French studio 'Spiders' is shutting down (Greedfall)

The fall of another "[*]fall".

The curse strikes again.

Seriously, when will devs learn this naming convention does not help them..?

Damn that's unfortunate. After a period of silence they finally released a new Greedfall: The Dying World patch yesterday that fixed a bunch of issues. I was hoping that was a sign that things were going well at the studio.

I bought the game at launch and will play it soon now that it's in a more stable state.

These guys are good devs but the type of games they wanted to make, the budgets they had, and the middling commercial success just wasn't enough.

Type of company that maybe could've had a different result if they got acquired and gotten resources to scale up.

Check out the original Greedfall. You can see some obvious real talent and cool things in there despite corners being cut. The sequel looks to have had some brilliant parts also but the cut corners and rushed dev cycle here led to a product not where it needed to be.

Greedfall 1 was legit good.

Greedfall 2 is utter dogshit.

Still sad to see a studio get closed. Hope the affected land on their feet.

Only kinda enjoyed tecknomancer from them...

Greedfall was interesting but the shit combat, low enemy variety and absurd re-use of assets made me bail out after 15 hours or so.

Shame their games never trully took off, but part of me thinks it's kind of their own fault.

Theyve tried to make too ambitious games with too little resources and it was far more than they could handle.

Tbh that's part of why I adored them. Their games weren't the greatest, but they were incredibly unapologetic about just wanting to make some cool stuff.

Sucks but expected after the publisher pretty much declared banckruptcy. I still have Greedfall 2 to play, no matter how broken unfinished it is I still want to see the end.

Damn thought they were going somewhere after the first greedfall , but greedfall 2 seems like it just disappeared.

That's a shame.
The studio always felt like it had untapped potential, like they just needed a bit more polish and money to become a decent Bioware replacement. But in the end they never got there.

RPG studios looking for writers should definitely take a look at some of the talent here. Greedfall was a bt janky and low budget, but it had solid writing (way better than whatever Bioware is doing these days).

Their last game (greedfall2) got low scores and extremly low sales aka bombed hard af, studio clousures happen in such a competetive industry like game development, its a part of survival of the fittest so not even mad nor sad here, got nothing against the devs personally, just fully understand studio's lifeline depends on their games sales number so stuff like that happens.

Still got way higher scores than it deserves, tells u a lot how high actual bottom of the scores is even for AA game in todays metacritic world when game that is genuine 2 or 3/10 (and i judge game as that being jrpg and wrpg genre fan, so im still biased af) still gets 65meta total from reviewers :messenger_astonished:
It really is that bad :messenger_pensive:

Finished Mars War Logs (6), Technomancer (6) and Greedfall (7).

I am not surprised. Greedfall was their most successful game but even that was not exactly blockbuster, and Greedfall 2 completely bombed.

what are those number in ( )? The times you finished it?

Is there an obvious reason why the second game was so bad? I haven't heard good things about it.

Case of cut budget and therefore obviously unfinished? Or just a bad execution of a bad idea?

From the first it looked like they were building up to be a AA BioWare RPG studio.

It just generally felt like a very poorly made game from the few hours I put into it. It's also one of the most brownest game I've ever played, the art style is basically slather every element of the screen in a shade of brown.

They had interesting world building and ideas but gameplay was very jank and animations were not smooth (maybe due to being in a budget). Steelrising was somewhat cool and ok. Greedfall while the world was interesting it had very clunky combat. Greedfall 2 apparently went full weird turn based?? Anyways, F.

Next on the line to be out of business is DON'T NOD (french again), most of their games have flopped (Banishers, Lost Records: Bloom & Rage) and their latest title (Aphelion) that launched today has 179 people playing on Steam atm, I mean bruh, I don't see the light.

Rough times in the industry.

Like Piranha Bytes, another studio that specialized in eurojank, but made good games imo.
And like Piranha Bytes, another studio gone to the gaming heavens.

God this industry sucks balls lately.

It's a shame to see another European studio close down, even if Greedfall 2 was a whole bunch of bad decisions leading to poor sales. Technomancer for me is a hidden gem and I also enjoyed the first few hours of Greedfall 1 before getting to the copy-paste part of the game. Maybe the sequel would've succeeded if they improved that and kept the rest intact.

Steelrising was a decent Soulslike with a unique setting.
Too bad they chose to peddle masonic propaganda instead of telling the true story of the "French" revolution.
All the famous historical figures you interact with at the hub were freemasons who conspired to destroy the catholic French monarchy, including the fucking priest (Abbé Grégoire).

I only put a few hours into it before deciding to wait for stability patches (my game kept crashing due to a bug with AMD cards) but its nowhere near that bad. I didn't love the combat changes but I was already into the setting, story, and characters and was eager to see how things progressed from there.

Good to hear. I plan to try it out after Saros.

I liked the first Greedfall, but I never got around to Steelrising. I was knee deep in Soulslikes when that game came out.

I still don't know how Don't Nod is still in business. Every Life is Trash game after the first one has sold less and less it seems. Banishers and Lost Records sold so badly even Don't Nod had to publicly state they were failures. I legit think Don't Nod should have ended the Life is Garbage game after Before the Storm, and just worked on new IPs instead of milking that franchise for like 4 games afterwards.

I never felt their games were ever really...good.

But sucks, even though they dont hit the mark, they were driven by passion for their products.
