games with great level design?

Here's a curveball... all of Climax's racing games have always had excellent track designs for their original tracks.

The art direction was awful, but Gauntlet Dark Legacy has some really well-done maze levels and puzzles -- something hard to get right.

Obviously, though, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and the three real dungeons in Wind Waker stand out to me in the action-RPG category. WoW's Shadowfang Keep is the most entertaining MMORPG dungeon out there.

For multiplayer FPS games, Wake Island in BF1942 and Karkand in BF2. Both of 'em are near perfection. I liked the level design in No One Lives Forever 2 for single-player. Also, whatever the POLAR OPPOSITE of Perfect Dark Zero's single-player level design is. Take the decisions they made and reverse them 100%.

As far as 3D platformers go, I liked Rayman 2 and Maximo Army of Zin. Well-paced and exciting, without the camera and jungle gym antics of Mario 64.

Onimusha 3 final boss outside burning temple grounds.

GT4 rally stages, the depth of elevation as you ascent/decent the mountain & it's backdrop
was nicely done. Also one of the fictional-tracks (forget name) where you race in the countryside was also beautiful.

Capcom vs. SNK 2 Millienium for DC. London streets stage, w/ the good BGM was impressive for a 2D fighter.

these are few I can recall at moment.

Level design that got me:

Yoshi's Island
Donkey Kond Country 2
Super Mario Bros 3
Jak and Daxter
ICO (omgwtfawesome)
Super Metroid
Metroid Prime
Beyond Good And Evil (second dungeon)
Zelda ALTTP and Ocarina of Time

Super Mario64
Buffy the vampire slayer
Sonic2
Panzer Dragoon
Contra3
PowerSlave
TombRaider1-2
NIGHTS
Metroid Prime
Super Metroid
StarFox64
Half Life2
Blood Omen Legacy Of Kaine

Hell yes. Great flow, and a ton of variety to the environments. Easily some of the most well-designed FPS levels ever.

Oni for PS2

What an underrated game.
Sure, the control had some problem, but it was a first year title, ya know?

An actual architecutre designed the buildings and structres in the game.

Super Mario Bros 3, the "secret" stages in Mario Sunshine, nearly every Zelda game, Phantasy Star 2

Ridge Racer Type 4.

I know GAF is predominantly Rage Racer fanatics, but RRT4 has some of the best tracks in racing design ever.

I don't remember how I got my hands on Oni for PC, but I couldn't play it for too long. They game seemed interesting, but the controls were HORRIBLE. I couldn't deal with it.

bad controls + 3D games = motion sickness :(
