GameBoy Tetris High Scores

IntestineBoy

Sasquatch of 1000 (hairy) colons
So I hit a PR tonight playing Tetris (the original game) on my SP. Sure the cartridge sticks out from under the body of the handheld, but Tetris is a stand out game. I've been playing for a while, and I enjoy it.

Usually 200 lines is a barrier, but tonight... through some stroke of luck I hit 240.

Is this a high mark? Or am I just a dumbass?

Better send that into nintendo power ;)

It's pretty fast, almost as fast as if you were holding down (drop) the whole time. You almost don't have time to move a long piece all the way to the side before it hits.

The good news about Level 20 or higher is that it doesn't get faster after that. Maybe the speed is directly connected to what level it displays it as. And it wont display higher than 20. Kind of a bug perhaps. Or I've entered unchartered territory....

hmmm...i was expecting to see something closer to 400....my highest has been aroung 380...but I have a friend who hit above 460....

On the actual gameboy? I saw a bunch of scores online just now look like they were taken from ROMs, in the 600 line range. Figured on the computer it may be easier.

Of course on the gameboy! An SP to be exact.....I don't trust scores from ROM gamers you know they find ways to cheat.

Although I took this screencap from VBA, these games were played on my GBC and SP (I abide by the Thou Shalt Not Cheat commandment :))... I just transferred my savegame, since most of my batteries from that era are six feet under.

Anyway, here's mine:

Better get back into practice with Tetris DS right around the corner. :)

I don't have a screenshot or anything, but back when Tetris DX came out I got 1029 lines. If the score is still saved on the cartridge, I'll edit the post with that.

edit: obviously this was on a real Game Boy Color, no cheating or anything.

Tetris (along with Snake) is my game.

I apologize for my shitty, half-broken camera. The scores are as follows:
1. 1,318,705
2. 1,297,194
3. 998,105

Hey nildem, do you remember about how many lines you got w/ those high scores? My best game was 1074317, but I was doing mostly singles and such, not really going for score.

Wow! That's amazing, man. Same with you, 20XX. I thought I was decent breaking the 300k mark. :lol

Back to life... back to reality...

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 1500 or so.

Haha you and me both. I really suck at Tetris it seems. I just never liked it enough to play that much.

For me, score was somewhere around the 315k. Lines was somewhere around 200. Usually only continued playing after 100 lines if I had made those using only Tetris (4-lines).

God I loved that game, always competing with my father :)

Damn, I thought it was higher than that.

Doesn't DX give more points than original?

Ah, true! forgot about that (even forgot about owning Tetris DX)... my previous post was on the original Tetris for the GB.

By the way, I can remember playing Tetris DX and reaching some point where the speed didn't go up anymore. Think it was level 30 or so (long time ago, can't remember precisely). As I played like that for over an hour, I lost interest and just turned the unit (on which it was playing) off.

Is that really 1.9 million, or did you mean to type a 0? Just curious, because if so, you've just obliterated everyone in this thread... and you thought it was higher. Sheesh. :)

Ughhh.. DX scores in a Tetris thread. What's the point, idiots?

No, Tetris is MY game.

Hmm...As far as I can recall, Tetris DX had the SAME scoring system as Tetris GB, however, it had much smoother and responsive controls, allowing for crazy speeds and techniques (for example, you could hold down left or right to have it fly to the left or right a lot faster than in the original), and consequently, higher scores.

Also, Tetris DX maxed out at level 30 - anything after that was just holding out. Getting actual Tetris' then is awesome fun. Teh speed you start at doesn't really matter, seeing as the points you get early during level 1-9 differs little compared to once you are flying at level 30. The score system was involved certain scores for tetris', multiplied by your level you were on.

As for original Tetris, I know I broke 400,000. 200 lines was a cinch. I even finished the highest speed and level on the other mode. I may have even finished it with 'heart' mode (hold up and select when starting or something - it makes level 9 instantly level 19).

Can't wait for TEtris DS.

Ok that makes me feel better. If you just owned everyone in this thread with your Tetris DX scores, and I've gotten over 300,000 and you've gotten over 400,000.. that's close enough. I have also finished highest speed and level on the other mode. Sweet.

Original GB Tetris I've hit 212 lines. In mode B I've done speed 19 high 4 and speed 18 high 5, but never quite gotten speed 19 high 5.

Tetris DX, ~500 lines. Well past where it stopped increasing. V-Tetris on Virtual Boy was another Tetris with an easy-to-handle max speed, I think I did something like ~700.

correct me if I'm wrong here, but didn't Mode B ask you to remove 25 lines? With the highest starting level being 9, how can you reach speed 18? (unless you mean that select+start trick, doubling the speed)

Uhhhhhhhhyeah, that's right. 1.9 million.

For the record, Tetris DX had not only a battery save for high scores, but an awesome 'sleep' mode, whereby you could pause the game, turn it off, and resume it later.

Yeah, by 19 I mean the 9(heart) you get by holding down at the title screen.

I had too 220k at the normal Tetris. That was the best thing I was able to reach although some people score 1000k at the normal Tetris too

Not really useful if you're going for high scores, though, unless you pause somewhere in the first few levels. Once it starts speeding up, you really can't pause it and get back into it afterwards. And post level 25 or so, at least for me, it total zone territory.

My best on DX is somewhere just shy of 1m. No idea how many lines or exactly what level, though (somewhere over level 30, though).

Which is why I prefer line counts, asshole.

...except my goal was to score as many points as possible wwhile trying not to have as high a line count. Tetris' as often as I can!

They definitely counted points different...
So getting a million points in one and only 300k in the other...that's not as big of a difference as it seems.

Tetris DX is soooooooo much easier than the original black and white. I can get 200 lines in DX, where as I can barely get 150 in the original. My sister-in-law got 242 lines in the original black and white last June.
