August 16, 2005 - EA is stepping up its support of the PSP feature set with its second generation of handheld titles. Four games from EA will feature online play through 2005, allowing gamers to play other gamers on these games anywhere they can find a HotSpot wireless connection. At the same time, this seta standard that the company will have to meet (and exceed) in future releases.

Only two games can be named as infrastructure-enabled for online play at the moment -- those are Madden NFL 06 and FIFA Soccer 06. The other two titles will be named in the next few weeks. Each title will feature head-to-head online play for two gamers.

Development has not gotten to the point yet to state exactly what features will be supported in each game -- specifically, whether EA's cool "Owned" list will be tracked online instead of just in local play. However, gamers will get a chance to see online play in an EA title soon, as Madden is essentially ready for mastering on PSP and will release this September. In this title, ranking lists, EA Messenger and user leveling will be supported, and we expect similar features to be incorporated at least into the online EA Sports titles, if not elsewhere.

The gaming giant still has some work ahead to earn a rep as the leader of netplay on PSP -- even with four games bringing EA's total around that of Sony, that's still only part of EA's multiplayer PSP games going online this year. But with infrastructure support being one of the most heavily-demanded features for PSP gamers, support of this feature from a company as big and prolific as EA is good news for handheld players. Tests with the PSP titles have already been played online, and the developers claim lag-free gaming experiences on the handheld with what they've been able to play so far. We'll be hooking up ourselves online with EA's online games as soon as the games are ready for more in-depth play later this year.

Nintendo Wi-Fi has some competition

Poor PSP. It's doomed

Just different types of games better for each system. Sports games are going to be harder to realistically pull of on DS, where DS has the advantage in a lot of other genres. This is all considering the online play of course.

if SSX is online i'll buy it...

but i kinda doubt it since the console versions aren't.

The other 2 games are probably Marvel Nemesis and LOTR Tactics

Edit: Nevermind, NBA Live 06 PSP comes out this year. Thats sure to be one of them.

How many players can play online in PS2 Madden?

Two still, right?

It's EA's basic match-up system, brought to PSP. Unless you go server-based, how much can you expect in peer-to-peer with a handheld? I'm very curious to see how the DS online plans turn out...

Live was already confirmed actually. The 4th game is likely NFS Most Wanted or Battlefield 2 imo. Here's all the known online games so far....

01 ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin' Trails (SCEA)
02 FIFA Soccer 06 (Electronic Arts)
03 Gretzky NHL (SCEA)
04 Madden NFL 06 (Electronic Arts)
05 MLB (SCEA)
06 NBA (SCEA)
07 NBA Live 06 (Electronic Arts)
08 SOCOM US Navy SEALs: Fireteam Bravo (SCEA)
09 Twisted Metal: Head On (SCEA)
10 Untold Legends: Warrior's Code (Sony Online Entertainment)

11 new MMORPG (SCEI)
12 new MMORPG based off DC Comics (Sony Online Entertainment)

...I wonder when someone besides EA or Sony will release an online PSP game?

Off the top of my head, I know Mortal Kombat: Deception Unchained and Stacked will support online play.
