1. The 40-Year Old Virgin - $7.3 Million
2. Red Eye - $6.2 Million
3. Four Brothers - $3.5 Million
4. The Skeleton Key - $2.5 Million
5. Wedding Crashers - $2.3 Million
6. March of the Penguins - $1.9 Million
7. Valiant - $1.8 Million

Of Note:

- Valiant gets its ass kicked...let's hope that Disney has itself a fantastic marketing campaign for Chicken Little as well as a whole lot of buzz. Disney may not have spent much money on Valiant, but it was a huge risk due to its possible failure. And, here we are, with a complete bomb and a taint on the Disney name when linked with CG features.

- Relatively unsurprising weekend, although 40 Year-Old Virgin is coming in a bit above estimates, as is Red Eye.

- Also, note the lack of Deuce Bigelow, which will not even make the Top 10 this weekend, as well as the lack of the abysmal Supercross, which opened on Wednesday.

Weekend Pace (From: http://www.boxofficereport.com/wbon/daily.shtml)
1. The 40-Year Old Virgin - $22 Million
2. Red Eye - $18 Million
3. Four Brothers - $12.3 Million
4. Wedding Crashers - $8.5 Million
5. The Skeleton Key - $8.0 Million
6. March of the Penguins - $7.5 Million
7. Valiant - $6.0 Million

Disney marketing aborted Valiant some weeks ago. They've waged a much more impressive campaign for Chicken Little. I don't think Valiant will taint Little, if only because public awareness of the movie is so very low.

They've been advertising Chicken Little for over a year already (though that started back when the movie was still slated for this past summer). I don't think it'll bomb... well, not to the same degree as Valiant, anyway.

I am gonna get hit harder on any stock in HSX history with Valiant.. we're talking around a 2 million dollar loss I bet. It was cheap for Disney to make and they'll cover expenses with the home market for sure, but man does that hurt me. Chicken Little will be big I bet.

Watching "Stealth" bomb has been entertaining.

Weekend 1: 3,495 theaters, $13,251,545 for the weekend.
Weekend 2: 3,495 theaters, $5,923,794 for the weekend, total $24,581,921.
Weekend 3: 2,040 theaters, $2,151,768 for the weekend, total $29,668,413.

And this weekend, it has dropped another 1333 theaters to 707. It's not even in the top 15 for the Friday estimates. Through Thursday its total is $30,641,821.

Correction: It was cheap for Disney to purchase the distribution rights. They had absolutely NO creative input into this film, as far as I know (And I may be wrong with this, so absolutely might not have been the best word). Their distribution expenses will probably be covered alright, but I think Disney was hoping for a market that would be receptive to a new kids' film.

Of course, then the Penguins decided to March on into the mainstream, and that whole plan was shot to hell.

I thought 40 Year Old Virgin would make a bit more to be honest...seems to have generated a lot of positive buzz. Wouldn't be surprised if it has similiar legs to Wedding Crashers (which only dropped 28% BTW...strong, strong legs).

Disney has a multiple picture deal with Vanguard Animation Studios. Valiant was first shown at the announcement of the deal with Disney, as far as I know, so they come along at least midway through development and have been signed on prior to development for the other three films.

Since each film was budgeted at $40 million, I think Valiant has come close to that in its total worldwide gross. That being said, I'm sure Disney's not thrilled with it.

There was a preview for their next film. It also looked poor. I'm wondering if Disney can buy their way out of this distrubition deal.

This? I think the casting speaks for itself. Well, the first two names on there, anyway... so very 1998.

EDIT: Wait a minute... you saw Valiant? Why?

:lol

HSX rocks. I shorted Valiant. I win.

I'm sure Disney will find a way to explain their way out of this one.

Possible reasons for Valiant's failure:
1. Too British (The success of Chicken Little kind of goes against this, but they'll ignore that. Doesn't exist)
2. People don't like World War II (A sound theory)
3. Carrier Pigeons just don't connect with today's kids.
4. THE BLOODY PENGUINS

Their next film, coincidentally, seems to be fairy-tale themed (*Cough*Shrek*Cough*) so I'm sure that they're banking on it to perform a little better...and praying for less penguins.

Did Disney release another crappy film at the wrong time of the year? A kids film? It's getting to be late August. Kids are back in school, not begging to go to a summer movie.

That this movie even made 30mill is an insult.

Stealth is not a good movie... but I still liked it. I'm just partial to planes... even fake CG planes....

I think they were going for a sort of Summer Send-Off...right in the middle of the continued rise of March of the Penguins.

Argh, I dunno' if Wedding Crashers can break 200 now. It seems like it's really slowing down. Hopefully it can do something big within the next 3 weeks.

Current total is $177 Million, so it needs only $23 Million...it'll probably do it. It really depends on whether or not people choose it over the newer 40-Year Old Virgin. But, I expect it will break it eventually, if not by much.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory should do so within a couple of weeks, though.

Why does it matter? It's a big hit regardless.

Holy shit.. Supercross opened on wednesday with over 1500 theatres and it's at 15th! :lol

15 Supercross Fox $1,325,000 $2,005,000

According to BOM the budget is unkown but they must have spent at least $15M on marketing and I'd say the film was probably $30-40M. Good grief, it will be lucky to pass Pluto Nash's abysmal $4.4M domestic total (granted it's budget was $120M with marketing and opened in 2300 theatres).

And there's Stealth, in its 4th week:

20. Stealth - $550k, a paltry $777 per theater average

Batman Begins made more this weekend -- in 310 fewer theaters! :)

Batman!!

I imagine 40 Year Old Virgin will take away a lot of the audience from Wedding Crashers. The latter is already a far bigger hit then many thought possible, but it's always nice to hit that $200 million mark.
