Freaky Sony face image processing software video

Freaky:

Sony has revealed that the PS3 would be capable of processing human portraits in real-time, with special effects added, like hair-style, glasses and etc. Today, we have discovered a short video demontrating this technology.

This video is demonstrating a motion portrait processing software running on a personal computer, developed by Sony. It is very amazing to see computer rendered human portraits moving lively like that. And this amazingly looking portrait was made from only one expressionless poto of the specimen.

A.) Very Old
B.) Technology is developed by Toshiba not Sony.
C.) Its related to Cell and Toshiba's Broadband graphics card and not the PS3.

Still pretty freaky stuff. Impressive! I bet animation studio's would pay big money for that quality facial processing for animation.

But I think there is some catch, I doubt they can move the head more then just a few centimeters like that. Like an optical illusion of sorts.

Yes, you got served :D Go Klee! Go Klee!

Did you play The Bard's Tale? With the disco dance-off between the zombies and the skeletons? Best. Gaming. Moment. Ever.

Some of the expressions are kind of weird but this is very cool none the less.

Looks like the was smiling too much when they shot her mug and the rest was derived from that I guess, so looked forced. :)

This would be awesome if FPS games implemented this. Too bad it will never happen though...next gen would be banned :|

WTF.....man...I gotta play this game :lol

PS2, right??

Maybe it's just me but...if the PS3 launches with the HD IP camera and a new generation of eyetoy stuff, I'd get one just to mess around with the camera capabilities :lol

Especially if the rubber ducky or bathtub demo comes with it.

you, got shut down pretty quick :P

edit: real media? ah screw that.

C'mon guys.....lay off Doom.....god knows I've been pwned quite a bit lately *sheepish grin* :D

Anywhoo.....It seems this is indeed an evolution of that face maniplation software from my 2nd link, except now the software is running on a PC....

I too am intrested to hear a translation of this....

That's some amazing technology they're showing. I read somewhere that they've done something similar with face scanning on PS2 using two photos (one front view, and one profile from the side), but this is the first time I've seen something this convincing using just one photo.

When the PlayStation was first released in the US back in 1995, there was a disc that was given away as a preorder bonus, which contained several development demos that you could interact with. It would be nice if they did something similar for PS3, just to let people see what's possible and fiddle around with it.

That is bloody amazing!

The next eyetoy + the PS3 will be capable of some pretty powerfull stuff methinks.

Or Xbox, maybe its on PC too. It's genious, one of those gems that got kinda neglected. Gameplay is relatively standard, but it's just a sweet game and easily one of the funniest games ever. Awesome songs too.

:lol

Dude, you could do some great stuff with this.

Hang a plasma on your wall with a frame around it. Then hide an eyetoy ...

... you could do the cheesy portrait with eyes that follow you gag :)

Why do so many reporter lie about what Sony say, when Sony never says certain things?
I think the media is hyping the PS3 more than Sony is right now.

Wouldn't this increase the cost of game development? Also you'd actually need "actors" for games now.
You only need one photo to do what was being demonstrated. I'd imagine this would also lead to less use of texture mapping artists.

Kinda like how Sony is credited with saying PS2 can do Toy Story graphics when it was actually MS that said that about Xbox :)

Again, who is the ebony goddess in your avatar??

:lol @ "PS3 would be capable of processing human portraits in real-time"

Even so, that looks really neat/creepy! I'd love to have it as a screensaver ...

I doubt this requires any sort of crazy hardware, though. it looks like they are just mapping an image to some 3d geometry and animating it... but they are just doing it very gracefully. I'm sure they have a bunch of custom stuff dictacting how it should move and deform. The overall result is nice though. It would be interesting to see the different templates they match the face up with... and what to they need to do to 'prep' the image once it's in the system.
