i'm looking for something that'll play divx/xvid files, cause i watch a lot of foreign flicks. in fact that's mostly what i watch.
i'm sure a lot of you anime watchers have experience with this stuff. whats a good quality player?

in before move

philips 642a, under $100 and is a favorite. will play nearly anything you throw at it and has a four button set to region 0 sequence.

+1, I'm 'bout to go pick up a 2nd one of these beauties for the bedroom.

Philips DVP-642, $69.99 at Target, $59.99 at Walmart.

Pro-scan, Divx/Xvid, easy all-region code, does PAL decently...just the absolute best deal for your $$$

Rhindle: That box looks pretty sick, lemme know if you get any more info on it =)
BTW, the Phillips doesn't come with component cables right? and it shows subtitles correctly?
edit: gotcha.

no, sir.

does subs just fine and dandy.

i <3 this player and recomend it to anyone who needs a region 0 dvd player

screw it, +1k on this box...it really is just an awesome DVD/Divx player.
Yeah, subs are great on it, I've been using it to watch some r3 Shaw Bros. re-releases, as well as an HK Old Boy release and some Samurai Champloo fansubbed Xvids...not one issue.

lol

i picked it up predominately to play those old shaw bros. movies

anyway, if anyone is inspired to pick one of these up you may look into nicheflix.com, which it net flix for foreign films.

a little bit pricier and a little bit slower than netflix, but still, very very very worth it imo.

My Phillips DVD793 plays just about anything I throw at it- even stuff that doesn't follow the DVD spec. I've ripped stuff off of my Dish DVR, burnt it to DVD, and the little Philly plays it without a hiccup.

my Philips plays just about any optical disk i can put in it, does prog scan, all regions and has a built 5.1 decoder for fun.

I'm down with the Oppo 971. I'll probably order one soon.

I've recently discovered the amazing world of British comedy television series' on DVD.

Yea, I recently got the Oppo player and I'm pretty happy with it. It's a bit slow and glitches often but being able to play everything under the sun burned onto disc and various region dvds and get upscaling to 1080i is pretty damn nice :)

Plays Divx/Xvid?!! Consider this bought!

Hmmm...I might need one of these Phillips players. Got my folks to buy me the Tintin DVD collection while they were in England a couple weeks ago, and would like to watch 'em in here. Having said that my dad got a multi-region player for like 30 bucks on eBay, so at least I've got that option.

BTW, do modded PS2's play DVD's from other regions?
