Freeware thread 2.0 | FREE GAEMS

Many years ago i created a thread dedicated to freewares in the community section. It's essentially abandoned now, especially considering putting it in the community section wasn't the brightest idea. Since then, i've learned of many new freeware games and have actively played multiple of them, so i think it'd be nice to gather all them here (along with some of the old thread).

I'll have a more strict criteria here though. I'll try to avoid games that are too short, too early access or too "flash game-like". I'll focus mainly on experiences that feel more complete and wouldn't normally lose to a paid game (so generally good quality stuff). I'll also try to avoid full conversion mods that require you owning a paid base game (such as Fallout London or Enderal).

Of course, feel free to share games you know without following such strict rules if you wish.

HOWEVER, THIS IS NOT A FREE-2-PLAY THREAD!!!!
NOR IS IT FOR TEMPORARY GIVEAWAYS!!!!
NOR ABANDONWARE!!!!

This is for freewares, games you fully "own" once downloaded and that are officially made available for free forever (or as long as the link is up i suppose). Don't come with Fortnite or Genshin Impact please.

Without further addo:

First, stuff you can get directly on steam:

(☝️Censored version☝️, uncensored needs to be from their official site)

Classic Marathon Trilogy
(☝️Steam links are on the site☝)

Yumme Nikki
(wasn't embedding for some reason

Now onto non-steam stuff:

Entire free GOG library:
GOG Free game collection
>Among them you'll find The Elder Scrolls 1&2, OpenTTD, Shadow Warrior Classic complete, Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar and Tyrian 2000

RPG maker games. There's too many of those so i'll just post some that were very popular:
Ib
OFF
Mad Father
Pocket Mirror
All the three of the above actually lauched improved (paid) Steam versions, so feel free to check those out.

A bunch of total conversion """mods""" that are actually fully standalone (mostly doom engine stuff )
Ashes 2063 (also on GOG) - A post-apocalyptic shooter with some light rpg elements, even including an open world in the second episode.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R Anomaly (also on GOG) - STALKER CoP total conversion that creates a "sandbox" version of the STALKER games.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R GAMMA (also on GOG) - Mod of STALKER Anomaly (that's right, its a total conversion mod of a total conversion mod) that creates a significantly more hardcore survival experience
Apotheosis X - Uses the Classic Marathon engine, tries to be a modernized version of those games and a spiritual successor of sorts.
Sonic Robo Blast 2 - 3D sonic fan game that somehow uses the doom engine. It's not actually complete but has tons of levels already and still in development.
Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers - Sonic Kart fan game that also somehow uses the doom engine. Filled with content, has even more tracks than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Total Chaos - First person survival horror game. Actually released a modernized paid version on steam using unreal engine. Same developer as Turbo Overkill.
Diffusion - Total conversion sci-fi FPS using the Half Life engine. Follows the same type of game focusing on atmosphere and narrative.
Lycanthorn & Lycanthorn II - 3D metroidvanias. Developer also recently launched a paid game following this style called Mohrta.
Shrine & Shrine II - More straightforward than Lycanthorn, but by the same developer.

Now, some that don't fall into particular categories:
Zineth - Weird, fast paced platformer, here's a trailer.
Nitronic Rush - Trackmania-like with tron-style visuals. Has a paid spiritual successor by the same devs called Distance released on Steam.

Flight Gear - Open source flight simulator.
Dwarf Fortress - The one and only. There's a paid version on Steam with actual, non-ASCII graphics.
SuperTuxKart - Here to kill windows once and for all, with speed!
Voices of the Void - 3D Horror game with an interesting premise, where you're put in charge of a facility that analyses space signals. Not content complete but already has plenty. Warning: it's very slow-paced.
Momodora I & Momodora II - 2D Metroidvanias. Put these here because developer released many cool (paid) sequels on steam, like Reverie under the moonlight and Moonlit Farewell.
Mindustry - Factorio-like. Steam (paid) version is identical, except it comes with Steam functionalities.
Rigs of Rods - Do you know Beamng.drive? This is his grandpa. Originally made by the same devs and now an open-source community driven project.

From the old thread. List of commercial video games released as freeware:

Remember, the best things in life are free.

Also, are total conversion mods that still require the purchase of a game valid for this thread? If so:

I used to scourge the interwebs for freebie stuff when I couldn't afford shit, so many good games tbh, from Cave Story and La Mulana to Every Extend and Amanagi and more recently to Locomalito's games (some have commercial deluxe versions etc. now, others don't).
You and me both lol. Loved stuff like Iji or Lyle's in Cube Sector.

Iji is pretty cool. I played it like 20 years ago (damn) but I remember it being kinda like Flashback, but cooler:

a true classic:

there's apparently an HD remaster on Steam, but that one isn't free.

Marti Wong could have done way more with the gameplay basis of this. a Kunio Kun style game with RPG elements for example would have worked really well with the core gameplay established here.

the unique way special moves work is still the best I've seen in a 2D beat em up.
