Forza Horizon developers Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios have revealed details of their upcoming Rally expansion pack, out December 18 on Xbox Live Marketplace for 1600 Microsoft Points ($20 USD). The add-on, in fact, goes well beyond the typical car pack. This one actually changes the game by adding co-drivers who shout rally calls, new stages, new online events, and yes, five new cars. Let's break them down:

New Stages

Forza Horizon Rally packs new point-to-point rally stages that span the game's fictional Colorado setting. The stages are "full of severe and sudden terrain changes, including steep banks, narrow tree-lined cuts, big bumps, jumps, drops and natural hazards like rocks and trees," says Horizon design director Ralph Fulton. "In addition, we've got more road surfaces than ever before, on-track vegetation with new physics properties, and new particle and sound effects."

New Cars

Yep, no racing game add-on would be complete without new rides, and Horizon Rally includes five -- all of which have close ties to rally racing. There's the '92 Celica pictured above, the 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII MR, the 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX STi, 1992 Ford Escort RS Cosworth, and 1982 Lancia 027 Stradale. Season Pass owners also get the 2003 Ford Focus SVT. And they're all upgradeable: "You can take the same rally upgrades that are featured in the cars that are packed in with the expansion pack and apply them to any car in your Forza Horizon garage," Fulton explains. "These upgrades include rally tires for improved grip on loose dirt and gravel, springs and dampers that raise and soften the suspension to maintain stability on the most sever off-road terrain, and rally transmissions that feature shorter gear ratios more suited to the quick accelerating nature of rally racing. I think these cross-game upgrades are a game-changer for Horizon – they allow you to upgrade any car you own into a dirt-eating machine for use in the Rally Expansion Pack stages."

Rally Calls

"It’s important for players to heed the warnings and instructions from their navigator," says Fulton. "Ignore a camber warning, for example, and you might find yourself off track completely." One examples a of rally call: "One hundred, easy right, into medium left. Care bumps." Translation: there's a right-hand corner 100 yards ahead you don't have to slow down much for, but it blends into a medium left turn that gets bumpy.

Online Features

It sounds like everyone should be happy in the online department: "We’ll have a new set of rally-themed Rivals events for players to explore, with new Rivals events being added each month," Fulton explains. "In addition, we’ll have two new rally-centric online playlists, one for rally beginners, and one for veterans who know their way around a rally stage."

Finally, Fulton sums up how the rally experience changes Forza Horizon in one sentence: "Rally driving has this strange and thrilling duality that makes the sport unique – you’re constantly focused on what’s happening right now in the car, while simultaneously being mindful of what’s coming next…even if you can’t see it."

pretty damn excited for this - but still a little unsure about how much truly new content there is... sounds like its just reusing roads from the full game (though resurfaced with new materials) to create new p2p stages, adding in a co-driver, and several cars. still, i'm a sucker and starving for anything rally, and horizon is a terrific game.

Wouldn't it be great if Forza Motorsport 5 has rally events?

i think horizon is to scratch that itch actually. i wouldnt expect it in mainline forza at all, and i'm ok with that. looking forward to forza horizon 2 :)

Yesss. Just finished the last of the single player events this week. I've been hoping for some new non-car pack DLC.

Is this game open world? I want a game as close to Need For Speed Underground as possible. I want to trick my (licensed) car and drive around a big, open world city. I want the tracks to have actual barriers so I can't drive way off the wrong way like in Burnout. I have never seen any media of this game or followed it.

Is this game at all like the racing game I described?

it is... but its much more grounded in reality. also, it borrows heavily from the forza games in its physics and handling, though is definitely slanted more towards the arcade side - still, its no NFS (thank god IMO).

If it can scratch that Rallisport Challenge itch I've had for years-so bought.

if you are ok with ignoring the dude-bro ness and off events, dirt 2 and 3 will satisfy that craving quite well. both can probably be found for dirt cheap (hah!) too

Looks awesome, but 1600 space bucks is quite a lot.

Think I'll reserve judgement until we find out how many stages or how this DLC is structured - if it's just an expensive track pack then that turns me off a bit.

for a good recent rally game WRC3 is the best one

unfortunately, its not region free and i cant play it :(

that said, dirt 2/3 (especially 3) handle VERY similar to RSC IMO. at the discounted price, both are entirely worth the price even if you utterly ignore all the other non-rally events (recommended). wrc 3 likely is good, it certainly looks good, but it doesnt seem to be in the RSC "style"

Cool! Dirt is one of my favorite racing series. Love to see how this turns out.

I'm worried for content. I hope they add a satisfying amount of content.

Nothing will top that epic rally sport tournament we had here when RS2 came out. Why no other game copied that set up is beyond me. But I agree Dirt 2 was and is a fantastic rally game.

This is probably the closest I'm going to come this gen to an actual rally game, so I'll definitely be buying. And no, Dirt does not scratch that itch.

Yea, I think the cars are a perfect blend of arcade and Forza. Basically a little more like PGR4 which is my favorite racing game ever, so needless to say, I like Horizon.

It's open world with a lot of great customization and some unique events, and it's a game you'll be pausing to take pictures in every 2 minutes thanks to the image quality. As a PC gamer mostly, I'm very impressed that they made the IQ and AA so important in Horizon and it shows.

I wish my friends got this game because I miss the PGR4 days...lol.

Btw, I like this game and I don't like Forza at all (but like GT5 for some reason lol) really so you don't have to like previous Forza games at all to enjoy this one since it's more of a sim-arcade hybrid. That's my honest answer at least.

I still don´t get it. Where are those Rally Tracks?
Did they expand the map?

pretty sure its all the same roads from the full game, just most with new surfaces and of course all are linked as separate p2p stages not found in the full game. the vids below illustrate this quite well and despite the environments being recycled to some extent, most areas look fresh. seems changing the surface meant adding ruts, banks, and crests too.

Hmmmm.... That´s absolutely not what I was expecting. So this adds nothing to the open world of this open world racing game?

I really expected more for 20 bucks.

Too bad I bought the season pass for this.

Are the physics more suited to controller play? I have the racing itch but have been putting off GT5 as I don't have a wheel setup with me currently.

Really want this but it's a little expensive. Got the game from the MS store for $15. Still I love the game so much, I've long ago finished every event and still load it up to drive around replaying events. Urgh, tough decision.
