Europa 1400: The Guild was a great one.

Mercantilism as a trade theory is different from what we know of today as Capitalism (or the Free Market) in that rather than specialization of trade, it promoted the idea that the Empire should be self sufficient and own all of the resources it consumes. This economic concept is what drove Colonialism as a geopolitical foce during the age of colonialism and it is mercantile ideals that created and settled the new world.

The Civilization games, especially III and IV (featuring resources), tend to promote Mercantilist ideals more than free trade. It simply pays more to own the resources as they will never be under threat of being cut off.

How about the Uncharted Waters games?

The 2nd Super Nintendo one remains one of my favorites. It's especially mechant based if you pick the Turkish guy's quest.

Fuck yea. Privateer and Freelancer. Awesome examples of mercantilism at its best.

I used to play Taipan on the TRS-80 all the time.
What's crazy is I wrote a game on my C-128 that was just like that, and I never even knew about Taipan. Well, mine was certainly not nearly as polished, but still. So if you want a shitty sci-fi version of Taipan and have a C-128 emu, go to my site.

Anyway, that Sea Trader GBA game is pretty much a modern port of Taipan right? That game didn't leave my GBA for a month. $10 well spent.

I don't know if it counts. But Aerobiz Supersonic is one of the best business type games I've ever played.

Capitalism for PC is pretty good too.

Patrician's descendants Port Royale and Port Royale II, both set in the Caribbean, are worth a try. I remember Machiavelli: The Prince/Merchant Prince being a lot of fun, but I'm not sure if the interface has held up. "Merchant Prince 2" is the same game adapted to run on modern OSes.
