Today, while a release date has still yet-to-be officially announced, Microsoft used its second quarter earnings conference call to confirm what many could consider obvious, that Microsoft will be talking about Xbox 2 during E3 in May. Addressing a question in which an investor asked about release date, John Connors, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer made the following statement.
“In term of the next Xbox, we haven't announced a release. I think they'll talk about that at E3 Los Angeles in May. They're hard at work on it, but it doesn't have a summer announce.”

Why would E3 be too late? Seems about right if they are progressing along in their development cycle. Announce the system in May and you have until November to hype it up and get read. Six months is plenty of time between officially announcing the system and launching for the holidays.

Chibi Link was revealed August 2001. E3 2002 was all about Metroid Prime (at least in Nintendo land). Since I only owned a GameCube at the time, I don't know what MS and Sony showcased that year.
