The alliteration is unintentional. Anyway, these come from a thread on the SA forums, and may not be entirely accurate... Glad to see XXX bombing, though.

HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY 8.1
XXX: STATE OF THE UNION 4.4
INTERPRETER 4.2
AMITYVILLE HORROR 2.6
LOT LIKE LOVE 1.7
SAHARA 1.6
FEVER PITCH 1.1
KUNG FU HUSTLE 1.0
GUESS WHO .7
SIN CITY .6

Seeing nothing on any of the BO sites I check on a regular basis, but these would be slightly surprising...the Hitchhiker numbers are about where I'd expect them to be, but XXX2 that low? Seems a little off.

what Sahara is still around? what a horrible movie horrible script and horrible acting (especially Cruz)

From 2001.....

Penelope Cruz should only be in still pictures. Or silent porn. The English language is not her friend. She couldn't make the sentence "I want a sandwich" sound convincing if she were dying in the middle of the Sahara and a vendor wandered by with a cooler full of sandwiches.

Doug Benson is a prophet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seems about right. Anecdotal, I know, but my theatre had very few people in XXX.

Penelope Cruz is one of the worlds worst actresses. She's not even that good looking either. She can thank her Hollywood career on sucking Tom Cruise's dick.

The summer season of movies kicks off with Star Wars Episode III. (And to a lesser extent, Kingdom of Heaven).
The summer movie season is considered to start this weekend... the past few years, it's been the first weekend in May, but the studios pushed it up this year. Although neither Hitchhiker's Guide or XXX came close to the flagship status of Van Helsing, X2, or Spider-Man (the films that started the summer movie season in 2004, 2003, and 2002, respectively).

You're right about Episode III, though, in that there don't look to be any particularly big (say, 40 million+) openers until then.

For the (understandable) doubters, the numbers are now up on Box Office Mojo:

I knew Hitchhiker's would be one of the summer bombs.
Anyone know what the budget was? I doubt it'll be profitable, but it won't be nearly as big a disaster as XXX... that cost about $118 million, according to the IMDb. Actually, skipping that is looking like a good career move for Vin Diesel.

o_O It definitely wont be considered a bomb -- a film as weird as this doing 22-25 million its first weekend is pretty great. I'm sure it'll do particularly well in the overseas markets and likely end up around $70 or so million in the US.

Now xXx 2 on the other hand..

Well, that's at least a bit circular. If the star of a movie isn't in the sequel and it isn't nearly as popular, at least some of the blame must be put on lack of the original star. Surely Son of the Mask starring Jim Carrey would've been more successful, too.

Yeah, I've been really big on movies lately...Saw Sin City three times, Amnity Ville Horror (which was a horror) once, and Kung Fu Hustle last night. I'm really hoping both Sin City and Kung Fu Hustle come to UMD.

Yeah, I know. But I suspect that the movie would have performed poorly even with Diesel in it, given the, um, quality of the first film. Maybe not.

Yeah...XXX clearly succeeded entirely due to Diesel.

The numbers for Hitchhiker's Guide really aren't that surprising, if you ask me. I mean, it is a relatively obscure series of books for the casuals, and while by all appearances the film dials it back a bit there it still remains British Humour. It was never going to be a huge success right out of the gate for them, if you ask me. I've seen a whole lot more ads for XXX2, even, than I have Hitchhiker's. While it likely cost a lot of money, I do not believe Disney was coming in expecting a huge box office smash.

If it can sustain the family-friendly blockbuster standing for the next three weeks, it should do alright pre-Ep.III.

Exactly right. H2G2 is this year's Hellboy, an inexpensive genre pic that peforms strong with core audiences, grosses $60-70 and does quite nicely on home video and foreign.

If these projections are right, we'll probably hear news of a sequel within four months.

And, it's not summer yet jackasses.

I saw GUESS WHO with my ex-girlfriend today, first time seeing her in 3 years
She wanted to meet today, she said a movie would help break the ice, girly flicks rock :)

I had fun seeing Kung Fu Hustle but I was alone then...

Do I need to repeat myself? The studios consider this the start of the summer movie season. Audiences, however, seem to think otherwise.

Hell Kingdom of Heaven will probably do well next weekend.
Don't see it doing more than $30 million or so, opening weekend...
EDIT: Kingdom of Heaven, I mean

Yes, and the studios are the jackasses. The movie summer begins Memorial Day weekend. They've been trying to weasel additional weeks out of the summer by releasing their big explosion movies early, but if people are still scraping ice off their windshields it ain't summer.

Anyway, Hitchhikers is a perfect example of the April movie. This is when studios traditionally release the movies that they can't figure out, because they have zero box office expectations until school's out.

You're thinking of Sin City. :D

Sorry, I misunderstood there. But the "first weekend in May" strategy has worked the past few years... they may have pushed their luck too far. But it hurt that neither really felt like an "event" movie, from the marketing.
