Galactic Civilizations II: #1 selling software at Wal-mart.

Ripped from Qt3:

"We just got our report on the first week of sales of Galactic Civilizations II. Despite some availability problems, we're told that we're presently the best selling software title at Walmart. Let me be clear: Not just #1 PC game, but overall software.

Best Buy, EB, and Gamestop have put in additional orders that actually exceed their initial sell-in orders (which you may recall were 3X what GalCiv I's initial retail presence was)."

But remember folks, only Blizzard and EA PC games sell well :-p.

Great stuff. GalCiv2 isn't a great game, but it's a good one, and its success is heartening for a number of reasons:

1. It's made by an independent developer
2. It's a turn-based strategy game--the truth is, there's a big demand for the meaty and deep sorts of games that ruled the gaming world in the late 90's and early 2000's. GalCiv2's success shows that this demand will translate into retail sales, and that the vast majority of publishers are stupid for not properly exploiting this potentially huge market segment.

Simply put, dumbing down games doesn't help them sell. This game will hopefully convince the big publishers of that.

And don't forget:

3: This game is one of the very few these days that shipped without any form of DRM copy protection. And lo and behold, it is still actually selling quite nicely, thank you. (Another link)

Take note publishers. I have no doubt that the DRM crap they throw on all these games turns more people away from buying the game than piracy does. Especially since the DRM doesn't stop the games from showing up on newsgroups and bittorrent sites everywhere anyway. It only hurts the paying customer by installing lots of unnecessary crap on their computers.

Very surprising, and of course -great- news, especially considering that Stardock is one of the most robust, if not the overall best, forms of online distribution ever. With that taken into account, the developers have to be pretty damn pleased with themselves. Way to go, guys. :D

3. Its not a $60.00 title.

Haha, PC haters have something to wonder about ;p
(a joke, don't ban me Vennt!)

Wait - no major console title (Black?) has been recently released... if there's no competition then there's no victory.

I think an independent game with no (or hardly any) advertising outselling Several of EA's heavily advertised efforts (Black, MLB 06) is quite a bit of a victory. Also, it outsold the latest Sims expansion as well.

OS/2 FTW.

Heh If I remember correctly, that was one of the first reviews I was asked to do (GalCiv for OS/2). Good memories, I still have that hideous box (although the game was quite addicting).

at Wal-Mart?

That's like a compilation of Hitchcock films outselling whatever Johnny Knoxville has been in lately for the same company. I'm glad to hear its doing well, but doing well at Wal-Mart? That took me completely by surprise.

Sweet. I'm going to pick this up just out of principle. It's cheap and has no DRM crap on it and it's from an independent developer. FTW as they say...

I'm sure DRM is the #1 thing Walmart shoppers consider when deciding what to purchase.

I think you missed his point. Publishers argue that their overall sales will get slashed heavily due to piracy if they don't "protect" their games with DRM. The fact that the #1 selling game at Wal-Mart right now doesn't use DRM at all seems contrary to that notion.

Yeah, that completely went over his head

I'm gonna be buying this game on Thursday out of principle, as well...also, because the concept is something I always wanted to try out and the tutorials and scenario runthroughs on the official site show a lot of strategy involved in more than just the combat aspect of the game (THANKFULLY)

Ok, so I just spent 3 hours driving around this fucking place looking for a copy of the game. Best selling game in Walmart? None of them near me have it in stock. Compusa had a single copy but couldn't find it. Both the nearby EBs had a grand total of 2 shipped to them and both sold already, Target and Best Buy didn't have...neither did the local game stores...fucking hell do I hate living in the anus of this fucking country.

Anyway...gaffizon to the rescue...should get my copy within 3 days
