Why is Funimation taking so long to release DBZ in its entirety in one or two gigantic box sets with remastered sound and video?

Japan came out with two fantastic DBZ sets called 'Dragonbox 1' and 'Dragonbox 2'. From what I have seen and heard, the picture quality murders the Funi dvds, which look pretty bad IMHO.

As a die hard DBZ fan, I have seen nearly all episodes of the series except for towards the end where Buu is introduced. I have not seen the show in over three years because I am waiting for a proper release of the dvds done right! What's with Funimation releasing them all out of order and shit? The FIRST saga(saiyun) hasn't been even been done yet!!!!! We've gotten a few episodes in a certain saga every few months. It's inexcusable!

C'mon Funimation...release a giant DBZ box set with a video transfer ripped directly from the Japanese set!! I want to see this show again for the first time in three years but not at the expense of a bunch of shitty butchered American dvds!

Has anyone heard anything on what or if Funi will do anything soon?

Uh, the Saiyan Saga got released like four years ago on DVD, if not further back. Frieza Saga also... but remember that those belonged to Pioneer first, not funi.

You can get Frieza saga single discs, but I haven't seen Saiyan Saga ones in singles.

As far as two big ass boxes, go... let me go count what we've got here... we've got 59 different discs in stock for DBZ domestic, not counting the Saiyan Saga, the two-disc Trunks set, or any of the movies. So add all those in, then split it in two...

... way too much for an old series that's dwindling in popularity now that Naruto is the new Goku.

Buy bootleg, buy often.

I think FUNimation has their hands full right now dealing with actual good series...like Fullmetal Alchemist. :D

Well for the record Kabuki, I've been watching anime for 10 years and my favorite anime is Macross...with Berserk, Vision of Escaflowne, Princess 9, Cowboy Bebop, and Evangelion at the top of my list as well.

What are your favorite shows?

Naruto sucks man the fights drag just as mucha s DBZ and with just as much posing.

edit: wait you like Berserk??? all is forgiven.

What.

I just defended you, dude. What the hell is this?

Jim, if you haven't seen P9 I wholeheartedly recommend it dude. Despite what appears to be a fruity exterior, with chicks in baseball uniforms on the dvd cover and whatnot, this is one of the best anime series ever. The character development is unparalleled. And the plot and story is nothing short of incredible. Give it a chance.

DBZ nuts I hear rumors from cat's around my way about these dvd's of dbz.
They say you can get these extremly violent sexual dbz dvd's that they claim are the japanese versions.
I can believe they water things down for the US cartoon network show since this is a kids show.
The skeptic in me can't believe there are these mature content dragon ball z's floating around.

*FUNIMARION ANNOUNCES DBZ SEASON ONE AND TWO*

November 24, 2004

FUNimation is planning to release the first 63 Dragon Ball Z episodes, complete and uncut, for the first time in the U.S. This new Dragon Ball Z DVD series will be titled the Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Uncut Special Editions.

Some of the material from these episodes was previously released in Ocean editions, which presented the material as it had been edited for broadcast. The first 63 episodes were edited down into 50 episodes, with many key segments, including major fight scenes (such as a key battle between Goku and Vegeta), heavily edited. FUNimation is re-recording the dubbed versions with voice actors consistent with the other FUNimation episodes; subtitled versions of each episode will, of course, also be included on the same discs. Both picture and sound will be of the highest quality, including 5:1 surround sound. Each disc will also include extras, including information about the history of Dragon Ball Z and the significance of these episodes. The discs will be packaged with new trade dress to reflect the nature of these special editions. The first two discs in the series will be released in April and June, 2005.

FUNimation is also giving a similar treatment to three Dragon Ball Z movies previously released by Pioneer in the late 1990s--The Dead Zone, The World's Strongest, and Tree of Might. The company will release the first in May, 2005, with at least one more to be released in 2005.

FUNimation will also continue releasing its own editions of the Dragon Ball Z movies in sequence. Movie #10 will be released on March 29th, #11 in August, and #12 and #13 to follow.

Although the TV exposure of the Dragon Ball Z property is not what it was (with Cartoon Network's Toonami block moved from its strip position to a Saturday night slot, see "Toonami Gets Saturday Night Fever"), these strong DVD releases, with a positioning to appeal to the older, "core" anime audience, will undoubtedly not only sell on their own, but also promote interest in all things Dragon Ball Z in 2005.

This is great news but I mean God DAMN....only two discs and not until April 2005? Fuck that shit! Why don't they do a box set for fucks sake??? At this rate it's gonna AGES before all of the discs are out!! :extremelypissed:

Yup. I don't really care that they're redubbing them though. I mainly want to see the show for the first time in its original Japanese language. Is it true that the Jap Goku is played by a girl?

do these dvds have the original japanese audio tracks with the awesome original MUSIC intact?

yes :)

But I am having second thoughts about buying FUNi's dvds. According to some people I've talked to, their DBZ discs are not encoded nearly as good as the region 2 Dragonbox discs from Toei. I am actually thinking of having this one guy rip the Dragonbox discs and re-encode them 1:1 with zero quality loss and adding English subs from FUNi's discs. He claims he it will take about 100 DVD-Rs but he will provide them and will only charge $5 pop. So it's just a question of when I'll have the money to do it.

So they're adding 13 episodes of fighting? Wee...
Episode 1: I will beat you as soon as I power up!
Episode 2: Okay, I'm gonna power up!
Episode 11: Almost there...

etc.

At least Naruto lags you down with flashbacks and not some ass going AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa for like nine minutes... -_-

Wait, the TV version actually had 13 episodes CUT OUT? As far as I could tell, 95% of the time was spent with "RAWR I WILL OWN YOU" *powers up* ... "NO NO, I WILL OWN YOU" *powers up* ... 12 episodes later... *Finally powers up and attacks but misses* "I may have missed but I will still own you" ... 26 episodes later ... zzzz

If I remember correctly, they actually didn't cut out many complete episodes. They simply cut out a second or two in between the actual scenes when there wasn't any action taking place, made a whole lot of those cuts, and managed to get the time down by quite a bit.

EDIT:

As I was going through these episodes, watching American and Japanese side by side looking for the differences, I noticed that the tapes would constantly get out of synchronization with each other. On closer inspection, I realized what was going on. There were dozens and dozens of miniscule snippets being removed every few seconds, small, almost unnoticeable edits. For a while I recorded them all, but it started to become way too much work, to take up way too much space, and it seemed a little pointless to be getting that precise. There are probably many of you wondering how FUNimation is able to crunch two episodes into one and make it look like nothing is missing. Well, these little micro-snippets are how they do it. By shortening lines of dialogue by a few seconds here and there, editing a few quick shots, and speeding up the film as the camera pans across a mountain (for example), a lot of time can be saved in the long run. These snippets actually make up the majority of the editing in the series.

I was talking to reps at this years 'Anime Central' con, and I told them that they better increase the number of episodes on each DVD or no sale. Some of the earlier DVDs had maybe 3-4 episodes. So if you know the series, it could take one box set just to watch one fight. And with a series that over 300 episodes, and several years old they could do better. The reps face just turned red as a beet. Anyway, I'm happy with YuYu Hakusho and the upcoming Full Metal Alchemist. They just use DragonBallZ to keep a steady cash flow coming in IMHO.

It's more that Naruto would be done with the fight and on to something else after the second episode. Flashbacks included. Third episode if it's a REALLY big fight.

Really?

Episode 60 something: I will kill you Orochimaru
Episode 79: god damn, this sword has been stuck in me for like NINE episodes, and I've been pulling on your soul, but I'm gonna kill you, just you wait! Oh wait, I b ded. </hokage>

Episode 60 something: UCHIHA SASUKE UCHIHA SASUKE
Episode 70 something: UZUMAKI NARUTO UZUMAKI NARUTO </gaara>

It's not quite as bad as dbz, but naruto sure did drag from like 66-80...

And what's up with this filler I saw from like 96-106? Sheesh...

They're that bad. They've gone down quite a bit. I'd of bought them in a nanosecond if they were subbed!

It did drag a little bit, but in that time span of 14 episodes there were AT LEAST 5 different major fights. The Hokage fight is the ONLY one that really broke the 2 or 3 episode rule (and really, that fight itself was about 3 episodes, they just put it on pause right at the end, went to other stuff and came back to it later). DBZ would have taken that same time for 1 fight. 2 at the absolute maximum.

And the filler did suck, but not everything from 97-106 was filler (episode 100, for example, was from the manga). Still, if it takes 5 filler episodes once in a blue moon to keep the series going and make sure the manga stays far enough ahead, then I can live with that.

One Piece had almost the same amount of filler at the EXACT same part of the series, too, you know.

Dude, you are fucking HARDCORE!!!! Man, I thought I was a dedicated fan. If you can make that happen, fucking go for it . As for the Dragonboxes' video quality, I've got em' all and yes, the video quailty kills Funi's. Track those boxes down and do your thing man.

WHAM BAM What the fuck just happened there? THis is possibly the best post on GAF forever.

I would have the Dragonboxes by now, except that I still have to save up and fucking get box 1, and with Christmas, savings arent looking too fab right now... but right after christmas, it should be good (hey, 2 out of 3 isnt bad)!

But relaly, FUNimation, you don't need to do saiyaman on individual volumes, shit, you don't even need to do cell games on individual volumes. What you need to do is start a super platinum remastered version of the first two seasons, and continue with that all the way through.

Seriously, what the fuck?

Heh heh....thanks guys

Yeah it's frustrating. I came in contact with a guy over on the DBZOA forums and we were discussing the picture quality differnce between the original R2 Dragonbox dvds, Funi's uncut dvds, and MI's boot dvds...which I won't go into here. Suffice to say, he knew his shit when it comes to the PQ differences and maintains that the color on Funi's discs is over-saturated. This guy has offered to rip the Dragonbox dvds, add sub from Funi's dvds to them. I will refer to this as the "Custom Dragonbox Re-rip Project" .The thing is, he doesn't have a solution for where he'd get subs for the first two seasons and said that if he were to use a fansub VHS as a source, that it would be more difficult to add them to the dvds than it would be adding them from Funi's dvds(not sure why this is).

I could have bought both Dragonboxes already and watched them raw, unsubbed. But like I said, 1)I want them English subbed and 2) I'm saving up for a front projector(Infocus Screenplay 5700..MSRP $3999) and want to see Goku turn Super Saiyan for the first time on a 110" screen!

I'll be honest with you.....I'm not THAT anal about picture quality on something like an anime TV series, and I would have collected all the Funi uncut mini boxsets already. But the simple fact is that they are only available from the Ginyu saga onwards. Hence the reason I'm so pissed off and don't want to start watching them from the Ginyu arc, but want to start from the beginning instead. Depending on how much money I can scrape together in the next few months, I may have this other gentlemen do the "Custom Dragonbox Re-rip Project", or may just wait and see if Funi announces a boxset for the first two seasons.

Finally, this may be a stupid question....but when you guys refer to the Saiyaman arc, are you referring to the first two seasons? Are the first two seasons called the Saiyaman saga? Or is the Saiyaman saga another saga after Buu?

Dead

well not really...yet
Man id consider buying uncut season box sets, thats my fucking childhood right there. Everytime I see the US version I cringe, the music makes me deathly ill :X
