To sum it all, release a movie with a gazilion dollars marketing for the theatre, cash in the money, then make cheap sequels with B-list actors and sell them for 25 bucks. I guess it's a smart business strategy, and a good consumer decision, if you're mostly into crap.
Looking forward to the new Family Guy though.
After selling 1.5 million units of The Sandlot 2, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is tripling its 2006 DVD premiere output with Dr. Dolittle 3, Like Mike 2 and Behind Enemy Lines 2.
Fox also is funneling into DVD premiere development Sandlot 3 and sequels to teen horror flick Wrong Turn and sex comedy Bachelor Party. The three should bow this year or 2007.
Production budgets for all films average about $4 million each.
Since launching its DVD premiere division two years ago, Fox is starting to solidify its strategies for the genre. Led by chief operating officer Steve Bersch and VP production Tom Siegrist, the unit is gunning to deliver four to six live-action sequels in categories particularly strong on DVD, including broad comedy and horror.
Rivals such as Fox and Universal Studios Home Entertainment are actively looking for sequels of their own.
I think our philosophy is that its hard to get shelf space, Bersch said. So you have to come up with very strong properties that have a strong theatrical life and strong afterlife. This is where the fan base grows more fond of the release as time goes on.
Fox also is expected to push for another straight-to-disc Family Guy title. But Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story, which was crowned the No. 1 2005 DVD premiere title with $78.2 million in revenue, hails from creator Seth McFarlane and outside of Foxs DVD premiere unit supervision.
