have a lot of FMV games published. I think the ones I liked the most from them were Late Shift and The Complex.

Edit: I see that you've already touched on Wales Interactive FMVs, but I'll leave the post as is anyway.

This thread is shorter than I expected it to be. Anyway Fox Hunt and Cyberia are pretty good, just from the top of my head.

Revenge Of the Ninja - Mega CD

Rebel Assault - Mega CD

Night Trap - Mega CD

Surgical Strike - Mega CD (an overlooked gem)

Time Gal - Mega CD

Can second Phantasmagoria and the X-Files FMV game. Both excellent.
Can third those two and legendary Harvester

X-Files PS1 was truly amazing to me. No idea why really. But I loved every second of it.

Also 'The Dame was loaded' and it is on GOG/Steam as well

Can't think of any outside what's been mentioned would something like blade runner count? It's more point and click but had tons for fmv. Maybe dragons lair?
