Game Libraries - Quality or Quantity?

Are you the gamer that wants to try everything, own as much as you can to experience it all?

Are you the gamer that knows what he/she likes and would rather focus on those things, ignoring other offerings?

Im more of the latter, my PS2, XDude, and PC libraries are small, and focus on the games I know I like. I used to be the former, but I thankfully changed. Who can afford that in a normal life?

neither

i've probably owned 35+ games for my ps2, and i have one left (ico)

i sell my games. i have no job (though, hopefully thats going to change soon).

I'm quality over quantity.

In fact, sometimes, I want to buy a game, but there's always only a few games I want that I end up buying a game I already own, but on a different console. I think I bought Puyo Pop (Fever) something like 5 times in my life (GameCube, Gamecube for a friend, DS Jap, Sonic Mega Collection's Dr. Robotnik, etc...).

Plus, I got a tendency to want high cost games (mainly for my Neo), so I can't afford to buy that many.

I buy a shitload of games, but I only actually own about a dozen for each console(though about 30 for PS2). I trade up anything I don't consider essential to my perm collection.

I used to be about quanity - I had every SMS game and nearly the same for my Genny and Saturn. I think about when this generation hit I focused more on what I like - my DC, Xbox, GC and PS2 all have fairly small libraries compared to the earlier consoles I owned.

BF brings up a new question: Why not rent? I have a weird habit of rebuying and trading in tho:

For example, I own these currently but:

Klonoa 2 (Third time owning it)
Shinobi (Third Time owning it)
Nightshade (Second time owning it)
Dark Cloud 2 (fourth time owning it)
Diablo II w/expansion (7th time owning it)
Virtua Fighter 4 Evo (third time owning it)
Halo (third time owning it)
Ninja Gaiden (Second time owning it)
Soul Calibur II (Third time owning it)
Wipeout Fusion (Fourth time owning it)

I don't know if you can rent games everywhere, that's not the case in France and maybe not in the whole Europe.

I used to be more of a quantity guy. I wanted to experience all different types of games. I realized by doing this I spent way too much damn money on games and don't have time to play the games I bought. So now it is all about quality. I try to keep my game title count relatively low so I have time to play the games I buy. I don't want to turn into a game collector. Too expensive of a hobby. This is also the reason why I may only buy Xbox 360 next gen. Yeah I'll miss out on a few games but it isn't a big deal since I won't have time to play them all anyway. I just need Xbox360 to make a big dent in NA so Koei bring over the Dynasty Warriors games to NA the same time as the PS3 version! :lol

I have Gamefly but I'm probably going to cancel. I have enough game time from the games I plan on buying and don't have much extra time to handle two extra rentals. Everything gets diluted.

Both. Yeah, I own several thousand games, but I generally seek out the ones I want and the ones that interest me. The other ones get picked up only when I find them real cheap. If they turn out to be decent, great. If they suck at least I didn't spend much on 'em.

use to be quantity, now when I play a game and don't like it I just dump it right away

don't rent cause I have a huge backlog to go through :(

Cuz renting sucks.

I generally buy games that interest me and I, like anyone reading this forum, am a VERY well informed consumer, anything I purchase I plan to own. For the most part I am rarely unhappy with my game choices, but when the next big shiny release makes a splash, I have no qualms dusting off a few shelfers to help fund the new blood.

Just recently Mercenaries, Doom 3, Kotor 2, and Oddworld:Stranger got the cut, among others. Easilly they are an excellent addition to ANYONE's library(with the exception of Doom 3, I don't dig that game), but I have to come to terms, just what role are they providing just sitting on my shelf?

Though I enjoyed the hell out of them, I see Midnight Club 3 and God of War getting the boot next. I have very stingy requirements on what games make the 'essentials' list. Those two are currently under deliberation. Stella Deus IS almost here afterall!

On the opposite spectrum, I'm pretty much done buying DVD's. Outside of the occasional boxset I can't live without, I haven't had interest to pad out my movie collection in ages.

I tend to be a quality over quantity guy. I hate buying bad games and I'm a pretty big cheap ass. I know what I like and I know what I want. That's not to say I don't try new stuff...I love demos or renting new things to try them out. If I like it I buy it.

I also own some pretty bad games too but I keep them as marks of shame to help me remember my mistake in the hopes that I won't repeat it. :p

MAF: I know you're not the only one who does that but what's the point in buying then selling then rebuying a game? Especially as many times as you'll rebuy a title. Not a flame or anything...Just trying to understand the logic there.

Quality. Every game in my collection is one I really enjoy. If I happen to make a mistake and purchase a game that sucks, it gets traded in.

Quality (except with what I'm trying to collect).

I just get what I like, and ignore the rest, until I find someone who has it to try out.

Thankfully all those games are now worth so little id never trade them in haha

That also plays a role in what I keep..except Suikoden 2. I had no idea that it went for as much as it does when I traded it for $15.

In thinking about it, who's gonna say they go for quantity over quality?! Even someone like me who buys a fuckton of games, I'd always rather buy one great game instead of three crappy ones. I think the question should be, "Do you keep or trade in your games?"

Quality. I only buy games I think I'll play, though I don't always get around to them. I can't say there are any games in my collection that I don't want there.

Yeah I only keep the titles that I would come back to -- that have great stories and top notch gameplay.

As a game reviewer in college, I probably got 200+ ps2 games, but right now I only have Katamari, God of War, and both MGS games. I keep my Zeldas and Marios, my Halos and a few more.

I just know that if I trade in X game for $4, I'll regret it when I feel like going back and playing it again 5 months later.

I go for games I really want and believe is quality about 85 % of the time. The remaining 15 % represents the chances I take, and I always take these chances at very low prices. Psi-Ops is an example of such a chance game that turned out positive.
I also buy these hit-or-miss games when they have '3 for the price of 2' offers at the local gamestore - I sometimes find 2 games I want and just add another one I might like.

I sell 95% of my games upon completion. So, quality. For some reason I find GameCube games more interesting to keep. Not because the games are better, but because of the format, I think. Those cute little discs are fun to collect.

I have always been quality over quantity, except for when I was a kid and would eagerly play any NES game I could get my hands on. The older I have gotten, and with each passing generation, the size of each new console's collection gets a little bit smaller than the one before it. Actually, this gen it got a little larger, as I own all three consoles. Honestly though, my XBox feels kind of like a waste of $ to me. That's not a troll's comment, it's just that comparatively speaking there are so few titles on it that really interest me, compared to my GC and PS2. I sometimes just feel bloated owning all three consoles. Timewise, I really don't have enough to play all the really great titles out now as it is. I love Nintendo, but deep down inside a wicked little part of me wants to get away with only one console next generation (PS3). But I seriously doubt it.

Lots of truth there. I rarely ever trade in anything either.

I have a habit of trying to ge my hands on everything i'm interested in. Unfortunatly, now i'm overwhelmed by a backlog. Shit.

I'm looking for quality. It lead you knowhere to play games that are not good. I mean, why loose our time playing sub-par games really?
I'm trying to strive for diversity in my library of games but i don't go at any game because i want diversity.

I have more of a budget type library. Doesn't really matter the genre, if it's absolutely top notch, I'm buying.

I just play what appeals to me,so theanswer would be quality. I don't care that I've got friends that try to impress me with their 200 game Xbox collections because when I ask them how the game is they can't even answer the question, heh.

I usually keep everything I buy, unless it really sucks and I just sell it like a day or two after I get it.Usually by the time I wouldn't want the game around anymore it wouldn't be worth the effort to trade it in or sell it on EBay...

Like for example,I traded in my DC+35 games I think it was to get the Xbox back at launch,I don't regret the XBox purchase, but I certainly regret getting rid of all of my DC stuff,so I tend to keep things now.

Quality (or personal interest).

I'll lower my standards or take a risk if I can snag a game really cheap, but if I don't enjoy it, I'll sell it or trade it. That being said, I don't sell or trade games I do enjoy. I keep my titles for the long haul.

Both.

The Gamecube and N64 have shown me that quality alone doesn't cut the mustard. I need a large variety of games, all genres, and all publishers.

Quantity. Comes with the "Collector" territory, I suppose.

If anybody's curious (I doubt it): I'm aiming to own every US released RPG, on consoles & handhelds, dating back to the Master System. So far, I only have around 180 in my collection, around 160 of which were acquired within the last 5-6 years. I know I still have a really long way to go yet, though, and the massive amount of upcoming RPGs for PS2 isn't going to help matters. Oy.

Still, this doesn't in any way mean I pass up quality titles. I think I have a lot of really great titles dating back to the NES days, and I own a lot of what most consider the "classics" of the genre, along with a couple rare titles thrown in for good measure. And really, a lot of the "bad" titles I own (Beyond the Beyond, 3DO pap, Shadow Madness, etc) were snagged out of the bargain bin, like 5-10$ at most. So it's not like my priorities are mixed up or something. :)

Like most of us here, i made the transition from quantity to quality. i only buy games i'm almost certain i'll like or are worth taking a chance on. i hardly ever sell my games, after i made the mistake of selling Saumrai Shodown Collection and Silhouette Mirage years ago.

The only game i've sold from my personal collection recently was Auto Modellista (GC). Looks slick, plays like crap. Bought it for $10 new, traded it in for %8.50 in store credit at FYE last week. Ended up buying Ape Escape for PSP. Despite the fact that AE will have cost me about $8 after rebate, i'm debating whether it's worth it.

How do you know they're subpar unless you play them?

Case in point: For months I'd see Grabbed By The Ghoulies on the shelves for under $15 and would pass it by because of the overwhelming messageboard opinion of it being shit incarnate. Bought it one day, liked it quite a bit. Well worth the 12 bucks, and then some. This has happened dozens and dozens of times.

I'm the gamer that knows what he likes and rather focus on those things, ignoring other offerings.

I sell all my games because i know i will never play them again, exactly like the movies, it's rare i watch a movie a second time (twice?), i only collect games with a high replay value like Viewtiful Joe :)

Yea I bought Rygar and Primal for 5 bucks, they suck ass IMO,the only reason I got them was because of the price :lol

The whole quality vs quantity is a red herring argument created by Nintendo fans, IMO.

1) You don't want quality only vs quantity as you like to buy more than two or three games a year (See N64/Gamecube)

2) You don't want quanity at the expense of quality, but when you've got a huge library, you're never stuck with no quality. The percentage of good games might be slightly lower, but usually the sheer number of quality games is much higher (See PSOne/PS2).

Yes, there was A TON of shovelware on the PSOne and PS2 has gotten some as well.

IMO, without quantity you simply can't get the diversity that I'd prefer to have. There is NO SUCH thing as quantitative quality. We all like different games at different levels. I absolutely loved Summoner & Disaster Report, but gamerankings isn't going to put those games high on the "quality" scale.

It's interesting, people call Sony fans the sheep, but when you look at the top 10 lists for Xbox, Gamecube, & the N64 you get a remarkable same set of lists for the top games for the system (Xbox = Halo, Ninja Gaiden, KOTOR, PGR, Splinter Cell ; Gamecube = Zelda, Resident Evil 4, Mario Kart, Pikmin; etc), but with the PS2 you get a much more remarkable diverse listing of top games. Sure you'll end up with some of the same (MGS3, R&C:UYA, GT3/4, GTA, etc), but you'll get a good number of gamers that HATE some of those games.

Basically, I'm on the quantity side, because in my experience, practically speaking, you'll get quality.

You suck. Both of those games are GREAT!! I'm a better gamer for having played them. Neither are in my top 20 games, but hell, there have been so many great game this generation.

It's actually experience + renting. It's been more than 20 years i'm a gamer so i pretty much know what i like. When i have a doubt i always try to play a demo or rent the game first. Your experience observing preview video and screenshots of a game can help to. When i look at a screenshot most of the time i get the feeling of the game. If i look at a movie i can even feel the game somehow. Most of the time i know where i'm going just by knowing what to take and leave reading reviews and watching movies from the games in question. I think it's a "gamer intuition" that is possible for everybody to devellop.
It's never perfect of course, i get screwed each couple of years. Per example, the last game i bought and it wasn't like i thought it would was Lament of Innocence. Since then i bought the likes of 20 to 30 games and i'm all ok with my purchases.

I used to go with quantity. I was out to own every RPG out there as well (I used to have Quest 64 for God's sake), but a couple years ago I realized I had a lot of crap, and have been slowly getting rid of the crap and keeping the good stuff. Some stuff you just HAVE to keep for nostalgia though. Right now my girlfriend and I are at something like 280 games, down from maybe 400 or so, but we've gotten rid of all the subpar titles, and we're now much more selective about what we buy. It has to be a must-buy title, and if we're iffy at all we rent it first. We also only buy RPG's new, action/adventure games we wait for them to go down in price.

OK...Except for the fact that that this particular thread's starter wouldn't exactly be confused for a Nintendo fan...

I totally agree...Quality is subjective. I personally love Super Mario Sunshine yet it would appear that most (on GAF anyway) think it is a sad and pathetic shadow of Super Mario 64. To each his or her own...

I agree but because GameCube and XBox have less titles over all it would mean less good titles by comparison. So if someone were to chose a top 10 list for XBox of course it would include games like Ninja Giaden and Halo simply because they have less good titles to choose from. Has nothing to do with being a blind follower or sheep.

As VALIS said earlier...Most everybody would say they're a quality over quantity...I mean who wants to go out and buy a bad game that they won't enjoy unless it is strictly for the collection value?

No disrespect dude,I even agree with your quanity view, but Rygar played and smelled like total ass on the PS2.:) Its sure looked pretty though so that does count for something.
