After that abortion of a race track two weeks ago, we move to one of the coolest courses on earth. We've got full wet qualifying here. These are the first session times.

First qualifying times from Spa

1 SCHUMACHER Ferrari 1m53.755s
2 BARRICHELLO Ferrari 1m54.913s
3 RAIKKONEN McLaren 1m55.371s
4 MASSA Sauber 1m56.057s
5 FISICHELLA Sauber 1m56.068s
6 MONTOYA Williams 1m56.842s
7 COULTHARD McLaren 1m56.994s
8 ALONSO Renault 1m58.242s
9 TRULLI Renault 1m58.606s
10 BUTTON BAR 1m58.837s
11 SATO BAR 1m58.929s
12 PIZZONIA Williams 1m59.100s
13 WEBBER Jaguar 1m59.437s
14 PANTANO Jordan 1m59.442s
15 KLIEN Jaguar 1m59.917s
16 HEIDFELD Jordan 2m00.166s
17 BAUMGARTNER Minardi 2m01.195s
18 PANIS Toyota 2m01.472s
19 BRUNI Minardi 2m03.226s
20 ZONTA Toyota no time

As if Michael needed another advantage eh? He only needs two more points than Rubes this race, and the driver's title is his.

Trulli got pole, but the renault's were very lucky with the rain at the time of their qualifying.
Barrichello and Schumacher were going faster in worse conditions.

I've heard it'll be bone dry, but who knows?

Belgian Grand Prix grid

1 TRULLI Renault 1m56.232s
2 M.SCHUMACHER Ferrari 1m56.304s
3 ALONSO Renault 1m56.686s
4 COULTHARD McLaren 1m57.990s
5 FISICHELLA Sauber 1m58.040s
6 BARRICHELLO Ferrari 1m58.175s
7 WEBBER Jaguar 1m58.729s
8 MASSA Sauber 1m59.008s
9 PANIS Toyota 1m59.552s
10 RAIKKONEN McLaren 1m59.635s
11 MONTOYA Williams 1m59.681s
12 BUTTON BAR 2m00.237s
13 KLIEN Jaguar 2m01.246s
14 PIZZONIA Williams 2m01.447s
15 SATO BAR 2m01.813s
16 HEIDFELD Jordan 2m02.645s
17 BRUNI Minardi 2m02.651s
18 BAUMGARTNER Minardi 2m03.303s
19 PANTANO Jordan 2m03.833s
20 ZONTA Toyota 2m03.895s

Should be a fun race...I'd expect Kimi, Juan and Jenson to look like demons trying to get into the top five. And with Reanult's usual fast start (plus his decision to use intermediates), Trulli could be gone before anyone else even hits the hairpin.

Zonta did pretty bad, beaten by the Minardis....
Should be intersting tomorrow, until the first pit stops where schumi will take the lead and win the WDC.

Michael will be 3rd into T1. You can't stop Alonso, you can only hope to contain. And he won't even be able to do that. ;) However, he will own them in straightline, and unless the Michs have the one-lap advantage again, he'll pass both of them going into Le Combes.

This is the day I had marked on my calendar since it was put back on the schedule. It's a damn crime that it was ever removed. The best venue on the year. :) I LOVE SPA!!! :D :D :D My favorite track, hands down. The camera views of this track are just so inspiring. I really wish we had the old qualifying session, b/c one lap is too few for such a gorgeous track. I hope tomorrow's race is wet. Michael will lap the field. :D He didn't look too pleased about losing a certain pole to weather. I think he'll want to exact his revenge by showing off. I think Rubens will be in P2 before the first set of stops too. I just don't think that 1s per lap advantage has disappeared at all this weekend. Ferrari is way ahead of the field this weekend. Not even close. PEACE.

EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot to say that it was a great lap by Trulli regardless of the weather. He showed Alonso the way today. And I bet if it rains tomorrow, Michael will wait for pit stops to pass DC this time. No repeats of 1998 this year.

I hope it's a wet track that dries over the race , Spa is awesome (Favorite track bar none.) but a wet race would spice things up nicely. (Remember Schumys tire management genius at Hockenhiem a few years ago where he had to cool his tires down through the puddles off the racing line?)

I agree with the drivers about the changes to the bus-stop exit, I don't see the point and they have all but neutered the exit now, sanitizing tracks has to stop. :/

Freeburn: Agreed. Chicanes will be the death of every good racing circuit out there. And to do a change like this without consulting the people who have to live with it was just assinine. But then again, it's the same geniuses who decided to reprofile Eau Rouge and turn it into a full-throttle speed bump. :( It used to be a challenge taking it flat out, something that seperated the men (MH, MS, JV) from the boys. But now it's unheard of to even lift through there. Oh well, it hasn't hurt the aura this track has. :) Two tracks I must drive before I die. Spa and the Nordschlief. :D PEACE.

Heh...and Monza comes up in two weeks, which has three or four places for drivers to pass (and that's without taking the width of the circuit into account). What a concept.

Oh yeah, the silly season marches on...the Button stuff is still up in the air, though they're hoping to resolve it by Monza. I can't see him not going to Williams though. I reckon the three leading drives to replace him are David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen (though stories surrounding him have cooled the last few weeks) and Jacques Villeneuve. Incidently he toured the Sauber factory last week, but they're leaning towards hiring a younger driver.

BTW, how many times do you think the commentators will refer to "The Pass" that Mika made on Mikey in 2000? I've got the over/under on both networks at a half dozen.

Moments away from the start...really hope Kimi can stay in this one, as his ability should enable him to pick some guys off and try to crack the top five. Plus it'll be fun to see...Lord knows the F1 circuit needs some fun racing to watch.

Wacky Races.... :D

I love Spa, with a passion, never a boring race. :)

:lol It's gotta suck doing all that work, only to crash out on like turn 3.

13 laps to go, as the cars trail the pace car. Kimi vs Michael. It's all gonna be about the tires for the first couple laps...which ones will get to race tempreture quicker. Needless to say I'm hoping the Michelin's will do the job.

This race has been incredible BTW...certainly the most action packed of the year, and probably the most action since Silverstone last year.

KIMI WINS!!! MY BOY!!! YES!!!

Wow...what a race. Some incredible performances today. Kimi was just fantastic from the opening lap when he made up like five positions (looked like he nudged one of the Saubers to do it, but no harm no foul). DC had two huge problems and still finished in the points. Rubes had to get his rear end replaced after the opening lap, and still finished third. And didn't Zonta start the race last? Yet he finishes in the points. Great stuff.

Congrats to Michael for claiming yet another driver's crown...hate the game all you want (and there's plenty to hate), but don't hate the player. I just wish Kimi had had a better car from the jump to battle him like he did last year.

Man...Kimi wins at Spa. I'm almost teary-eyed.

Million dollar garage.

Congrats Kimi!!! :) Mumbly Joe wins in grand style. He was untouchable on lap time today. Michael drove hard, but clearly was outclassed on this afternoon. I thought Kimi might have been 3-stopping, but that wasn't the case. He was just awesome, and the BStones were the clear tire of choice today since Sauber managed to grab 4-5. I think he just nailed the setup b/c he was doing things in the second sector that he shouldn't have been able to do. Anyway, great 2nd win for the Fin, McLaren actually took one this season before BAR. I would never have guessed.

Great 7th WDC for Michael. As he himself noted, it was a pretty lackluster way of clinching, but it'll have to do. He got outrun today. Where the hell did those amazing times from earlier this weekend go? The car was faster on Friday I think, and he stood no chance against Kimi. But 2nd isn't bad considering that abortion of a first lap, and the abysmal first stint he had. It looked like he had it in reverse. Should hopefully win 3 of the last 4. Rubens should win Brazil...I hope.

Great drive for Rubens to come from last to 3rd. He just can't buy a break, but his recovery drive was outstanding, although kinda low-key. Massa also drove well, putting a wheel to Monty. That was some balls going into Eau Rouge side-by-side. Wish he'd gotten a podium, but Rubens kinda deserved it more. Also a good job by Klein. His last stint was fast, and he was showing some of that aggression he showed in Bahrain earlier this year. Maybe a couple seasons from now he'll be ready for the big time. He's gotta get faster though. Zonta had a good run until his Toy let go. :( He's better than Da Matta IMO, so people should get off Toyota's case. Alonso would have been challenging for a win if his engine didn't start dropping fluid. He was the only guy running at Kimi's pace. Kimi and Alonso, that's why I rate them both as next best to Michael. They need cars that can compete on a regular basis.

I got a couple complaints. First of all, DC sucks donkey dick. If it's not team orders from McLaren  then I don't know what is. That muppet cost Michael the last chance at a win with that stupid move on Klein. Michael was finally catching Kimi, and then the safety car comes back out and the Michs were just too good on the restarts. Oh well, payback for Silverstone I guess. But it's funny how DC and Spa, I don't know what it is, but he's a friggin hazard here. No congrats from me for what was otherwise a good run. The race steward should have also red flagged and restarted the race. I think it was a mistake only running safety car when you have debris coming out of Eau Rouge and leading into the fastest section of the track. I don't think all Michelin failures are due to shoddy construction. Besides, some drivers got collected in one man's mistake. One red flag might have saved us all the safety cars. The FIA drops the ball again. I can't remember the last time we had a restart. Might have been 02.

Otherwise, the move of the race was from Juan going around Michael through Bus Stop. Very creative and daring. He has a lot of faith in Michael, no matter what he says. He always sticks it in there, no hesitation. Of course, he totally muffed it on Trulli, thus negating all the good stuff up to that point. Kimi also had a good move on Michael that the camera kinda missed. He set Michael up great going into La Source, you could totally see it coming. Nothing Micahel could really do except hope he could hold him off to Eau Rouge, but Kimi got a great run out of there. That first stint sucked hard. One time Ferrari's strategy backfired. PEACE.

Heh, anyone see that Irish Priest nut in the marathon today? The same coot that ran onto the track at Silverstone last year. It's ironic that he chose today to make his Olympic appearance, since today's Spa race was probably the best (certainly the most action packed) since that British GP.
