VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Just over the United States northwest border, addicts will soon be able to get their fix from the Canadian government in the form of free heroin (search) administered by nurses and doctors on the taxpayer's dime.

"They're using heroin. They'll continue to use heroin. What we're trying to do is prevent them from getting something irreversible like HIV, hep [hepatitis] C and overdose death,” said Dr. Martin Schechter, the director of the heroin program.

Hopefully this works...but I can't help but be angry at these fucking addicts who are stealing our money. Honestly if it was this or kill them all, I'd be for the latter :lol

I heard of this being done before in eastern Canada.

It does sound like we're paying for addicts to shoot up, but chances are we'd pay more into our Health Care system for all the HIV/Hep C treatment that's covered under MSP. I figure in the long run, it's taxpayers paying less, since Heroin is probably cheaper that all the drug cocktails administered to HIV/AIDS patients.

(I don't know much about HepC treatment, so I can't comment there)
