From The New York Times:

Back to Batman

Frank Miller, an acclaimed comic book artist and writer who helped revolutionize the comics industry in 1986 with "The Dark Knight Returns," a grim vision of an elderly Bruce Wayne, is taking on Batman again. Mr. Miller has been announced as the writer of "All-Star Batman and Robin," which will be published by DC Comics in July as part of a new group of titles in which top artists and writers will create stories not bound by decades of continuity. (In this case, Batman's partner is Dick Grayson, the first and best-known Robin, not Tim Drake, the third boy in the role.) "All-Star Batman and Robin" will be illustrated by Jim Lee, a fan-favorite artist of Batman and Superman titles. Mr. Miller has another feather in his cap this spring: in April, Disney's Dimension Films will release "Sin City," the live-action version of his violent crime-noir comic book, starring Bruce Willis, Benicio Del Toro and Jessica Alba. GEORGE GENE GUSTINES

It's official. DC wins 2005.

Whoa, no Nightwing. Hmm.

One of the things I've liked about Batman recently is how there's Batman and then all these underlings that report to him through Oracle.

:O

!!! I'd almost want Miller's art, but it's become too caricature-ish over the years. And only if Lynn Varley used real paints. Anyway, I can't wait!

I thought Miller hated DC and would verbally attack fans if they brought up Batman at cons. Or am I thinking of someone else?

I will try not to get too excited for this. I haven't read a good Miller Batman book in a very long time. At the very least it should look awesome. I love Lee's Batman.

Don't let us down Frank!!!

So, what do you guys think this comic'll sell? 300K? 400K? Dare I say... 500K?

Sheeeeeeeeit. Recent big sellers (Jim Lee wrapping up his Batman run, Jim Lee starting work on Superman, Jos Whedon starting on Astonishing X-Men) all hit around the 210,000 to 225,000 mark - and that was, in part, thanks to multiple covers. If you add in re-orders, you're looking at around 250k max. I'm not saying this isn't going to be big, but if All-Star Batman and Robin breaks 250K the first week (and that's assuming variant covers of some sort), I'll be astonished.

Meanwhile, it'll be more interesting to see how many folks buy the first trade collection six months down the line.

Don't hurt me, but what I'd really like to see is more Frank Miller Daredevil. I re-read Year One recently and it only served to remind me what a letdown the DK Returns sequel was. Hard to get my hopes up for the new project.

I think 350K is a reality.

Why? Jim Lee is the biggest artist in the biz. Frank Miller is probably, one of the top five biggest writers in the biz.

And lastly, when was the last time we saw a Batman #1? A looong time ago.

Frank Miller and Jim Lee chat All-Star Batman @ Newsarama

As Miller said, “This is Dick Grayson's initiation and he's dealing with a very stern teacher. Batman is a hard teacher - unforgiving. Brutal. At the same time, Grayson is watching Batman come into his full power. Me and Jim Lee get to play with all of DC's toys. It'll be a romp. It'll be a lot of fun. I plan on raiding DC's treasury of characters. There won't be a Black Canary or a Wonder Woman unused.”

i know you guys tire of me saying this all the time but you knew it was coming.

DC WINS! DC WINS!! DC WINS!!! thank you and a have a good night. :D

Not in the current continuity? Pass for me. Just like Marvel's Ultimate line I have no use for it.

Granted, this is going to be a bit launch. However, I just don't think the direct market is large enough to hit those kinds of numbers on a single issue anymore. And, while I rather liked it, there's enough folks out there who feel burned on TDKSA that they may be a tad warry of Miller on Batman.

So, here's hoping for 350K...and here's expecting, oh, 225K or so.
