JW Rinzler on Lucasfilm, Disney and the Space Age

Best-selling author and former Lucasfilm Executive Editor JW Rinzler joins us to talk about working with George Lucas, leaving Lucasfilm, his thoughts on the Disney era and more!

This is a very interesting interview with RW Rinzler, someone who worked closely alongside George Lucas for 15 years at Lucasfilm and was responsible for writing a number of official Making Of books. It gives a lot of insight into the making of the SW prequel trilogy and the series as a whole.

Rinzler was working on a book for Force Awakens but it was cancelled, and he left soon afterwards due to a lack of interest in the new material. He wrote about his experiences in a blog, which got him into a little bit of trouble, but he has a lot of cool stories to tell about the last days of Lucas.

This is a primary source. Essential listening for anyone interested in Lucas’s creative process.

• He wasn’t able to speak much with Ewan McGreggor or Natalie Portman but spent an entire day with Hayden Christiansen on the set of ROTS
• Thought Lucas would sell to Sony at one point, since the Japanese are big fans of SW
• Main reason Lucas sold was the Marin County land debacle. He was trying to start a new facility for the ST and was shut down by Cali politics.
• Lucas hates Hollywood
• When asked about fan criticism he says Lucas used to pull up parody videos of YouTube and show everyone cos he loved the jokes
• Sale to Disney took him by surprise, he thought it wouldn’t happen for another decade

Maybe at least then we'd have got more awesome Star Wars games.
