From the creator of Polygon magazine...

Anybody remember Polygon Magazine? It's been about a year since they went under, but they were a great little magazine that I was hoping would do better. They had a lot of great articles that the major US mags wouldn't think of touching. Looks like they're coming back, but in a different form:

...comes the new quarterly, advertising-free videogames industry
newsletter called "The Polygon Report." Whereas the monthly Polygon
magazine was geared towards the older videogame-playing public, "The
Polygon Report" is aimed at those in the industry itself, discussing
issues important to mid-level management on down to developers
themselves. Since we don't accept advertising, "The Polygon Report" is
entirely free from corporate control and can freely report on
previously taboo issues like long development hours, market
monopolies, and so on.

Right now I'm considering the feasibility of such a newsletter -- if
you're interested in seeing a truly independent, reader-supported
videogame industry publication, please respond to this email and
pledge a year's subscription ($65 per year). And, more importantly,
pass this email along to your colleagues!

Yours,

Dane Baker

$65 for four newsletters? With that price, the only audience it'll get is college libraries. What's wrong with a pay website?

You can extract a premium price for an industry rag. See: GameWeekly and the arcate trade mag - name escapes me (arcadia?).

What was the name of the site before it turned into polygon mag? I used to read news from there back in 2000, but its name escapes me.

Polygon was xengamers, and was cloudchaser before that. It was an excellent magazine with the best features in the biz and I was very sad to see it go. Their reviews and previews were lacking, but their cover features were literally unmatched (imo).

Well saying that polygon was xengamers/cloudchaser is the simple answer. Obviously in reality things are much more complicated than that (as they often tend to be).

What Polygon inherited from Silicon was its circulation (75,000 or thereabouts I believe), but as for the website, not the mag, yes Polygon was Xengamers previously.

Yeah, but they're all dead and from before the era of Internet permeance. RePlay magazine is still around, but it hasn't had much video-game content for the past three or so years.
