Doh, I forgot their main review. GTA: SA 4.5 The only redeeming two pages in the whole rag (sort of) are a series of blurbs from designers about the influence of GTA on design. I like Tim Schafer's take, so I will share it with you.

"The really cool things GTA has accomplished-like the feeling of being in a living city with events occurring beyond your immediate area and the freedom to do a lot of different things-have not really been imitated and would be great to see more of in games. There's a lot going on in GTA that people don't seem to pick up on. If it's done right, I think it's great for the industry. I think it's not so much copying game features but changing the way you think about game design. So thinking about a game in terms of a series of scripted events, you think about it as independent entities that have rules and behaviors, and you put them together to see how the interact with each other and the player. You get 'original behavior' - an old catchphrase, but it's true. You get surprises that you didn't design into the game, so it's richer for the player and even the designer."

GamePro sucks blah blah blah.... there we got that out of the way....

I wonder what a game has to do these days to get the 1.0. Do they still have the picture of the dude falling asleep?

can someone translate those numbers to facial expressions? and screw the overall scores; what's the FUN FACTOR on those games?

Oh, no. Not that easily, you didn't.

GAMEPRO IS THE WORST MULTIPLATFORM VIDEOGAME MAGAZINE OUT THERE.

:lol So true!

I almost can't bear getting the magazine on a free subscription.

So Halo 2 = MGS3 = MP2 = NFS:U2

Awesome. :lol :lol

This is why I miss Gamefan so much. The 1-5 and 1-10 scale is obviously nowhere near as accurate as the 1-100 scale that GameFan used. We need Gamefan back, because the 1-5 and 1-10 scale gives some people the impression that all games that are rated 5s and 10s are equal. As for Metal Gear Solid 3 being= Halo 2, I'd probably agree with that. MGS 3 is amazing.

Much to the chagrin of magazine lovers everywhere, GamePro dropped happy-faces and persona portraits earlier this year. As a result, Fennec fox now exists only in my mind... which is probably a healthier place for him to be.

More like the Gamefan 90-100 scale!

There are many arguments against the 100 scale, the chief of which is that your average person equivocates them (and rightly so) to school grades, where 70 and below is essentially a failure.

No we don't.

"FF XII isn't like FFVII, the best RPG ever! 60/100

Rape Rape High School: The Taste of Strawberries is sooo kawaii and ii desu! Only flaw is that the box isn't foil embossed. 99/100"

Anybody who favors a 100-point scale has never had to score games on a regular basis. It's a pain in the ass in about six different ways, and the added "precision" is really of no value to the consumer. Console-warrior message board jackoffs may need scores that exact, but ordinary sane humans don't.

Exactly. Their 100 were worthless when they gave out for 95% of all their games. They even gave out 101s or even 110s.

because the different between 97% and 100% is so much! i know when i'm playing a game i can tell if it's 3% better than the last game i played :S
reviews are ment to tell if a games are good or not. 5 point system works well.
4-5- pretty much a good game, not much worries.
3-4- decent game, small issues. etc.

:lol so true.

Regardless of the scale used, the review scores don't really mean that much if you take the time to actually read the review that accompanies them.

I envy Roger Ebert's eight-point scale. Or the little man in the San Francisco Chronicle -- that's, what, a four-point scale?

To get an idea of the silliness of the more detailed game scoring systems, imagine applying the same conventions to movie reviews. Why don't the Friday flick reviews in the paper come with little bar graphs doping out "DIRECTION," "ACTING," "SCREENWRITING," and "SOUNDTRACK" ratings? Why doesn't Leonard Maltin have to throw in a Reviewer's Tilt?

Actually 5 = no man (empty seat), sleeping man, man sitting at attention, man clapping, and man jumping up and down on his chair. Best rating system I know, definitely, other than the GIA's 1-2-3-4-5 scale.

more to do with price, you hire or go to the cinema's 10$ or so, if it's crap you still got a couple of hours entertainment. But spending $100 on a game and getting complete shit is kinda sucky. That and all the complaining net gamers who will create petitions and mass emails if they don't get what they want from mags/reviews.

joshscw: PS2 and Xbox are two entirely different games. PS2 games is mediocre at best, Xbox is superb. I wonder what version Gamepro scored, maybe it's a mix?

I like how Gamepro adds (or used to add? haven't read it in a long time) a thumbs-up next to the guy's face to represent one-half. The sleeping guy or bored guy giving the thumbs up was especially funny.

They added that somewhere along the way... Old-school gamepro didn't have that.

Francis Mayo was the artist... maybe he has a site or something...

Actually Francis Mao, whose main claim to fame before getting a job at GamePro was doing some drawing for the TMNT comics.
