GAF I just got my wisdom teeth pulled.

Both left and right sides. Didn't feel a thing with the novocaine but now I'm starting to feel it and I had a ton of gauze and blood the past 3 hours being used. I'm getting a headache too. I was told I can't do some things and can't eat particular things within the first 24 hours.

Just made myself a smoothie for lunch and I'm quite undecided what I can eat for dinner.

When will I typically feel ok and start being able to do normal stuff?

I was fine the night I had all four of my impacted teeth pulled out. I have a masochistic level of pain tolerance though so no idea how long it takes for others.

Wisdom teeth suck. I was lucky when I got mine out and after a rough first night was pretty much fine. I ate Velveeta mac and cheese for a week and beat Half Life 2. It was pretty dope.

Oh man, OP, I feel for you. This is going to be a SHIT few days.

I was in agony for the best part of a week after mine were extracted, no matter how many painkillers I took. After that it hurt but I could sleep and talk and start to eat properly. 2 weeks and the healing was well underway and could ignore it. About a month to completely heal.

Avoid dry socket at all costs. I'd be extra cautious with straws/cigarettes. At least a few days, more if you can help it.

Just got one wisdom tooth removed a few weeks ago. After a day or two you'll be done with gauze, took me about two weeks to feel like it was really starting to heal.

I had all four pulled (bottom two were impacted) last December. I spent the week after popping pain meds and playing video games. Fun times.

I remember when I had mine pulled. I was high as a kite for the next 2 or 3 days while just sitting back and playing GoW Ascension.

Good times.

I got one pulled yesterday and felt really bad afterwards. Today was already a lot better and I was able to eat normally, for the most part.
Having all of them pulled at once sounds awful though. I would stick to soup for the first day and then try something soft, like mashed potatoes.

I didn't have any troulbe with straws yesterday, but then again, I only got one pulled...

I had a blast after getting my wisdom teeth pulled. Just had some painkillers to get rid of the pain every once in a while, sat at home watching tv/playing games, and ate some soup/porridge during recovery. Super easy and practically painless.

Enjoy your vacation

Both sides at the same time? Yeah, good luck with that. Though i suppose since they overdose you on opiates in US... Oh well.

I got a tooth yanked today too!

My mouth feels empty.

Do not use straws, smoke, or chew gum for two weeks unless you want to risk dry socket. Anything that involves suction is a no go. Mine was pretty easy and i just sick with ibuprofen. Just make sure to use everything as directed.

I just had my Wisdom Teeth out about three months ago actually, so hopefully I can answer any questions you have. You are going to be in a lot of pain for at least two or three days, but then it should start to ease up. Keep your gauze in until the bleeding stops as well, and then you should stop wearing it to help facilitate the formation of blood clots. Don't drink from straws or generally do anything that involves sucking. Be careful with coughing/sneezing as well.

You need to be careful of this stuff because you have to let blood clots form over the holes where your Wisdom Teeth used to be, and it's actually pretty easy to displace your clot for the first few days. If that happens, you will get a "Dry Socket", and you don't want that from what I've heard (I was very cautious for the first week or so, and thankfully didn't have to deal with that). As for normal food, it will probably take a week or possibly longer before you can comfortably eat normal food. This sucks, big time. Yogurt, ice cream, and other soft, cold foods are probably your best bet right now.

Anyway, hope I answered any questions you might have. I know what you're going through, and it I know it blows, but trust me, there's light at the end of the tunnel. You'll also be glad you got those suckers out in the long run, too.

I had to have mine taken out over two separate visits, months apart. The first time wasn't so bad - the painkillers were great and I got better in a few days. The second time, I was prescribed a different painkiller that felt like it never worked, and then my jaw locked up several days after the surgery. I couldn't even open my mouth wide enough to place a spoon between my teeth for almost a week, and I had to exercise my jaw muscles to get back to normal, which was surprisingly painful.

Ugh I vape alot. This is gonna suck if I have to hold off on that for at least a week. The notion of not doing or eating things is more painful than the actual teeth being removed!

I think dry socket is far more painful than either of those.

You'll live going a few weeks without.

2 weeks is a little excessive? I was told just the first 24 hours.

Avoid straws for at least a week man. Dry Socket are a risk for at least 5 days after your surgery, I believe. Trust me, better safe than sorry. Also, I forgot to mention that you should avoid pop and anything else acidic for at least a few days as well. If that stuff gets into your holes, it can burn/hurt kinda bad.

I got all four of mine out less than a month ago. First day after all the medication wore off was rough and I went to bed early. From the next day on I was fine but took the pain meds on schedule for a few days to be sure. About 4 days after I started carefully eating more solid foods and after a week I wasn't even thinking about it anymore.

Except for the holes, at least. Still have some big holes where the teeth were on the left side. Top isn't too bad but the bottom one still feels bottomless and so much food gets stuck in it. Sometimes I can swish water to get stuff out but most of the time I have to use the little spray thing they gave me.

I don't really do much that would have put me at risk of dry socket (can't recall the last time I ever used a straw, don't smoke or chew gum, etc). Spitting isn't much of a problem after the first day I guess? You want the blood to clot so you don't want to spit it out.

The most painful thing when I got mine out was the hours-long case of hiccups that one of the painkillers gave me

What causes dry socket and what does it actually mean?

Blood clot comes out exposing all the nerves and stuff. As I understand it you basically want to avoid negative pressure in the mouth (straws, and spitting while it's still forming and to a lesser extent after) and things like gum that can catch on to it and pull it out.

Not sure how smoking works. Maybe dries the clot out so it loosens.

It's when the blood clot dislodges and your nerves become exposed. Read up on some testimonials, that'll be motivation enough to hold off. Maybe do some baking instead :)

I was also told to use warm salt water to rinse my mouth after 24 hours. Is this advisable?
Yep, just let it dribble out so you're not spitting. I did that for about a week.

My wife had 3 pulled on Friday and only took the medicine Friday night and Saturday morning. She's not eating anything hard yet, but she's been handling this like a champ.

Be more like my wife.

Yes, after 24 hours, you should do that. Use the syringe-type thing they gave you (assuming you got one). Just fill it up with warm salt water, then slowly shoot it into the holes. I found it somewhat soothing, tbh.

Edit: Also, yes, just kinda open your mouth and "drool" it out, so to speak. Avoid spitting in general for awhile.

Oh man any advice for me. I'm getting all 4 taken out towards the end of May. I'm taking off 4 days from work so I hope that's enough time. I'm also just using local anesthetic like you, so i'll be awake for it all. Said it'll take about an hour. Any food suggestions?

I spent the first day after my wisdom teeth surgery over the sink, blood pouring out of my mouth because my blood clot fell out. Can't remember when it got "better" but it definitely wasn't that bad afterward.

I'm also pretty sure that it goes a lot better if you're careful not to have the blood clot fall out.

I got knocked the f-out and woke up SUPER messed up.

Allegedly I put a towel on my head and pretended I was a terrorist (this was pre-9/11 so it was only marginally in bad taste).

That lasted like an hour. Then it was just sore for a while.

Yep don't vape or smoke for a while. My lady regularly sees patients light up right after a procedure even when advised not to and can pretty much schedule the day they will come back in pain from dry socket. You will probably need to grab the patches if you are having a lot of problems but hold out as long as you can.

Stay strong OP! I had a single wisdom tooth that they had to drill for. They medicine they give does help with the pain. The stitches were the worst part as it made eating almost impossible.
