GAF Guitarists: I need your help.

Within the next 2-3 weeks I plan on buying a high end acoustic guitar or a upper midrange electric guitar, due to the fact I also have to buy a decent amp.

My tastes are rather particular, especially concerning the neck. The style I play ranges from boogie and blues to rythem to hard rock. The kind of neck I'm looking for is something that doesn't taper in width from the nut to where the neck meets the body. Something that feels pretty much the same on the 2nd fret and the 9th fret for example. I prefer a wider fretboard, with a thinner neck/arch. In an acoustic, something with a neck similar to a classical guitar except not AS wide and thinner. Fast. I also prefer in an acoustic a deeper, powerful tone where the bass strings really stand out when strummed but the whole package still sounds balanced.

I want kind of the same thing in an electric, especially with the tapering of the neck. I prefer the neck to feel the same on the 2nd fret as it does on the 12th fret on an electric.

GAF guitarists, could you help me narrow down my search so I don't have to play every single guitar at my local guitar shops to find what I'm looking for?

In terms of Amps I was looking into what one of my teachers has which is IIRC, a Line 6 Tonemaster 2 that came with a really decent multieffects pedal.

Just out of curiosity, how are the Line 6 Variex's?

I have an Ibanez S4 and it's pretty awesome... it's probably below the range of what you're looking for, though... perhaps a Gibson? I dunno.

Didn't you have $2000 for a guitar a few months back? What did you spend that on?

I ended up not getting the moneys ;_;

I ordered a custom guitar from Poland, for £800. That includes a hard case, having my own artwork/decals and delivery!

There's a five month waiting time though, mine is arriving within the next few weeks :D Other than that, a high end Ibanez will last you for years.

Nice. I gave serious thought to one of these for my last guitar purchase, but:

1) They don't look as nice as the guitar I bought. Shallow, but important. :)

2) They sound almost as good as the guitars they simulate. If you only want the range of sounds a single guitar will give you, then you're better off with the real thing.

3) Reliability becomes a big issue - failures will be highly noticeable and very expensive.

It's a guitar based music game coming out at some point. Your controller is essentially a guitar, you press buttons and strum and use a whammy bar. Looks pretty dang skippy.

How much money do you have to invest in this? Also, keep in mind if you go for the electric the amp will determine most of the tone, so you should give us some specifics on what you're looking for in an amp as well.

I have $1500 - $2000 for a guitar on it's own if it's an acoustic.

$1500-2000 for an electric AND an amp if I decide to go electric.

I'll be able to be more of a help with electrics than acoustics...so here is what I have to say about electrics.
Ibanez tends to have fairly wide necks that are thin. Personally I find my Ibanez quite hard to play well after having my ernie ball so long, but some people prefer the ibanez necks. My guitar is not very versatile, however it is also not very high end(the Ibanez, that is). It'd be best to try out anything in the store before deciding it's what you want.

Which brings me to my next point...

Just go to the nearest shop and try everything they have in your price range. Your own hands give far better advice than even the most seasoned expert could hope to give you. What one person feels is a bad neck you may absolutely love. And vice versa. I say this exact thing in every thread, but only because it's the absolute honest truth. Decide for yourself what guitar is best for you. Leaving such a large investment up to the choice of others, especially when its completely possible to give the investment in question a test drive before you buy it, is not wise.

One question...how long have you been playing?

And one last suggestion...play every guitar at your guitar shop in your price range. That is honestly as much as you should narrow down your search. I'm dead serious.

With 2k you might want to play with the idea of saving up just a bit more and get a custom made one. Lesser known (but not lesser good) guitar makers will make you one starting around 3-4k. And it's very worth it.

I've been playing other peoples guitars since I was like 9 years old. I've only had my own guitar since August of last year which is when I really started to get better and understand what it is I was doing and how music works.

I'm pretty good I think, some people here have heard me play and that was a couple months ago. I'd say I'm much better now than I was just a few months ago.

The only problem I have with anything custom is that you can't hear how it sounds until it's already made. I'm pretty sure I can find an electric that fits my specifications. I'm not so sure how easy it would be for me to find an acoustic with those kinds of specs though, and thats where the natural sound is most important to me.

All the guitar makers that I've dealt with always have several "projects" lying around so you can see what kinds of sounds they produce so you can say, "I want something like this". But it really is a luxury, and is mostly only for those that are acoustic or classical aficionados.
