GameCube RPGs

Just picked up Baten Kaitos.

Generally I am very impressed with it. Great art-style, cool FMV, great music, and the battle system is pretty cool. The story so far hasn't done anything, then again I am only 40 minutes in the game.

Before then, the only other GameCube RPG I owned was Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II. I loved the original version on the Dreamcast, and the GameCube 4 player split-screen is awesome fun on it.

So what's everyones opinion on GameCube RPGs. Ranking and impressions on the following.

Baten Kaitos
Tales of Symphonia
Pokemon Colosseum
Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II
Phantasy Star Online Episode III
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Summoner II
The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age
Evolution Worlds
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Mega Man X: Command Mission
Lost Kingdoms
Lost Kingdoms II

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Baten Kaitos = not played
Symphonia = worth it
Colosseum = nope don't bother
PSO = yuck what?
Skies of Arcadia = sexilicious, only $20 (USA) so swoop it up
Summoner II = hack and slash, no thanks
LOTR = bland, monotonous, move on
Evolution = saw it on the dreamcast, saw it on the gamecube, yeah ok
Paper Mario = super sexy, very much like the N64 predecessorrrrrrr paper
Mega Man = pretty easy, but the story is kinda cool, bland environments, too much battles (skies syndrome)
Lost Kingdoms = um from what i played i don't really like it, but maybe you will
Lost Kingdoms II = own it, but havent played it, assume its generally like the first, which might be a bad thing

Pokemon Colosseum - fun for Pokemon fans, a bit short, not that great of a story, mediocre graphics engine
Paper Mario RPG - fun for most people, immersive gameplay, nice graphics, very unique

Baten Kaitos (waiting for cheap)
Tales of Symphonia (Bought a copy off ebay - scratched, returned to seller. NO INTEREST)
Pokemon Colosseum (haha)
Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II (played on DC, hated Sega for wasting resources porting this)
Phantasy Star Online Episode III (no interest)
Skies of Arcadia Legends (dunno.. finally bought it but couldn't get into it... combat sure is slow)
Summoner II (haha)
The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age (bad reviews so no)
Evolution Worlds (haha)
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (my copy never arrived from the US.. unplayed)
Mega Man X: Command Mission (bought this... not so great. 5/10. Tedious)
Lost Kingdoms (haha)
Lost Kingdoms II (haha)

I think its suffice to say that RPGs on cube aren't that great. Thank god for my PS2.

And um.. You should sort of include FFCC... Its fun in a nonsensical FF kind of way.

+

haha = you have got to be kidding with these titles

PSO: Episode 3 is a nice change of pace from Episode 1/2. I really liked it, and I was a huge fan of the first two. At first I only played online, but when I discovered the good stuff the offline mode had, I spent many summer nights playing it. One of my favourite RPGs on the Gamecube.

I just cancelled my Hunter's Licence last month. (sniff)

Baten Kaitos - Have not played it, but will purchase soon

Tales of Symphonia - My feelings are totally mixed here. Story kinda sucks, the world didn't appeal to me, the dungeons were weak sauce (for the most part), and the music is awful...but the game was actually pretty fun.

Pokemon Colosseum - I do not like Pokemon and wouldn't play this

Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II - Good game, but haven't played it on GC

Phantasy Star Online Episode III - Have not played it

Skies of Arcadia Legends - AWESOME game. Gameplay actually can't compare to the best RPGs, but the experience was ultra memorable for me. I first played this on Dreamcast. The GC version is a downgrade in my opinion. The textures and music quality took quite a hit and the higher level of detail and quicker loading couldn't make up for it.

Summoner II - Have not played it

The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age - Have not played it

Evolution Worlds - I HATE Evolution on Dreamcast with a passion and would never even DREAM of touching this

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door - Sounds good, but I dunno if I'll play it

Mega Man X: Command Mission - I'm somewhat interested, but I'm not sure

Lost Kingdoms - Have not played it
Lost Kingdoms II - Have not played it

PSO 1&2 is an ok game, but unless you're bleeding money it's not worth paying to play it online (buying a modem/broadband adapter, keyboard and paying $9/month for the hunter's license). It really doesn't add enough to the existing formula to make it a really great purchase, though, and it's far from being pick up and play if you ever want to run through it offline (the fastest it will take you to run through dungeons on the higher difficulty levels is 90 minutes).

:eek easily the best RPG on the cube.

I know, it's just that I really don't like Mario and crew (from a character perspective). I mean, I love Mario games in general (from a gameplay perspective), but RPGs are intended to be somewhat narrative driven and I don't think I would enjoy spending hours and hours with Mario. :\

I may still give it a shot, though, as it sounds like a great title.

Baten Kaitos - Will play after I finish prime 2
Tales of Symphonia - Great. Mainly because of the fantastic battle system.
Pokemon Colosseum - don't know
Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II don't know
Phantasy Star Online Episode III don't know
Skies of Arcadia Legends - Great
Summoner II - don't know
The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age
Evolution Worlds - don't know
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door - Very fun
Mega Man X: Command Mission - don't know
Lost Kingdoms - don't know
Lost Kingdoms II - don't know

.

You know, I only played ToS and PM this year on the GC, but I feel as far as RPGs go, it had a far better year than the PS2 did (Phantom Brave, La Pucelle, and Shadow Hearts 2- all kinda "meh"). Hopefully SMT can bring it up a level.

Hmm, you're really stretching things to come up with a list of GC RPGs. PSO Episode 3? Anyway:

PSO I & II: fun, but not enough of an upgrade over the DC games, and it's expensive to play online properly (the only way this game should be played)
PSO III: also fun, very different from I & II, not what I would consider an RPG
Skies of Arcadia Legends: great RPG, but as has been mentioned a downgrade in some ways. Worth getting if you don't have the DC version
Evolution Worlds: haven't played the GC version, but I have played both Evolution games on the DC, and they're terrible
Paper Mario: the best RPG on GC, wonderful humor and writing, very fun to play

I don't really agree with GC RPGs >>> DC, N64, and Xbox at least at this point. Besides the original Paper Mario (outstanding!) the N64 also had Ogre Battle. Until Fire Emblem GC is out I have to give the nod to N64 for now. Besides a better version of SoA, DC had Grandia II, which had a poor story but one of the best turn-based battle systems ever. I'm guessing you're limiting the games under discussion to Western releases, but DC also a Shiren (Mysterious Dungeon) game that I'm quite fond of. The N64 also had one, but I have not played it. As for Xbox--as much as I like Paper Mario, KOTOR trumps anything on GC RPG-wise :)

RPGs in general have sucked compared to last gen. The cube got the short end of the stick, though. :P

Dude, the Cube is rocking me for RPGs. I have more Cube RPGs than PS2 ones.

Baiten Katos - not played yet
Tales - Great, fun battle system, characters don't pick it up till the second part though.
Pokemon - Haven't played
PSO games - not played
Skies of Arcadia Legends - Best RPG of the 3d era
Summoner II - alright
LOTR Third Age - not played
Evolution Worlds - short, dungeon crawler, It's average, but the story is lame. Really repeatitive
Paper Mario - haven't played yet
Lost Kingdoms - not played
Lost Kingdoms 2 - fun and addictive really, but different. It's real time card battling and summoning.
Final Fantasy CC - Good, boffo multiplayer

I was pleasantly surprised by Baiten Kaitos actually. I've just completed Disc 1 at a time of 21 hours ( according to some boards, disc 2 is even longer!). The card system is extremely addictive with tons of card combos. Music is one of the best i've ever heard on an RPG. Almost all of the tracks are excellent.

Baten Kaitos is really awesome. The game really feels like a spiritual successor to Chrono Cross. That intro FMV is pretty cool too, gets me pumped.

Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II is one of the best action-RPGs ever. It's so fun, and there is so much to do. Love that soundtrack.

Baten Kaitos (thumbs up from me)
Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II (thumbs up from me)

Paper Mario 2: Thousand Year Door (need to play)
Tales of Symphonia (need to play)

fixed.

Paper Mario 2. This kicks the CRAP out of any other rpg on the system. I don't know why more people haven't played it. TOS is ok, and Baiten Kaitos is pretty but very boring besides that. Basically, if you buy Baiten Kaitos before Paper Mario you have bad taste. Flat out.

INSANITY EFFECTS!

ToS got a better battle system, but paper mario got that old school feeling. It's funny how paper mario 2 felt nostalgic while sms didn't. Intelligent system got that game right.

100% agree, though ToS doesn't have a thimblefull of the charm and wackiness of PM2, so it deserves the nod over a fun battle system. And PM2 is by far the best Mario game on GC as well, haha.
