Game boxsets need to come into play.

Perhaps it's just me, but what with all the sequels and trilogies and whatnot, I'd like to see some game boxsets start popping up.

.Hack, Ratchet and Clank, Onimusha, all that jazz. It'd be nice, as the end of the generation slowly apporaches to be able to look back on overlooked titles...and most importantly, nab a months worth of gaming in a pretty box for a low price, woo!

Yeah, there's always a few double packs and classic collections around. It'd be nice to see larger, more elaborate boxsets and whatnot for perhaps older series and even series that have run long within a single generation.

As I said, I'd love to pick up boxes of games I overlooked. Onimusha and Ratcher & Clank being the most prominent examples that come to mind.

I'm just kinda curious as to why this is such a rarity. Big thing in the DVD arena, is there much of a hassle doing it with console games?

Too little of a payoff, more likely. DVDs are cheaper than games, the movies within are often available individually at bargain bin prices ($10 or less), and the boxed sets usually come with bonus materials while priced to lure in those that have some or all of the originally released work. I highly doubt game boxed sets could offer the same perceived value to a broad range of customers.

Kind of related to the above post, but I think game prices should drop a lot quicker than they are doing now. Konami are starting to do this, but it's pissing retailers off because of 2nd hand trade being crapped on.

I do think there's a lot of scope for box sets in the future, if the industry can expand a bit further.

I definitely know there was a Tomb Raider box set with I, II and III, all with DVD covers. We've got one where I work :)

Why release a game boxset which is expensive to produce (multiple discs, box, shelf space it would require) when they can wait a generation or two and just release a collection disc, ala Mega Man, Zelda, Sonic, etc etc.

The only one I can think of is a Spyro the Dragon boxset with three games around 2001. You don't see more because there just isn't much of a demand for older games with average gamers/consumers, unfortunately.

The Resident Evil set (Pure Evil) did pretty well (9,455 in 3 months according to NPD) and all they did was take the Player's Choice versions of REmake and RE0 and put a sleeve over them. They timed it perfectly so that the people who picked up RE4 could go back and pick up two of the older titles pretty cheaply ($30 US).

i liked the idea of sonys 'collectors edition' series (though i only own gta). id like to see them carry that over for ps2, particularly with the ratchet and jak series, since i dont yet own a ps2 and itd be a nice way to pick up some of the series that id really like to play for the system.
i wouldnt mind seeing nintendo or microsoft do something similar as well...

i know the sony playstation 'collectors edition' series included a spyro collection, a crash collection, a gta collection, an ea sports collection, an ea action collection, an ea racing collection, a disney collection, a disney action collection, a tomb raider collection, an eidos collection, and an army men collection, all with 3 discs, all uniform with white borders (much like the 'greatest hits' line, but much nicer looking).

Well, there are Monkey Ball and Sonic 2-packs out on the GC now :P
i hadnt heard about these, but just looked them up at gamestop.com. have you seen them? do you know if they come in a box like the pure evil 2-pack, or are they just 2 games shrinkwrapped together? (theres no pic at gamestop)

Hmm... Lemme see... The GTA Boxset, Monkey Ball/Sonic 2 packs, "Pure Evil" two-pack (Resident Evil 1 and 0)... It's been done, just not very often.

I've been saying this all along >.<!

They don't even have to make boxsets - how about just boxes with the last game?

It's clear RE4 will be the last GC RE of the gen so it could came with a box to hold it and the other games. The .hack// games really could used one heck even their cover spines connect to form a picture but that don't do much good with them layed down in some rack someplace.

And beyond boxsets how abouts reversable covers?? JP boxart on one side and US on the other would work nicely!

They do come in a box ala Pure Evil.

I wouldn't call them true boxed sets, either. Like you said, they're no-frills two-packs with an added sleeve.

Now a complete Resident Evil boxed set would have been nice (they had one in Japan, IIRC). A GTA boxed set with the old GTAs would have been cool, too.

How about with extras though? Extra levels, features, unlockables etc. Not just bundled together.

There was also a Crash 1-3 boxset around the same time. I expect we'll see SCEA do it again in 2006-2007 with Jak, R&C and Sly.

You do remember correctly. Here's the RE/Biohazard Collector Box

Capcom also has an Onimusha box set.

The Nintendo Famicom Anniversary boxes are also gorgeous.

It's too bad more companies (especially in North America) don't do this sort of thing, but I think it's generally economically unfeasable/pointless for them. The target market for this sort of thing is pretty damn small.
